The Frances E.W. Harper Literary Society was founded by Sandra L. West in 1987 and became a community outreach project of the Newark Public Library in 1988. They read books about civil rights to biography to novels to poetry . Every March, the society hosts a Women's History Month Read-A-Thon at the library, and the community is invited. Most every summer, there is a well-attended writers forum. Past writers have been Rashidah AbuBakr and Louis Reyes Rivera, New York poets and intellectuals. Facilitators are invited to direct debate on book read that month. Past facilitators have been: Susan Robeson, author of He's Got The Whole World In His Hands; and, S.E.Anderson, poet and former SNCC coordinator.
