Biography of Nell Irvin Painter
Nell Irvin Painter is a historian notable for her works on the history of the southern United States of the nineteenth century.
As a scholar, Painter has published numerous books, articles, reviews, and other essays. Painter’s prominence has been recognized by her selection to be the President of the Southern Historical Association for 2007 and the President of the Organization of American Historians for 2007-2008.
Painter earned her B.A. - Anthropology at the University of California at Berkeley. During her undergraduate years, she studied French medieval history at the University of Bordeaux. She also studied at the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana, she completed an M.A. at the University of California at Los Angeles. She later earned an M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University and a B.F.A. from Rutgers University.
Painter received a Candace Award from the National Coalition of 100 Black Women in 1986.
Painter retired from Princeton University and served as president of the Organization of American Historians.
