Machine Stories is about my view towards machines/robots/programs/true artificial intelligence/androids.  How they exist from their own truth and align to humans in various settings. I think of lot of fiction assumes the machine is merely a metal mirror to humanity and I oppose that position. 
A prequel was this stageplay. It isn't a machine story but the machine character was one of the initiators of this path.

TITLE: THE PROMOTION

An officer sit in his office behind a desk.

"Captain's log supplemental , Lieutenant Miller is about to have the final test to become a senior officer. I wonder what will I do to Sove's three times great grand nephew if he fails?"

A knock on the door.

"Enter"

Lieutenant Miller sits down, and silence distills in the room. The Captain break the silence with a smile:" Congratulations on passing the tests up to this point, record setting times or acuity... but now is the final test"

The Lieutenant is in a puzzlement and the Captain continue: "Do you recall clause 666 in your contract"

The Lieutenant shake his head and the Captain continue: "I am required to tell you at this time that all applicants to senior officer have to pass the final test if they choose to take it, failure to pass the test results in an unquestionable sentence of death. If one , after knowing or being reminded of the penalty of failure does not take the final test of seniority, they will remain commissioned at the rank when they rejected the test.. do you comprehend what I said"

"Yes Sir"

"I ask, do you wish to take the final test of seniority, knowing failure will lead to unquestioned death, Lieutenant Miller?"

"I do sir"

The Captain lean back, patient, silent, and after a minute watching the Lieutenant, he breath deep and speak: " The Final Test, begins, now... do you know how faster than light travel works?"

"Yes, a Weir engine, a nuclear engine initiates an artificial black hole using high frequency neutron emissions in a spherical space the diameter of an Angstrom in a fraction of the frequency of strontium in an optical lattice. Maintaining and manipulating the black hole in a gyroscopic cage with a neutron pump....The controlled artificial black hole (C.A.B.H.)[pronounced cab] selects and manipulates a stream of gravitons in a nearby space, aided by a focused high powered electro magnetic field to fold space, generating an artificial and sustained singularity (A.S.S.) that can be used to move a vessel through bent space, allowing movements faster than light. The next location is Zeta Leporis where miners hope to have a prospecting rush like never before seen, while we are a pleasure cruise on our way to Tau Ceti"

The smiling Lieutenant finish attentively in the chair and the Captain is unemotional and speak: "Well done, but that isn't completely how... do you know anything about Weir outside his technology?"

"No sir"

"Well, good to know... the first Weir drive was on a ship called the Event Horizon. Classified, labeled unmentionable to non senior officers after a report by Lieutenant Cooper from an expedition on the destroyed Lewis and Clark suggested something we now call the Living Space, made the Event Horizon alive and it, the ship, murdered or turned mad all others from his crew including his captain and Doctor Weir, outside two survivors. Himself and permanent psychiatric patient Executive Officer Starck... the government had concerns but couldn't stop trying to make this work, and so for two decades they tried again and again, proving Lieutenant Cooper's report an absolute truth on their first go but needing two decades to figure out how to communicate to the Living Space, and the Living Space only communicated the word , cavus...hole. At first no one comprehended, and then someone realized the Living Space meant, a soul. And then someone figured out it said cavus once, and so it wanted a sacrifice to allow us to pass through it. One way and one back, but finally, a human expedition went and came back from Proxima Centauri"

The Captain pause and take a drink out of a drawer and let the Lieutenant absorb. After a half minute the Lieutenant ask: "Those huge containers of Nuclear fuel, they aren't nuclear fuel are they?"

The Captain drink slow and reply: "No.. they are not"

Abruptly, the Lieutenant affirm: "Wait , no no n"

Sharply, the Captain interject with a deadly low tone: "You know the penalty for failing this test"

The Lieutenant look about sweating, alarmed but fixed to the chair, unsure of what the Captain wields in an unseen arm while the Captain continue in an even tone: "If you kill me, your dead, try to run, dead, as of the moment I started the test, all your communications and locations or movements will be monitored as all senior officers"

The Captain pass the Lieutenant a drink and continue:" First they tried death row inmates but the Living Space increased its desire and the calculations showed an alternative will be needed. We lost crews attempting non humans. But someone considered an Engineered Species (E.S.) and after various attempts a set of E.S. 's were finally accepted, the top brass, government, currency holders, found a rock or rocks in space and grow the overemotional things to pay our ferryman."

The Captain take a drink, and the Lieutenant ask into the space on top of the desk with bewildered eyes: "When will this end?"

The Captain laugh: "It has been over one hundred and fifty years since the first successful jump, in that time I have personally witnessed the payoff go from a fifth of what we use now to the ten percent increase projected by calculations in a months time, but I have also witnessed fortunes been made by countless poor folk, no wars, near all humans in a leisure, a comfortable living, with our population growth, this is universal manifest destiny for humanity... no Lieutenant , humanity does not want it to end, and no! we tried to find other living spaces, we tried not to pay, both times we lost whole crews and the price increased at a sudden higher rate, the Living Space wants the lives we give it, and we will give it for our own betterment"

The disillusioned Lieutenant sit hunching over and the Captain ask: "Well Lieutenant , do you want to become a commander?"

I was inspired by the basis story of the film Event Horizon. But I have gone to a whole other place. Do you like it?
