  2. I think it’s overlooked that the big Japanese publishers—including Nintendo—were looking to the West long before Sony’s decline in Japan.Like they were looking to the west on NES, SNES, PSX too!I think the other thing overlooked is that Nintendo was disproportionately wrt home consoles losing ground in Japan starting with N64. Nintendo was forced to confront shortfall in the Japanese market long ago and this eventually led to it, with DS/3DS/Wii U doing disproportionately well in Japan.Iwata Nintendo was intensely focused on doing well in Japan again and this caused Nintendo to anticipate what happened in the first HD generation to their benefit in Japan. It also is why, despite mobile taking so much of their lunch in the next generation, Nintendo continued to build Switch giving Japan a lot of focus—they’ve been a company for the last 20 years trying to make themselves and increasingly console gaming itself relevant in Japan. With Switch, they’ve built a brand/device that isn’t disproportionately successful in Japan but doing very well everywhere. Nevertheless, Japan and Asia are very strong markets for them and will continue to get a lot of focus in design decisions, I think, rather than a focus exclusively on the revived export business to the west.Meanwhile, the fate of the big Japanese games, which have to repeat by and large always sought western success, decoupled from the smaller games of the industry that were domestically oriented i.e. the plethora of JRPG, largely a domestically targeted genre. Hence, the fate of Sony decoupled from the fate of the domestic market. Moreover, Sony has not been in a position where it has felt it needs to do better in Japan. It has never been in a point of weakness where it needs to address and refocus efforts on its (formerly) domestic market. So it has ridden out this trend.Basically, it used to be that putting things out on a leading console in Japan was the same thing as targeting the west, by and large. But it came not to mean that. Switch is no longer disproportionately successful in Japan but it still doesn’t entirely line up with preconceived notions of targeting the west/legacy support loyalty but it is providing a new platform where you can target the west AND Japan. Final Fantasy was the JRPG that "broke out." Nintendo tried to get DQ to "break out" in the west back in the NES days and SE has on/off tried again after the merger. DQ is still more successful in the west than a lot of JRPG, e.g. it has sold ~1 million in the west a couple times now.The problem for FF is that while it "broke out" on PSX there are a lot bigger fish in the western console market now than there were back then operating on bigger and bigger budgets and it is chasing them because of its status "elevation" on PSX. Doing so has compromised it in Japan and also led to huge development problems. I just want to say that it MAKES SENSE to want to play JRPGs... or any RPG on Switch, those tend to be long games and not being tethered to the TV helps a lot in completing them, though anyone who owned a DS/3DS/PSP/Vita must know that already. Now then, being able to switch (heh) between TV and handheld obviously has it's perks too, as we all know, so I think that's why people ended up gravitating towards playing more of those games on Switch. We can add visual novels to this too, reading them on your bed beats having to be playing them on TV. That doesn't mean Sony can't make a comeback without a handheld/hybrid, but they really seem to think Japan is barely relevant to sales nowadays, if 2020's PS5 didn't put them in emergency mode in Japan, I don't think anything will, this year sales may have been better in absolute terms thanks to REVIII, but the attach rate is similarly atrocious and even the PS4 sales are starting to wane, which is obvious considering that many devs already jumped ship to Switch and the rest of the games that come to PS4 don't appeal the Japanese audience enough to offset the decline. Just like the Vita, I don't think Sony will put much effort in reversing this and will let fate decide how things will turn out, which is fine by me because Nintendo is basically winning without doing anything (don't get angry, this is a luigi meme). You could argue that Sony's current strategy with square and maybe with buying Crunchyroll as well (which could be unrelated overall but there's talk of "synergy") is somewhat of a last ditch effort to retain the jrpg audience, something they always left up to 3rd parties and didn't do much with over the years whilst Nintendo has been silently taking a larger and larger piece of that pie, it could also be argued that since the bulk of the audience switched to handhelds Sony stopped paying attention to it, again relying on 3rd parties while square made sure they always get FF on PS3/4. But FF was also slowly losing its audience. Nintendo lost so much market share with N64 it kinda spurred them on to react immediately. It could be argued that the worse thing to happen with Sony was them getting so many 3rd parties so early, they didn't have to bother working on weak areas that might hurt them in the future. When it finally hit them with PS3 all the 3rd parties were already locked inEven if they wanted to pivot huge cracks were forming on the handheld side. And when it hit again with the vita instead of trying to fix those weaknesses they just dropped handheld completely. Which was a big problem long term. 3. So, MHRise is the best selling third party game on Switch with 7M of units Gamasutra - Monster Hunter Rise has shipped 7 million copies in two months Considering that it was released on one console (PC version is still not available)I was thinking how important this is. While MH has been with Nintendo consoles since many years ago (mostly because the portable consoles) this is the first Non-Nintendo Third Party Exclusive that is not a port from current or last gen. Also it doesnt features any of the Nintendo popular mascots. The game is great and fun, I think that even the great RE4 didnt get that amount of sales on the Gamecube. Will MHRise success encourage other third party companies to make efforts on the Switch even with the PS5/XboxX in the market?I am pretty sure we are going to see more MH games on nintendo consoles, maybe the spiritual successor of WORLD will be also on Switch. And I believe that a RE game is inevitable too. Certain genres or series have always performed better on Nintendo consoles. Even the Wii U had games like Rayman and that Sonic racing game outselling the other versions, that's not even mentioning the indie games that always perform better on Nintendo. MH was big on Nintendo not only due to the time it was exclusive but also because the series was at its peak on handhelds in Japan, and Switch is the only handheld console on the market so it was bound to happen some time.Sadly in my personal opinion a lot of third parties are stuck in the biased PS1/PS2 days, which means that they would opt to ignore the Nintendo and the Switch instead. There are still a handful of developers that barely lived through the start of HD era and yet still release PS4 exclusives even though they aren't the market leader in Asia.Sometimes executives can be fanboys, and that's what leads to certain games not coming to Switch even though it makes sense financially (ex. Sega). Another example was the NRS guys that initially said MK11 shouldn't come to Switch because it's a kiddy casual audience or whatever. The creator of MK literally proved them wrong and the guys didn't even know about the early MK games being on the SNES. 4. Did you know? Memorial Day was originally a Black holiday called “Decoration Day”. It was a celebration to thank the Black Union soldiers who’d fought and given their lives in the Civil War. The first Decoration Day was held in 1865 in Charleston, South Carolina. The Union army had just successfully defeated the Confederate army. Black Union soldiers played a very large part in this victory. On May 1, around 10,000 free Black people gathered in the historic Hampton Park to pay their respects to the fallen Black Union soldiers. Hampton Park was formerly the site of a prison (built by Confederates) which had confined many Black Union soldiers overtime. To honor their fallen lives, free Black workmen had decided to convert the prison into a memorial site. This is where the first Decoration Day was held. The celebration itself consisted of a large parade, fiery speeches, picnics, and even demonstrations by some of the surviving Black Union soldiers. The whole event was a happy and fun gathering of Black people who were celebrating their victory over enslavement. Celebrations like this one continued to be held by Black people all over the United States. Over the years, Decoration Day was copied by the dominant society. They changed the date to the end of May, and renamed it “Memorial day”. The meaning was changed to be a celebration for “all soldiers” who fought in the war. But this was NOT the original meaning. Now you know! We have one Pokemon Remake, one Dragon Quest Remake, Yu-Gi-Oh, on top of the evergreens which are now joined by Rise, Momotaro & Bowser's Fury. With the slow arrival of third parties we are finally at a stage where software sales on the Switch can start to rapidly catch up to the 3DS which enjoyed multiple third party million sellers, six Yo-Kai games, five Monster Hunter, two Dragon Quest games, managed to break 1 million. We also had GungHo with Puzzle & Dragons Z & Mixi get very close with Monster Strike Top 5 Publishers 3DS & Switch: [NSW] Nintendo - 32.551.689[3DS] Nintendo - 17.162.281[3DS] Pokemon Co. - 13.933.720[3DS] Capcom - 12.701.128[3DS] Level 5 - 9.466.214[NSW] Pokemon Co. - 6.016.291[NSW] Capcom - 2.201.869[NSW] Konami - 2.191.728[NSW] Microsoft - 1.960.244[3DS] Square Enix - 1.772.911 Overall it's been Nintendo mainly making headway with their games on the Switch the sales of 1st Party games with the Switch Top 20 currently is higher than the combined output of Nintendo & Pokemon Co. on the 3DS. Level 5 and Yo-kai are the biggest casualties of the transition, going from a Top tier third party publisher on the 3DS to bottom tier on the Switch. Their top selling games are currently still well below 1 million units on the Switch in Japan and so far there has been no major announcements for new games. Their strategy to pivot to mobile while driving Yo-kai into the ground has turned their potential to lower than Marvelous on the Switch. Konami are definitely the biggest winners of their strategy aligned with the Switch, Momotaro is already their best selling game in Japan and it should cross 3 million units sold physically by the end of the year and over 4 million overall, the first new franchise to do this since Yo-Kai. There is also very strong demand for the upcoming Yu-gi-oh game so they might have at least one more million seller on the Switch by 2022. Capcom still need to sell 10 million more units Please Follow me throughout the Internet ! https://anchor.fm/amin-parker http://open.spotify.com/user/22i6cf7qvnhxurt7jquwydjmi https://open.spotify.com/show/2Ui9Pkfd8RrLhkplDJeIC0 https://aalbc.com/tc/profile/10955-amin_parker/ https://www.nintendolife.com/users/Amin_Parker https://www.gamespot.com/profile/Amin_and_Azizah/blog/ https://www.ignboards.com/members/amin_292392.96573347 https://www.resetera.com/members/amin_parker.62397/ https://www.neogaf.com/members/amin_parker.820043/ https://www.eurogamer.net/profiles/Amin-and-Azizah https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/community/Amin_Parker https://www.polygon.com/users/パーカー アミン/comments#activity https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/community/Amin_Parker https://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/profile/85845/aminandazizah/ https://www.giantbomb.com/profile/aminparker/ #パーカーアミン #AminParker
  6. Konami will soon surpass 3 million sales on the Switch and Baseball Spirits & Yu-gi-oh launching this year they should have no problems reaching something like 4.5 million. If they end up launching Winning Eleven on the Switch it could very well be an even higher total. On their heals will be Capcom with Rise, Stories 2, Generations Ultimate & Ace Attorney both companies will soon be uncontested at the top.Square does have Dragon Quest III Remake launching this year, so overall they should equal their result for the previous years as this Remake will probably do very well on the Switch as there hasn't been one since the Gameboy Color in 2000. Outside of that Bravely Default 2 (which was one of my favorite games released so far this year) definitely under-performed and failed to see franchise growth. While Neo: The World Ends with You is another title with uncertain potential at this point but should have no problems surpassing 100K sales, with continued sales of DQXIS, we are looking at potential of north of 1 million units for Square.Marvelous is the shaping up for the third or forth spot this year in competition with Square, a lot depends on whether they can find another surprise like Sakuna for the fall. Still they are the other publisher with potential to surpass 1 million units on the Switch.Combined just these four companies will surpass 10 million sales this year on the Switch, which will put the relative support of the prior four years into full perspective. 2021 is really the first year where Switch is enjoying third party support in Japan and this will be a major factor in the peak hardware sales we expect Switch to reach. We should get a few new title reveals for the Switch Pro from third parties. All Software Sales PlayStation in Japan:PS1 - 160 millionPS2 - 180 millionPSP - 77 millionTOTAL - 257 millionPS3 - 74 millionPSV - 28 millionTOTAL - 102 millionPS4 - 50 million*Overall its Sony losing market share since the PS2/PSP days, they shed close to 155 million software transitioning to PS3/PSV and over 50 million going to the PS4/PSVR, PS5/PSVR2 is looking like it will continue the decline putting software sales on the system potentially in a similar place to the Wii U without Nintendo's output.Wii - 75 millionDS - 213 millionTOTAL - 288 millionWii U - 15 million3DS - 226 millionTOTAL - 241 millionOverall Nintendo managed to keep the same audience despite Wii U being such a failure, that's down to stronger software sales on a platform that ended up selling less than the DS.Switch seems to be heading towards surpassing DS by 2023-2024 in Japan so software sales will likely end up over 300 million during it's lifetime currently it's at about half way through it's life with peak software years ahead of it 2021 will be the peak year until it's surpassed by 2022. This happening while only facing the PS5 in Japan is definitely going to accelerate third party support in the coming years for the Switch despite not really getting much support for it's first four years on the market, Japanese third parties are about to capitalize especially with a potential Pro launching in the fall. 7. For quite some years I have been dreaming about a crossover racing game which would include Wave Race, 1080° Snowboarding, and Excitebike. With 2021 being N64’s 25th anniversary, I thought that now might as well be the time to share my wish. Two of these three series got their life started on Nintendo 64 (Wave Race and 1080° Snowboarding) and did receive sequels since, but even those were quite some time ago. And though Excitebike got a spiritual successor in Excite Truck (with the OG title being on NES), it’s N64’s outing that I’m probably most fond of. My idea for the game has you dropping out of a helicopter, snowboard attached, and lets you begin cursing down a mountain, weaving in and out of trees, going off ramps, breaking through secret paths, and competing with others till you reach the bottom. When you get to the bottom of the hill, you launch up into the air from off your snowboard and onto your jet ski. Here begins the water racing experience, going between buoys, catching air from waves, finding shortcuts through caves, and passing up fellow jet skiers, as you circle the coast. Once again, upon reaching this segment’s finish line, you’re thrusted into the air and onto your motocross bike. Now that you’re on your bike, begin tearing through mud and forest, as you race others on a different side of the very mountain you started on, making your way towards the finish. In this story mode scenario, each racing experience has three checkpoints which count as three different laps. That makes for a nine linear traveling lap experience. My vision has a game with eight separate mountains/coasts/terrain, so that you get eight of each snowboard/jet ski/motocross locales to race on. You will also see other racers in the far distance whether you are ahead or behind them, even if they are in a different section of the race. And finally, you can opt to just independently play Wave Race, 1080° Snowboarding, or Excitebike courses if you want a shorter race. Couch racing for four, online for more, leaderboards, etc. each of the three racing games nowadays if sold for $60 a pop, might not be convincing enough to buy for the modern gamer. All three bundled into one grand experience, I think would be an easy sell and something so different than Mario Kart, that neither would cannibalize the others’ sales. I also made a video that further highlights some of my details and uses plenty of hand gestures to explain my ideas, ha ha. Is this something you’d buy for Nintendo Switch? Thank you in advance for your feedback! Edit: (A few more bits from my video) Courses could by the way, go in a different order: 1) Jet Ski from one island to another, hop on your motocross, and make you way up the mountain, to then snowboard down the other side. 2) Motocross from the bottom of the mountain to the top, proceed to snowboard down the opposite side, and then jet ski around the bend, making your way back into the mountain, traveling up a raging river. Oh and I did talk in the video about making the jumping out of the helicopter part, Pilotwings-like, so there always is the potential of this being a 4-way title with some more tweaking. Second edit: I forgot that the Wave Race series was actually born on Game Boy in 1992 and not the N64. 8. It has nothing to do with the source material, the fundamental problem is that the film studios don't understand what part of the story in the game is appealing. With a lot of horror game adaptations, the focus tends to be shifted away from horror and towards action. This to me shows that the writers watched a let's play or just saw some scenes or pictures. They miss how much more terrifying it is to exist in that world rather than watching it from outside. So, the tone is completely off. I wonder if anyone who made the movie actually experienced the game as intended (the monsters was on point, though). Part of the charm of some video games is how stilted and quirky the lines are, especially compared to the seriousness of the story. Movies iron out all these quirks and end up with a boring, unoriginal product. Resident evil also forgot they were a horror action franchise. Sometimes they completely miss what makes a game popular and focus on the boring stuff instead. Assassin's creed is so beloved for the history parts of the game and experiencing a society from different places and times. The movie focused on the modern era, with the protagonist mostly known for being boring. They also whitewashed the main historical character by having the same actor playing him as the modern protagonist. They were different people. (Prince of Persia was even worse and put Jake Gyllenhaal in the role of the lead). Sometimes they make a movie out of a game that shouldn't. Hitman, for example is a game that is basically a pretty looking gimmick. The story is not as important as your creativity with killing people. It's basically just a puzzle game and not even a very serious one. Another game that should never have been adapted was Angry Birds, which reflects the main problem: they're all cash grabs without a soul. (for some reason Angry Birds 2 is one of the highest scoring video game movies, though). Some movies that were (sort of) successful or considered guilty pleasures include Mortal Kombat (really campy), the first Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (campy), Sonic the Hedgehog (listened to fans), Detective Pikachu (3D Pokémon and Ryan Reynolds), World of Warcraft (Chinese Market) and despite everything Resident Evil remains the most successful video game adaptations ever. It would be a lot better if movies don't take themselves too seriously, but too many do. 9. Nintendo's more popular handhelds have had very long lifespans, in the neighborhood of 10 years. I think the Nintendo Switch will wind up in that territory. The thing is Nintendo has been hinting at this publicly too. For the last year or so, they keep talking about how the Switch is just entering the middle of its lifespan. So it’s got a ways to go.I do think it’s worth mentioning something that will probably come up. There’s a theory that Nintendo is done with generations as we know them, and instead will iterate on the Switch idea into infinity, like Apple does with iOS. It doesn’t sound impossible - imagine games like Zelda and Mario getting minor updates for years to come to keep them running in later iterations of the hardware. We do see this on iOS - a lot of the best games from 10 years ago are still available, updated infrequently with stuff like support for larger screen sizes as they come out, 64 bit, etc.I think if Nintendo was planning to go down that road they probably wouldn’t talk about this “middle” stuff. I’m not saying that they would have said otherwise at this point - they keep it close to the vest and there’s no reason to tip their hand. I feel like they would never deliberately spread misinformation. 10. I had $63000 in student loans for a college degree. When I graduated from school I had about slightly less at a 7.45% interest rate. At first I tried to get my career started so the loans grew. I remember every time I would get a statement I couldn’t sleep for a few nights. Watching that balance grow was very uneasy. I ended up having a baby (very expensive, so I was really in a mess. Eventually I got tired of the hustle and became a certified armed agent. My income gradually grew and I started making payments based on 30 year payment plans. I kept my expenses low. I started working as a healthcare provider as a second job and started using all that money to pay the loans and still made my regular monthly payment. As my income grew from both jobs I got to the point where I could triple the 10 year payments and yet still survive on what was left over. Overall, due to trying to get my career going it took countless years before I could start paying the loans and then once I started paying, took about 12 months to finally pay off exactly half of the loans. I am now afraid of debt and I never take out any loans anymore. I hate banks with a passion. Just remember, it can be done and it teaches you how to be frugal. I now put away the amount that I need to use to pay my student loans and I am in better financial shape than anyone I know except for a few people and they are extremely successful. So, my simple advice Get a steady paying job Get a second steady paying job Use the income from the first job to make the minimum 30 year payment Use 100% of the money from the second job to go toward student loans As you get raises from the first job apply more and more toward the loans until it is equal to the 10 year payment amount 100% of the raises from the second job still goes toward the student loan Do not get other debt….ever Once paid off, use the money you paid into student loans to invest (get a low fee index fund) or save up for a house. Remember, they are your loans, not your spouses, not your parents, and not the taxpayers. Do not get mad because others will not help you, at the same time, make sure they know that you are working so much to pay off student loan debt. Not to take vacations, buy fancy cars or expensive jewelry.
