Paula Lennon Posted June 11 Report Posted June 11 Writing competition success sees Canelo acquire two novels by P.D. Lennon April 23, 2025 Commissioning Editor Craig Lye has acquired World All Language rights to a new historical thriller series by P.D. Lennon directly from the author in a two-book deal. P.D. Lennon’s novel, entitled The Case of the Mad Doctor, is inspired by the true story of Jamaica’s first serial killer, Dr Lewis Hutchinson, in the 1770s. After word of mysterious disappearances in the British colony reaches Bristol, an unlikely pairing of ambitious Black law clerk Isaiah Ollenu and pious insurance agent Ruben Ashby is thrown together, and ordered across the Atlantic to investigate. But, confronted by prejudice, untoward characters and vengeful spirits, the task may cost this unlikely duo more than either man is willing to pay… It is a searing snapshot of the British Empire at the threshold of emancipation, and a chilling historical thriller. The story placed second in a writing competition run in collaboration between Canelo and the I Am In Print writing community. The contest was open to novelists who were not under contract at the time, and entrants were required to submit a full-length, previously unpublished work. The winner received a cash prize, and the top three all received editorial one-to-ones. P.D. Lennon was born to Jamaican parents in England. She lived in Jamaica during her teens and developed a great affinity for the island. Although Paula came back to England to study law and was once a London commercial lawyer, she eventually saw sense and returned to live where the weather is more conducive to smiling. Craig Lye says: ‘I was absolutely enthralled by Paula’s witty yet incredibly sharp historical novel, which both perfectly captures the experience of a Black Briton at this threshold moment in history, and brings the spirit of Jamaica to vivid life. It is a brilliant novel.’ P.D. Lennon says: ‘Placing second in the I Am In Print Novel Award competition was an exciting surprise, and gave me a huge boost of confidence in my story. Heartfelt thanks to my editor and publisher, whose keen insight and steadfast support have been instrumental in shaping the novel. A dark historical tale, it is laced with humour and a touch of magical realism. I really hope that readers will find it an absorbing read.’ The Case of the Mad Doctor will be published 10 July 2025, in B-format MMP, ebook and audiobook, with a second novel to follow.
