Notes:

Hekima is a Swahili word that translates into the English equivalent of 'Knowledge". It has served as the book club of the Sonja Haynes Stone Black Cultural Center and the Black Student Movement of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 1997. The group meets monthly to interpret, discuss, and analyze African African literature. Hekima is more than a book club; it is an opportunity for students to make connections between their course work and literature rooted in Black culture. Students learn how to enjoy reading by experiencing literature about themselves and their community. Previous works read include Maker of Saints by Thulani Davis, The Wedding by Dorothy West, Friends and Lovers by Eric Jerome Dickey. We have also welcomed in the past Octavia Butler, Edwidge Danticat and Gloria Naylor as Hekima guest authors.
