DVD Review by Kam Williams
Excellent (4 stars)

Bishop T.D. Jakes is one of America’s most-beloved televangelists, ministering to millions out of The Potter’s House, a Dallas mega-church with a full-time staff of 300 and a congregation in excess of 30,000. The popular reverend is a multi-talented Renaissance Man who not only preaches from the pulpit, but who has also done some counseling, acting, and written over 30 books.

Last year, the prolific cleric published, ’Reposition Yourself: Live Life without Limits,’ a practical how-to tome offering a faith-based path to spiritual and material fulfillment. Clocking in at less than an hour, this relatively-lightweight DVD version of the text probably pales in depth to the source material which inspired it.

For, while I didn't read this text, I have reviewed another one of Bishop Jakes’ best-sellers, ’Mama Made the Difference,’ and that touching tribute to motherhood was well-enough crafted to earn a spot on my annual 10 Best Books list. Consequently, this DVD is recommended primarily for folks too busy the book’s 288 pages.

In the video, Jakes challenges each viewer to summon up the courage to achieve his or her dream. He is assisted in this endeavor by the testimonials of several celebrities, most notably Reverend Jesse Jackson, Sr. and Radio One founder Cathy Hughes. And besides these recognizable luminaries, the DVD also includes extended interviews with a number of success stories, individuals who overcame unfortunate circumstances and are currently flourishing.

Otherwise, Jakes does most of the talking, first delivering the urgent message that time is your greatest resource and that one must, therefore, be wise in deciding exactly how you will spend it. Next, he delineates the five steps involved in any process: revelation, inspiration, formalization, institutionalization and crystallization. Ultimately, he concludes with a rousing sermon passionate enough even to get the lame up out of their seats during which he exhorts you to ’Live your life!’ because ’This is your moment!’

Can I get an ’Amen!’
