Viola Ford Fletcher is a prominent figure in African American history and a survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. Born on May 1, 1907, she was one of the last living survivors of the tragic event. The Tulsa Race Massacre was a devastating racial violence incident that took place in the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, which was then known as the prosperous and vibrant “Black Wall Street.” In May 1921, a white mob attacked the predominantly Black community, resulting in the destruction of homes, businesses, and the loss of many lives.
