Photographing Gregory Pardlo, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, at his home was an exercise in seeing love in the tactile. As we learned from his memoir Air Traffic, the family of his upbringing presented significant challenges, and his life’s journey led to the salvation of a new family. The Pardlo home was warm, active, cluttered—with mother, father, two daughters, and one rabbit its beating hearts. The landscape reflected dedication to the children. And before one window was this imposing, beautiful harp. I asked Greg about it. One of his daughters was learning to play it and loved playing it. I asked Greg if he’d be open to being photographed with the harp, the instrument a metaphor for his love for his daughter and for his family. And in the image Greg is a reflection of his home, strong, content, a proud smile above his hands, comfortable in the turn of the harp.
