I grew up in a building that looked very much like the one shown in this animation.  I clearly recall reasoning that Santa was fiction based upon the fact that we had no fire place from Santa to descend.

 

The projects, however, actually do have chimneys.  When I was a kid we would dump our trash down a chute where it was periodically incinerated and the noxious smoke was released through a chimney.  Today they use compactors and God know where the smushed-up rubbish goes from there.

 

I recall trying to explain my reasoning to another kid, in an attempt to dispel the myth of Kris Kringle.  The kid simply would not believe me.  Many years later, I heard the kid went on to pastor a church.
