Nintendo and Japanese 3rd parties report
Konami will soon surpass 3 million sales on the Switch and Baseball Spirits & Yu-gi-oh launching this year they should have no problems reaching something like 4.5 million. If they end up launching Winning Eleven on the Switch it could very well be an even higher total. On their heals will be Capcom with Rise, Stories 2, Generations Ultimate & Ace Attorney both companies will soon be uncontested at the top.
Square does have Dragon Quest III Remake launching this year, so overall they should equal their result for the previous years as this Remake will probably do very well on the Switch as there hasn't been one since the Gameboy Color in 2000. Outside of that Bravely Default 2 (which was one of my favorite games released so far this year) definitely under-performed and failed to see franchise growth. While Neo: The World Ends with You is another title with uncertain potential at this point but should have no problems surpassing 100K sales, with continued sales of DQXIS, we are looking at potential of north of 1 million units for Square.
Marvelous is the shaping up for the third or forth spot this year in competition with Square, a lot depends on whether they can find another surprise like Sakuna for the fall. Still they are the other publisher with potential to surpass 1 million units on the Switch.
Combined just these four companies will surpass 10 million sales this year on the Switch, which will put the relative support of the prior four years into full perspective. 2021 is really the first year where Switch is enjoying third party support in Japan and this will be a major factor in the peak hardware sales we expect Switch to reach.
We should get a few new title reveals for the Switch Pro from third parties.
All Software Sales PlayStation in Japan:
PS1 - 160 million
PS2 - 180 million
PSP - 77 million
TOTAL - 257 million
PS3 - 74 million
PSV - 28 million
TOTAL - 102 million
PS4 - 50 million*
Overall its Sony losing market share since the PS2/PSP days, they shed close to 155 million software transitioning to PS3/PSV and over 50 million going to the PS4/PSVR, PS5/PSVR2 is looking like it will continue the decline putting software sales on the system potentially in a similar place to the Wii U without Nintendo's output.
Wii - 75 million
DS - 213 million
TOTAL - 288 million
Wii U - 15 million
3DS - 226 million
TOTAL - 241 million
Overall Nintendo managed to keep the same audience despite Wii U being such a failure, that's down to stronger software sales on a platform that ended up selling less than the DS.
Switch seems to be heading towards surpassing DS by 2023-2024 in Japan so software sales will likely end up over 300 million during it's lifetime currently it's at about half way through it's life with peak software years ahead of it 2021 will be the peak year until it's surpassed by 2022. This happening while only facing the PS5 in Japan is definitely going to accelerate third party support in the coming years for the Switch despite not really getting much support for it's first four years on the market, Japanese third parties are about to capitalize especially with a potential Pro launching in the fall.
