Julian Mayfield (June 6, 1928 – October 20, 1984) was an influential writer, civil rights activist, and cultural figure. He played a significant role in promoting social justice and Black consciousness during the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Mayfield’s works, including his critically acclaimed novel The Long Night and his memoir My Face Is Black, explored themes of race, identity, and the African American experience. He also a member of the Harlem Writers Guild, an important literary collective that supported Black writers and their creative endeavors. Mayfield’s contributions to literature and activism made him an important figure in African American history.

Mayfield also starred in and co-authored the screenplay for Jules Dassin’s 1968 movie, Uptight (clip below).
