Praise for Running to Fall
Running to Fall is the compelling tale of a complicated woman haunted by her past, in a world haunted by a pandemic. It is the story of a woman named Tragedy, and the story behind her name. Her yearning for connection, refuge, and a stable home is masterfully juxtaposed against the isolation imposed on her by the alienating setting, as one of few Black residents of an Illinois exurb. She encounters a cast of equally complex women with their own secrets and regrets as she faces difficult truths and choices.” —Tiffany Gholar, author of A Bitter Pill to Swallow and The Unforeseeable Future Get This Deal Now ?

I’ve stayed out of the banned books controversy for the same reason I don’t do anything special for Black History Month. The banned books others wring their hands over are AALBC bestselling books, and every month is Black History as far as I’m concerned.

The banning of books is an inherently flawed tactic as it brings more attention the books the book banners want destroy. Curious readers don’t just seek out the popular books; they look for the books that others want to marginalize and discredit. This is part of the reason AALBC and other indie booksellers are necessary — perhaps more than ever.

Due to the rancor over Kyrie Irving sharing a link to the film Hebrews to Negrows, the filmmaker, Ronald Dalton Jr.’s book Hebrews to Negros: Wake Up Black America! will be an AALBC bestseller when I publish my list next month

When think about the books I choose to read, I think about a Ben Okri’s poem, which includes the line: Read what you’re not supposed to read.”
