Numerous reports in the press have reported an unsafe environment in EDs because of overcrowding. The solution for this serious threat to ED staff and harm to patients cannot come from a single department but through the engagement of and ongoing commitment by leaders throughout the hospital and, more largely, by those in the payer and regulatory segments of the health care system as well. This study by Dr. Eric Williams analyzes the current state of ER overcrowding in Detroit, Michigan, and draws correlations between the overcrowding, patient wait times, access to primary health care services within Detroit's public hospitals, and how overcrowding affects the health outcomes of patients who must wait over six hours to receive care. About the Author Detroit native Dr. Eric Dewight Williams has always been a high-energy, conscious, goal-driven individual. Since his late teens, Dr. Williams has had a flair for being innovative, creative, and a problem-solver. After attending Richmond Lenox EMS for his Emergency Medical Technician license and Wayne County Community College for his paramedic license, he began working for the Detroit Fire Department as a paramedic. After working there for 17 years, Dr. Williams accepted a position at the Detroit Medical Center Receiving Hospital as Executive Head Liaison, where he was soon promoted to Senior Advocate over DMC Hospitals. Dr. Williams found himself intrigued by the world of Quality Improvement, so he went back to college to earn various degrees, including an MBA and a Ph.D. in Business Administration, Global Leadership Change (Suma Cum Laude) Top of his class. Dr. Williams resides with his wife in Westland, Michigan. He enjoys working out, reading, and spending time with his family.
