  1. I love that the Schomburg Center held this event! This is an exciting time for writers of black speculative fiction and comic books!
  2. On March 26, 2016, the AfroSurreal Writers Workshop in collaboration with the African American Museum and Library of Oakland will host Spirit-Talk, a conference on AfroSurrealism, comics, and social justice. Taking its name from a line in AfroSurrealist Henry Dumas’s short story “Echo Tree,” Spirit-Talk aims to inspire conversations, community, healing, and love through the arts. The one-day symposium will feature the creative work of writers, filmmakers, visual artists, and musicians. Schedule The conference begins with a workshop, followed by a reading and Q&A discussion with featured presenters, and ends with a wine and cheese reception for Juliana "Jewels" Smith, a writer, cultural worker, organizer, and educator who will receive an award for She is creator of (H)afrocentric: the Comic, which encourages dialogue on pressing social issues. Throughout the conference, the works of local artists will be projected onto a screen, and guests will have the opportunity to hear the work of local musicians. For more information, visit the AfroSurreal Writers Workshop website afrosurrealwriters.org, visit us on Facebook, or call (510) 637-0200
