Panelist: Black Money-Why the Urban Genre is Remaking the Book Business

Literary Salon (main stage) After facing rejection from agents and publisher many writers in the urban general went on to self-publish their books. Their experiences changed many of the ways urban fiction are promoted, sold and distributed. Many have gone to establish successful publishing entities. What other authors can learn from the business model of selling books in chicken shacks, barbershops and out of the trunk of your car. Will it stay this way? What’s missing in their sales technique? Interesting: many of these authors go on to start their own bookstores, publishing companies. Only for urban fiction because of repeat customers? Marketing & distribution techniques.  Panelists include, Troy Johnson, AALBC.com, Ellis L. Marsalis, founder, Obie Joe Media and Tracie Howard, Random House author, 7 novels, urban marketing expert.

Harlem Book Fair: Panel Discussion Book Reviews -  Panelist
Saturday, July 21, 2007 Harlem, NY
https://www.qbr.com/page8946.asp

Over the past five years, book coverage at dozens of newspapers has been cut back or slashed altogether, puffed up with wire copy, or generally treated as expendable. How does this impact the marketing of books targeted to the African American reader, which already suffers from paltry recognition in the mass media? Authors can purchase a review in some black book review publications. Is this an unethical abuse of reader trust or simply a necessary business tool for ad-starved publications?
