5 Things Writers Must Do To Survive Online

Somehow writers have been duped, by large corporations, into believing that the small potential for notoriety is ample compensation for their work, which collectively is used to generate millions and millions of dollars of revenue. I remember how disappointed and angry some writers were when the Huffington-Post was sold to AOL for $315 million. Meanwhile those writers continued to receive no financial compensation for their work.

There is a often quoted slogan floating around the Internet, “Information Wants to be Free”. It is almost a cliche, but it also utter nonsense in the context of our capitalist system. Anything of value is always sold and purchased, why is a writer’s work any different? A more accurate slogan might be, “Corporations Want Information for Free ”, so that they may exploit it for monetary again (read the entire article).

Web Sites That Support, Promote and Sell Books Written by Black Writers

While updating this list this morning I was saddened to discover that North Paran’s website has been discontinued. When it first launched, over three years ago, I was impressed by the site’s design but I was more impressed the site’s mission; to donate a book, to a child in need, for every book that was sold. The growth Amazon and social media will never make up for the loss of sites like North Paran.

I did however add a site Romance in Color (RIC). RIC is not a new site. The 13 year old site touts itself as "the premier site with a focus on the African-America romance." If you enjoy that genre visit their website.

Rising from Ashes - Documentary Chronicles Rise of Rwanda Cycling Team

Over the course of a hundred days in 1994, the East African nation of Rwanda experienced an ethnic cleansing which consumed the lives of nearly a fifth of the population. The mass slaughter came as a consequence of a revolt by the majority tribe, the Hutus, against the Tutsis, a minority which, with the help of the country’s European colonizers, had enjoyed a higher social and economic status for centuries.

A few years after the cessation of the civil war, American bike racing legend Jock Boyer was looking for a chance at redemption in the wake of being paroled after serving time in prison… in Rwanda, he took on the unenviable challenge of coaching the national cycling team. And over the next six years he trained them while teaching them how to compete on the level of World-Class athletes with the hope of one day qualifying for the Olympics.

But the magic of the moment is pretty much lost on John aka MC Wordsmith (Dorian Missick), James aka Jay-V (Gbenga Akinnagbe) and Terry aka DJ Malik (Darien Sills-Evans), despite the fact that they’re black and hail from the ‘hood.

Back in the early Nineties, the three shared a brief promising career as the Down Low Poets, a fledgling hip-hop group which produced a video, two singles and an unreleased album before disappearing from the record-biz radar. The band disbanded, went their separate ways and lost touch entirely.
