Notes:

African American Bibliophiles are an active and lively group of men and women who meet monthly at a different member's home to discuss books written by authors of African descent. The atmosphere is relaxed and entertaining. The meetings, which are generally held the last Sunday of the month, center not only around the book discussion, but the potluck refreshments as well, which sometimes parallel themes throughout the chosen book for that month. One of the events the African American Bibliophiles look forward to the most is our annual swim party in July, in which we discuss a fun "fluff" book while enjoying barbecue by the poolside. Another popular event is the annual Christmas party, in which we watch a movie or documentary (e.g., Spike Lee's "The Four Little Girls" and "Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored") rather than discussing a book. Although the list of books we've read is extensive, a couple of our favorite authors are Octavia Butler, and Tananarive Due. In addition to reading contemporary works (both fiction and nonfiction), we try to incorporate a classic work (e.g., The Spook Who Sat by the Door, by Sam Greenlee and The Man Who Cried I Am, by John A. Williams) into our discussion at least once a year.
