ProfD Posted January 9 Report Posted January 9 https://apnews.com/article/wildfire-southern-california-santa-ana-winds-b565a3bd043d6444820f1571b2307bf1 Thousands of acres of multimillion dollar homes are burning up in Los Angeles. Houses, cars and material possessions can be replaced. Human life cannot. Anyone living in the path of the fires should evacuate when ordered to do so. Stay safe.

The worst part of it is that homeowners insurance is hard to obtain and expensive in the areas affected. Luckily, many of the people affected by this wildfire are rich. They already have a 2nd or 3rd home if they choose not to rebuild in LA. So far, about 17,000 acres burned up in the wildfire. Unfortunately, about 5 people lost their lives.
Pioneer1 Posted January 9 Report Posted January 9 Troy WTF! Wildfires in the winter time?! is that a thing? Southern California doesn't really have a "Winter". When I lived on the Westcoast, they had a dry season and a wet season. ProfD The worst part of it is that homeowners insurance is hard to obtain and expensive in the areas affected I heard that some insurance companies are actually CANCELING the policies of some customers now because of the fires! That shit is criminal.
ProfD Posted January 10 Author Report Posted January 10 https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/video-shows-mayor-karen-bass-refuse-answer-l-fires-questions-returns-t-rcna186957 Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass looks like a deer in headlights when confronted about her actions regarding city budget and being on vacation during the wildfires. It's always interesting how folks want to *blame* someone else for natural disasters. Mayor Bass could not have done anything short of finding the spark that set it off. Otherwise, it would have taken every fire truck in California, Nevada and Arizona to prevent that wildfire from spreading so fast. The whole point of natural disaster destruction and loss of life from natural disasters is Mother Nature's way of showing us that 1) we don't know sh8t and 2) we are powerless when the Earth needs to purge itself. 4 hours ago, Pioneer1 said: I heard that some insurance companies are actually CANCELING the policies of some customers now because of the fires! That shit is criminal. I believe the insurance policies were cancelled before the latest wildfires but as a result of past blazes. The state of California has an insurance that covers residential properties up $3 million dollars and business properties up to $20 million dollars. The real question is why do people want to live in a tinderbox of a state. It's hot and dry with a lot of trees.

Yeah, it’s the same hair in Florida, but it seemed like I always heard about wildfires during a summer months. 16 minutes ago, ProfD said: The real question is why do people want to live in a tinderbox of a state. It's hot and dry with a lot of trees. I guess for the same reason people wanna live on the beach here in Florida. It’s beautiful. Generally, it is the very wealthy who can afford to do that, but then you have the worker bees (cleaning people, wait staff, etc who tried to live nearby and suffer the most.

Rhetorical question. Several reasons people to chose to stay and/or live in or move to certain places. I personally wouldn't build or buy a house in a natural disaster zone (flood, wildfire, hurricane, tornado, mud, etc.). But, I get it that location, weather and scenery can make a place desirable to live.
ProfD Posted January 11 Author Report Posted January 11 On cue, Right wing folks are blaming Democratic leadership for failure in response to the wildfires. They are mentioning budget cuts and DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) and the mayor traveling to Ghana are reasons that an area of Los Angeles the size of Pittsburgh has burned up. California has been a tinderbox for decades. They could cleared brush and cut down trees a long time ago. Of course, the people didn't want to give up the beautiful scenery, views and outdoor activities. Politicians act like children when it comes to pointing fingers at each other instead of solving problems.
ProfD Posted January 13 Author Report Posted January 13 Prison inmates are being used to help firefighters contain the wildfires in Los Angeles. The inmates earn less than $10 per day. Of course, there is no guarantee that once released, the inmates will be able to get a job as a firefighter. Under different circumstances, many of those homeowners would not allow inmates anywhere near their homes. 1
Troy Posted January 13 Report Posted January 13 @ProfD I was in your neck of the woods this weekend actually still here stuck at IAD on the typical frontier airline delay. It is stupid cold here. Looking forward to going back to Southern Trumpistan. Enjoy the inauguration next week. I have not watched the news in a couple of weeks so I really can’t appreciate the devastation in Los Angeles. From what I gathered is not just mansions of the wealthy, but modest homes are being destroyed as well. I hope none of the inmates were compelled to fight the fire and that none of them lose their lives doing so…

That should melt the remaining snow. 4 hours ago, Troy said: I have not watched the news in a couple of weeks so I really can’t appreciate the devastation in Los Angeles. Hopefully, they're not being exposed to the most dangerous aspects of it for which other firefighters get paid to do.
Pioneer1 Posted January 19 Report Posted January 19 Those inmates are pretty much slaves and they see them as dispensable. The only reason they aren't being OFFICIALLY considered slaves is because they're getting SOME compensation. That's one of the only reasons prisoners get paid ANYTHING. To prevent people from calling them full fledged slaves.
