Will Nintendo release an upgraded Switch model?

Nintendo's more popular handhelds have had very long lifespans, in the neighborhood of 10 years. I think the Nintendo Switch will wind up in that territory.

The thing is Nintendo has been hinting at this publicly too. For the last year or so, they keep talking about how the Switch is just entering the middle of its lifespan. So it’s got a ways to go.

I do think it’s worth mentioning something that will probably come up. There’s a theory that Nintendo is done with generations as we know them, and instead will iterate on the Switch idea into infinity, like Apple does with iOS. It doesn’t sound impossible - imagine games like Zelda and Mario getting minor updates for years to come to keep them running in later iterations of the hardware. We do see this on iOS - a lot of the best games from 10 years ago are still available, updated infrequently with stuff like support for larger screen sizes as they come out, 64 bit, etc.

I think if Nintendo was planning to go down that road they probably wouldn’t talk about this “middle” stuff. I’m not saying that they would have said otherwise at this point - they keep it close to the vest and there’s no reason to tip their hand. I feel like they would never deliberately spread misinformation.
