'All we can do is pray.' Thousands without power nearly 2 weeks after Indiana storm

As thousands of northwestern Indiana residents remain without electricity nearly two weeks after a violent Aug. 11 storm, officials have taken to social media voicing frustration over the lengthy restoration delays.

Roughly 9,000 customers in Gary, Indiana, remained without electricity on Aug. 23, Gary Mayor Eddie Melton said in a video posted to the city's Facebook.

"We’re at Day 12 and 12 days is too long for families to be without power," Melton said. "Twelve days is too long for parents to worry about their children and for businesses to lose revenue and for families to wonder when the relief is finally going to come. I want you to know I share that frustration."

Why....is a relatively large city within a mega-metropolitan area in the world's wealthiest nation going without power for nearly 2 weeks now in 2026?

Shouldn't we be far more advanced than this by now?

While they're spending HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS of dollars shooting up the deserts in Iran, you have Gary and even cities in southern California experiencing rolling black-outs on the regular because of shitty out dated infrastructures.

The city of Gary with about 67k residents is 75% Black. Power could have been restored in a matter of days. Follow the money.

Sure. The USA is technologically advanced enough to deal with these types of problem very quickly.

A willingness to spend the money is usually the main reason things happen slowly.

A predominantly Black city that does not have enough money to bring in large scale temporary power & other resources will have to wait around until they can afford to be helped or a benefactor comes along whether it is state, local, federal or private.

Well it IS the job of the State and Federal Government to come to the aid of localities when they are hit with natural disasters.
It's not a favor.
That's what governments actually exist for.

You have a Black mayor over one of America's largest cities just 30 or 40 miles away who could shuttle manpower and resources over the state lines to help out a distressed Gary and get the power back up and running...if he wasn't so busy trying to help Latinos.

Gary Indiana just hasn't been the same since The Jackson Five & factories left many decades ago.

It hasn't been the same since the steel industry declined and a lot of good paying factory jobs that allowed Black men to make good livings for themselves and support their families left....and the dope came pouring in.

Both of them are similar in that they are both mid-sized Black cities that were once was alive and thriving because of a strong manufacturing base that gave Black people a good source of income.

Their decline was no accident.

Back in the day....the 60s, 70s, and early 80s.....I think it was more than just lip service.
The Democrats actually provided SUBSTANCE to the Black community in the form of legislation, jobs, government assistance, community programs, etc.....
They actually provided TANGIBLES to our community to keep our support.

I've been in nice hotels when the power goes off for whatever reason.
All you experience is a little BLINK...and the back-up generator powers it back up in no time until the real problem can be fixed.

I'm sure most of those centers have powerful back-up generators just to keep the power on for whatever emergency may arise.

The way those place need to be protected from over heating, I bet the Data Center nearest to Gary consumes enough power in AIR CONDITIONING ALONE to power the city back up.
