On March 26, 2016, the AfroSurreal Writers Workshop in collaboration with the African American Museum and Library of Oakland will host Spirit-Talk, a conference on AfroSurrealism, comics, and social justice. Taking its name from a line in AfroSurrealist Henry Dumas’s short story “Echo Tree,” Spirit-Talk aims to inspire conversations, community, healing, and love through the arts. The one-day symposium will feature the creative work of writers, filmmakers, visual artists, and musicians.
Schedule
The conference begins with a workshop, followed by a reading and Q&A discussion with featured presenters, and ends with a wine and cheese reception for Juliana "Jewels" Smith, a writer, cultural worker, organizer, and educator who will receive an award for She is creator of (H)afrocentric: the Comic, which encourages dialogue on pressing social issues.
Throughout the conference, the works of local artists will be projected onto a screen, and guests will have the opportunity to hear the work of local musicians.
