"Holocaust in the Homeland tells the story of one of the darkest days in US history. Envious locals in Tulsa dubbed the Greenwood section "Black Wall Street" because of its economic success, but that success was obliterated by a riot in 1921. The riot completely razed Greenwood, destroying the lives of its 10,000 residents. This account sees the events through the eyes of a fictional reporter. It offers perspective and hope. The events of Memorial Day, 1921 were hidden for the better part of a century, but knowing the truth about that day is critical to understanding ourselves and our motives and will ultimately make us all safer in an unsafe world. Today, just as in 1921, media hype too often obscures truth and embraces hype because hype is more interesting. The truth about this event must no longer be kept secret. Follow Sam Stackhouse, an old man remembering, as he discovers truth and wisdom"—Page [4] of cover.

Man’s soul is never content in isolation, but there he dwells. He is alone at the beginning and alone at the end. Only the brief moments of connection to another heart keep him moving toward the sun. The Ghost of Blackwater Creek is the son of a hoodoo woman and a freed slave. His skin is the color of spilled milk and his hair looks like clean yellow tassels bursting from a new ear of corn. He does not fit into either world, so his mother attempts to keep him from harm by raising him in isolation with wolves and bobcats for companions. He grows up with a code of his own, one of survival and primal justice. He has only his mother then when he loses her, he is completely bereft of human companionship until he fulfills his destiny-a destiny foretold by his mother. By saving a child of his own family, a family he has never known, he finds what he seeks. The story has historical links to a Southern tragedy that took place in North Florida in 1934 but all characters are fictional. The details of the lynching, however, are based on the actual event.

If you pay attention to our media you may have concluded that there is a black male crisis in America. We are constantly inundated with images of black men as lazy, irresponsible thugs, deadbeat dads and “playas” who only think about listening to rap music, chasing women and blaming society for their failures. But is this the only reality for black men? Are black men really an endangered species? Contrary to negative media generated stereotypes it is my belief that there is no black male crisis and the future for black men is actually bright with lots of reasons for optimism.

For some, this statement is a denial of the challenges facing black men. To which I reply, I recognize all of the challenges facing men of color in this country. I am not blind to an unfair justice system that systematically and unfairly incarcerates black men simply because of the color of their skin. I watch the news as black men are senselessly and unjustly gunned down in the streets by the men in uniform who have sworn to protect them and then walk away scot-free without being held accountable for their actions. I have my heart broken on a daily basis as I watch racists men and women claim superiority and privilege based solely on their belief that their race is superior to my own. I have personally had to deal with KKK members who attempted to scare me out of my position in a building supply center in a city where I was told to my face “we don’t allow n%gg$#ers to run anything in our city”.

As a man who happens to be black, I have first hand experience of the multiplicity of challenges facing black men and yet I still remain optimistic that our best days are ahead of us rather than behind us.

The primary reason for my optimism is simple. I choose to be 100% responsible for my life and no one or no thing can keep me from succeeding except me. It is this simple attitude that has allowed me to overcome being a high school dropout with a criminal record who was able to climb the corporate ladder and become a successful mid level manager for a multi-million dollar building supply center at the tender age of 22. It was this same attitude that allowed me to overcome divorce, bankruptcy, foreclosure and a deep state of depression to now being a successful entrepreneur, author (5 books) motivational speaker, radio & TV host. I am living proof of whats possible for black men and I have made it my life’s work to share the lessons I’ve learned to support others in living extraordinary lives.

So in the words of Public Enemy, “Don’t believe the hype”, black men are doing a lot better than the media would have you believe and there is no black male crisis in America.

by Corinda Pitts Marsh

Read Detailed Book Description

Southern stories step gently into our minds, and A Civil War starts out gently enough, but when the savagery of the Gothic South appears, the gentle must become the strong. Each character seeks freedom, but freedom was then as it is today, illusive. The American Civil War is synonymous with man’s struggle for freedom, but that struggle did not end in 1865 at Appomattox, just as the struggles of these characters did not end with emancipation. Some are enslaved by other men, some by societal mores, and others by love. This story follows one Southern family and its slaves as their lives mesh to form the fabric of a new world, but the new world is no less hostile than the old. Finally two children of love bring the family full circle, but none of them are ever free from their shackles. Characters battle throughout their lives to find reason in an unreasonable world. The story is supported by historically accurate details of life in Cahawba, Alabama, the site of one of the largest Confederate prisons, and Selma, Alabama, where foundries produced ships, cannons, and ammunition that supported the cause of the Confederacy. In addition, small insights into the lives of major Civil War figures such as Jefferson Davis lend veracity to the saga. Corinda Pitts Marsh is a native of Northwest Florida and holds a Ph.D. in English from Florida State University. She is now retired.

Taylor challenges you to focus your attention on four important aspects of who you are as a human being, those areas are; The Intellectual, Emotional, Physical and Spiritual. Once these areas are balanced, you will experience the true meaning of "The Truth Shall Set You Free".

Contrary to the media, Entrepreneur, Author and Motivational Speaker Michael Taylor believes that the future is filled with unlimited possibilities for black men (and women). In this book, Taylor shares with his readers how he overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles to live his dream of owning his own company and making a difference in the world.

" The greatest challenge we as black Americans face isn’t racism and discrimination, but our willingness to embrace our own human potential" quotes Taylor.

He does not deny the obstacles, yet concludes that there are opportunities out there for those of us who are willing to put forth the effort. His book is his way of sharing his recipe for success to those who will listen.

" What is missing for us as black men and women is balance. Most of us have not learned how to balance the intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual aspects of who we are as human beings. when we learn to balance these four areas of our lives then we are truly successful" states Taylor.

Of course creating balance takes effort and guidance and that is the purpose of the book, to be a guide to true success. The book consist of ten chapters. Those chapters include

1. The "That’s what white people do" mentality.
This chapter discusses how societal and cultural conditioning can keep a person from succeeding in life. It addresses how the negative stereotypes perpetuated by the media conditions some people to not reach their full potential. (read an excerpt)

2. Personal Growth: An investment in Self.
Understanding ourselves is the foundation of personal development. In this chapter Taylor shares how our unwillingness to participate in things like therapy and seminars keeps us from fully expressing our true selves. He talks about overcoming depression and dealing with traumatic events from his childhood.

3. Relationships
Once we commit to addressing our emotional and psychological issues, then and only then can we create open, supportive, loving caring relationships. The key to creating strong family units comes from our ability to create great relationships. In this chapter Taylor dispels the myth that black men are "dogs" and can create loving monogamous relationships.

4. Sex and Manhood
There are so many myths surrounding black men and sex that it would take an entire book to cover them all. In this chapter some of those myths are clarified and eliminated. Taylor speaks openly and honestly about our responsibility in having loving. intimate monogamous sexual relations, and how to create and maintain them.

5. Children
The greatest challenge for black men in regards to raising children is the ability to understand nurturing. Most of us are still using the old-school method of parenting, which included raising our sons to be tough and detached emotionally. Taylor provides the readers with some clear cut exercises and suggestions on being a better parent.

6. Health & Fitness
Although black men epitomizes health and fitness through sports, black men lead the nation in death in most health related illnesses. As a former personal trainer and health enthusiast, Taylor lays out the foundation for creating a lifelong regime for excellent health.

7. Success and Wealth
Each person has their own definition of success, in this chapter Taylor discusses the importance of creating a game-plan for your financial future.

8. God & Spirituality
Having a spiritual connection is a very private and personal experience. Each individual must come to their own conclusions regarding their spiritual paths. In this chapter Taylor shares his own experience in making his connection.

9. Purpose
We each have special gifts and talents that should be expressed. This chapter is about uncovering those gifts and connecting to one’s purpose in life.

10. Service
When we take all the chapters of this book, and understand ourselves for who we are, then we can express our unique gifts and talents to the world. This chapter covers the need to give back to the community and humanity.

Excerpt from Chapter 1

"When you think of the Civil Rights Movement, what one word comes to mind? Freedom? Equality? Power? For me the one word is "ACCESS." When I think of why our brothers gave their lives I realize that they simply wanted "ACCESS." They knew that if they had "ACCESS" to the knowledge and information, then ultimately they could achieve everything their white counterparts had achieved. So now that it’s 1999, and we have that "ACCESS," who’s responsible for our success? We are! It is completely up to us to take advantage of the doors that are wide open to us today.

Ultimately as a Black American you only have two choices in which you can view our situation. First, you have the choice to view us as victims, a small group of people that is constantly abused, disrespected and on the edge of extinction. Or you can see us as we truly are, a group of people that is the epitome of strength and perseverance; a group of people that knows and lives the word "commitment." A group of people brought to a strange land with nothing but the clothes on their backs; brought to a place that was totally foreign and new. Because of their determination and courage, they were able to adapt, and despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles, they have prospered and cut their niche in a place that tried everything in their power to keep them separate. How, my brothers, can you not be empowered by that? What other evidence do you need of our greatness? That, in itself, should be enough to inspire you to go out into the world with your head held high. So take a moment and acknowledge the greatness within you. You must understand that you are a very important part of history and no one is going to deny us what we deserve. Stand proud, my brothers, and bask in your greatness."
