Notes

Circle of Friends is a group of African American women who share a love for reading and discussing books. The group meets, by alphabetical rotation, the last Friday of each month at the home of a member. Each member brings a dish, and the hostess supplies dessert and the beverage. So, in addition to good book discussions, there's also good eating. Each member selects a book (by an African American writer) of her choice for discussion, so there is always a nice mix of authors and subjects. Dues are collected ($12) once a year to cover any necessary mailings and for flowers and cards when a member or someone in her immediate family is ill. The group occasionally gets together to attend lectures and related activities and has a yearly anniversary celebration. For the Christmas holidays, the group draws names and exchanges gifts in January (no meeting in November or December).
