Unfortunately, dysfunctional entertainment sells whether it's radio, TV, places of worship, social media, etc. 

 

Glorifying the most ignorant and negative aspects of society rakes in a lot of dough.

 

The question to ask is why do people have a huge appetite for garbage entertainment.

 

It's the mental equivalent of junk food or the medical equivalent of Flintstones chewable tablets. 😎

I'm not high-brow or immune to indulging in mindless entertainment either. 

 

I still love certain types of music and movies that  aren't overly constructive.  But, I like to think that  I'm capable of maintaining a balance. 

 

Of course, many of us grew up during a time of censorship.  There was the FCC and a rating system for content. 

 

Our parents kept the Redd Foxx and Millie Jackson records and porn hidden and only listened to and/or watched it when the kids were not around. 

 

That old stuff pales in comparison to what is broadcast nowadays.  The filters are wide open. 

 

A steady dose of negative entertainment is being fed to the masses in order to reinforce stereotypes and dysfunction and also keep folks dazed and confused. 

 

IMO, we  could more responsible for how black folks are portrayed and exploited in entertainment starting with media platforms within our control.  😎

Blacks like portraying themselves as thugs. Even Black athletes who get paid millions try and portray themselves as thugs. Its absurd and so immature.

The actor Ned Beatty said something to interesting. He most TV father's are fools. I think he made the comment around the time of roots.

It may have be been Charles Barkley. When being told her was a bad role model for kids.

 

How many popular TV shows have uplifting or inspirational characters?

A mother and father should be the role model, i agree.

@Delano, entertainment definitely should not be viewed as a replacement for real world role models i.e. parents, family members, teachers, mentors, etc.  

 

Unfortunately, some folks will be heavily influenced by what they see and hear through entertainment and their external environment too. 

 

There is enough capacity within entertainment to reinforce positive role models and influence constructive results.  😎

I was influenced by TV and movies , music not so much.

 

At various points I haven't owned a TV or I watched it infrequently.

 

One of my favourite TV shows is the  best TV advertisements. Nothing else comes close. Although that was over 20 years ago. Recently I watched the best Superbowl Ad from the last two years. Not so good.
