Thursday at 09:22 PM1 day comment_81908 Recently @Pioneer1 asked, "Are Things Better Today Than 40 or 50 Years Ago?" One thing that is worse is the lack of reputable sources of news, covering topic important to Black folks. There is no shortage of individuals spouting opinions, but far fewer sources of true journalism. Journalism where verified factual information is collected and presented with as little bias as possible. It is so bad today, people reject facts in favor of anything that comports with their current worldview; even rejected science in favor of their own research typically sources from individuals spouting opinions or just outright lying.I lean liberal so I listen to NPR fairly regularly and I'll get headline from Democracy Now every now and then. I have subscriptions to the Amsterdam News and the Afro. That sadly is about it for me. I really liked Emerge back in the day. Where do you consume news and information important to Black folks? Thursday at 10:13 PM1 day comment_81911 First of all let us make an important distinction: There's a huge difference between Black Journalists and Black JournalismWhile there are thousands of Black Journalists around the nation.....you can see them on almost every venue....I think Black Journalism has taken a HUGE hit in these past 40 or 50 years. The schools in the United States simply aren't producing enough professional and qualified pro-Black students who want to grow up and be Journalists for the community to cover our issues (Black Journalism).I mentioned many times before that back in the day, just like nearly every Black community in America had it's own news paper....nearly every Black highschool and even some middle schools had a news paper!Black children who were interested and showed talent learned how to gather information and present it to the public. If you were "fortunate" enough to go to a Black school.....you grew up learning HOW to present information to other Black people who were your primary and target audience.Integration killed it.Having said that:I'll go to the mainstream media for general news including the news the pertains to us and compliment it.A few sources I go to to compliment the news I get from the mainstream media would be:News - Final Call NewsIndisputable with Dr. Rashad Richey - YouTubeTariq Radio - YouTubeAnd several other outlets.I know many of them aren't official news sources, but the people often present information that they've gathered about a story that affects US that was left out of the mainstream press. Yesterday at 01:18 AM1 day comment_81915 Oh, puleeze. Journalism is journalism. There should be no difference between black journalists and any other ones. The truth is the truth, facts are facts, objectivity is the gold standard. Ideally, jouralism fufills its role of shining the light in dark places in order to expose and report events. (Fox News epitomizes the violation of journalistic principles and, imo, we don't need black counterparts of it.)Actually, there's no such thing as an official black point of view anymore because Blacks have diversified their politics and are found on both sides of the political spectrum. There's no guarantee that exclusively black oriented news outlets won't be inaccurate and misleading and sponsor-controlled.Op-ed is the designated domaine for people who want to air grievances and promote their point of view and you dont't have to be a journalist to utilize it.Admittedly, however, the Fourth Estate, like all of Society's other traditional institutions, has strayed from its principles, and the news media has become compromised, and lost much of its credibility with everybody, not just Blacks.I confess to gravitating toward any source that reinforces my moderate middle of the road beliefs so I check out the racially-mixed, bi-partisan panel groups on CNN and MSNBC and - dare I say it, snap shots on - FaceBook, that provide a digest of political reels featuring pod casters and pundits and outraged celebrities ranting against Trumpism. And, because I've become so fed-up with the futility of it all, - with "the- more-things-change-the-more-they-become-the-same" vibe that is permeating the country, I still faithfully watch Bill Maher. I like, in addition to having an interesting cross section of guests, his hilarious MAD MAGAZINE approach to current events, reducing everything to sly humor, deflating and chastising the Far Left, and ridiculing the dumb-ass MAGA crowd. He's a true iconoclast. 11 hours ago11 hr comment_81928 I suspected Bill Maher was a racist years ago when he was criticizing Arabs and asked where was the "Chris Rock" of the Arab world to hold Arabs accountable for their behavior......revealing that he along with many other Whites not only approved of but held Chris Rock's "Blacks vs Niggas" routine in high regard when it comes to criticizing the Black community and wished there were Arabs who were just as bold in doing so. 8 hours ago8 hr comment_81954 Technology has lowered the barrier to entry in a number of areas. Journalism is one such area. Even with an abundance of disposable content, there's still outlets for good Black journalism.Nowadays, good Black journalism can be found in local publications & podcasts. Really depends on what the reader wants to know.😎 Report
