The American Library Association and has several awards that celebrate Black writers, including the Coretta Scott King Book Award which has been given to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults since 1970.

Pulitzer Prize has been awarded since 1918, but it would be almost half a century before a Black writer would be recognized. The National Book Awards have been bestowed since 1950, but in the next 3 decades only 2 Black authors would win the award. In recent years these awards have made great strides in recognizing Black talent.
