Yeah James H. Cone is a scholar more people should be familiar with.  Interestingly I only learned about his work as a result of AALBC.com a couple of years ago Cone published The Cross and the Lynching Tree

According to the original manuscripts and translations of the New Testament Jesus wasn't nailed to a cross.

He was hung on a tree.

In other words he was lynched by the Roman authorities.

The cross didn't become a Christian symbol until Constantine made it so centuries later.
