Applications Now Open: 2027–2028 Lafayette FellowshipDear Friends,
Building on the success of the Lafayette Fellowship’s launch last year and following a successful Summer Leadership Program with our inaugural cohort, I am delighted to announce that applications for the 2027–2028 Lafayette Fellowship are now open. They will remain open through December 1, 2026.
This program offers a unique opportunity to join the next generation of young leaders committed to strengthening the transatlantic relationship. The Lafayette Fellowship funds one year of master's-level study in France for up to 30 outstanding American students.
Open to both Francophone and non-Francophone candidates, the program partners with leading French universities and grandes écoles across STEM, the humanities, the social sciences, and the arts, with degree programs offered in French or entirely in English.
In addition to their academic studies, Fellows participate in the French-American Leadership Program, which provides an immersive introduction to French and European innovation, culture, and public policy, alongside mentorship opportunities.
Last summer, our inaugural Fellows traveled to Paris, Avignon, Arles, and Marseille for the opening chapter of the program. Through masterclasses with leading figures, visits to major institutions, and unique cultural experiences, they discovered France from multiple perspectives while building a strong community of their own. Their journey will continue throughout the year, with additional sessions in Strasbourg and the Paris region. You can learn more about the inaugural cohort's Summer Leadership Program here. OCTOBER Favorite films + musicsThis event began 09/30/2025 and repeats every year forever
Someone asked me to give old horror films i recommend and are my favorites... I added some good to watch, what say you?
Recommended
The Seventh Victim- 1943- you may enjoy this one, I saw this for the first time recently. The end is electric, a human horror or is it?:) I want to know if you think this is more frightening than rosemary's baby?
The Uninvited 1944- I despise that the studios demanded the ending where the ghost is revealed. it is the films only blemish.
The Innocents 1961- the chiaroscuro in this film is brilliant, plus the story shows how human horror can be. A favorite of mine but i recommend.
The Haunting 1963 - the chiaroscuro in this film, is brilliant
Kuroneko 1968 - it is romantic so may be one of the best to watch with a partner. the beginning is so straight forward
The Wicker Man- 1973- you thought you could come her, a man alone, and defeat all of us, brilliant. Outside the introductory message which is temporally brilliant, the ego of the cop guy,... in the wicker man it is the arrogance to go into horror, that is the trick for me. Alot of other films these people didn't know or didn't want but here, this guy walks into it. the horror of human arrogance. A Favorite of mine but I recommend.
Favorite
The Body Snatcher 1945- I love the plot, every character has value, every character has purpose, for me it is great writing, and I love when human horror blends with supernatural horror.
Isle of the Dead 1945 - again Luten, The premise is great, the reason why they are in this little island works, and the rest is magic.
Invasion of the Body Snatcher 1956- it is campy but classic. it is a classic example of how a writer can make a premise that doesn't require non humans creature to still have creatures.
The Masque of the Red Death 1964 - I just love hearing Vincent Price say, I was a worshipper of Satan when no one else was:) classic.
The Devil Rides Out 1968 - thank god... yes, it is he you must thank:) the fact that a character actually explains the supernatural in this film.is underrated. yes, the special effects are campy.
Night of the Living Dead 1969 - the action of this horror film, great use
Not Recommended or Favorite but a good watch
Phantom of the opera 1925 - You need to see the restored version, i got to see it on turner classic movies. The end is great cause it exposes the truth, that many miss, the phantom's real weapon isn't his face but his manipulation of the emotions of the masses, their fear.
Cat People 1942- Val Lewton. As a fellow writer you may be interested to know that Luten wrote many screenplays that were never made. He produced cat people but he was involved in all his films production.
The Picture of Dorian Grey 1945- if you are fan of angela lansbury , cry:)
Night of the hunter 1955 human horror, very tense, not spooky, a crime drama but man
House on Haunted Hill 1959 - the plot is lovely
Carnival of SOuls 1962- great hook at the end
Onibaba 1964- great blend of magic and human horror
Second 1966- another human horror, it is human society that is the horror, nice angular cinematography
Event Horizon 1997 liberate tuteme:) hahaah not old, but consider it, love the premise.
The autopsy of Jane Doe 2016- not old, not black and white, but the use of light and shadow and the premise, considering who the criminal really is:)

15 underrated 1970s sci fi films
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FM_mgmy0dN0
1974 the conversation
One of Gene Hackman's greatest roles.
When you think about a film like the matrix, what makes the conversation so much more frightening is that coppola doesn't involve the fantastical elements and leaves it all into humanity. Hackman's character Karl is Neo but absent anywhere to go or any abilities to gain while in a system only going to get stronger. The fact that hackman later played in enemy of the state about the same topic and received much better acclaim shows you how good the conversation is.
One thing is the end of the conversation , when hackman's surveillance turns out to be erroneous and he is in shock to a friend but then when he picks up a phone his watchers profess he is being watched and his watchers admit to him it is a holistic surveillance. The failure of the individual to compete next to the state in the business of surveillance is the closing theme of the story. Their is also a movie with Sandra Bullock around identity control, which is similar to Hackman's old film and similarly didn't get the accolades for the raw approach.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huYQ7x0v9E8
1970 colossus, the forbin project
James Hong citing. The key is access.
Funny how Wargames and the Terminator both have as their main premise computers being given access to nuclear arsenals, cause humans don't trust humans or humans don't act quick enough on command. But there lies the true story for me. It is the fact that in colossus/wargames/the terminator a computer program is given access to what it shouldn't. The enemy isn't the computer programs abilities. The enemy is the human hubris that gives computer's the access to power the computer should not have.
https://vimeo.com/584593423?fl=pl&fe=vl
1972 Silent Running
And the role of space exploration in preserving the earth. The myth is that once humanity figures out how to go outside earth and extract everything or use everything earth can be a paradise forgetting the inefficient human systems will get in the way.
https://ok.ru/video/5844487178779
1973 Soylent Green
I concur about resource based social structures. The fact that soylent green has no resistance movements is underrated. The percent of people who have knowledge is being reduced to a level where not enough people know anything to have movements. Most of the people with knowledge are old. And expensive computer systems are not around either. Computer games for the rich. Computer systems in manufacturing, developing soylent green exist but they are unable to do anything or interfere with anything of a grand design, because they are designed well.
https://archive.org/details/soylent-green-1973_20210310
1975 Rollerball
The role of sport in modernity. The key is the efficiency of human systems and how sport is one of the last and maybe only activity human beings enjoy that requires humans. humans enjoy watching humans fight to the death. In rollerball the AI is a computer trapped in a room with data. It isn't connected to nuclear weapons and in rollerball it seems people don't carry around computer systems of a certain level of advanced interaction. And yet, the corporations have specific machines for surveillance and more. The problem is of ideas. It isn't that humanity hasn't found a balance, it is that the balance through technology demands total control or adherence to a system of life.
1975 Death Race 2000
This is reality television's future. From "Big Brother" to "Naked and Afraid" to "Jackass the movie" to "Real Housewives" to "The Kardashian clan" Reality TV which is the most scripted, is designed to give viewers the distant pleasures of viewing, safe in that they are never hurt while active in that they participate in the action sequence. Death Race like Roller ball is a world where the system of business hasn't made poverty, but the human need to have more has been sated by an athletic competition designed to allow the closest to complete depravity.
https://youtu.be/-1SEgbolSF4?si=Y6oJKaLqAjXYweP3
1975 the stepford wives
As I typed, robotic bodies while electronic simulation systems are ever nearer. No laws exist to even remotely guide humans, especially males from desiring pseudo female slaves and the film correctly shows what happens to real women in a disadvantaged situation when men can replace them with someone perfect to their intentions. Not as nature intended. I argue the remake with the bioelectrical controlling chip misses the brutality of the original film. In the remake the women can be saved with a change in the circuit but in the original film, the women once truly replaced are killed to make way for the robotic woman.
https://youtu.be/UiqinUpRQgU?si=63Pxk3Sv4AA1czfn
1973 Westworld
Like Death race or Rollerball, Westworld is a world where poverty isn't the problem but entertainment gives humans the ability to not get involved in questioning the larger system. How is wealth distributed. As in rollerball or death race, we don't see what goes on in the poorer regions in humanity, which is the frightening reality of westworld, a playground for the haves while no consideration to the have nots who are clearly blockaded from all thought or media exposure.
https://youtu.be/PzlbMrpF7qA?si=RyFzDj0SJhkLjTtv
1978 The boys from Brazil
Genetic engineering requires environmental controls and to what lengths can the wealthy use to dictate who is born , what traits survive. What damage can be done to humanity by humanity when genetic engineering becomes feasible to humans most fantastical desires.
https://youtu.be/3UKWdOEEFMs?si=hnNQLTWduVeQ-kmT
1978 Coma
Organ harvesting is real. This is known in prisons or in poor countries. Coma shows this. The tragedy is how people don't want to face this, like soylent green. What if you need a human being to help you live, not to feed. The desperation to live by the rich has no bounds. Vampires.
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x9m08cm
1976 Network
Mad as hell. Audience likes dictate over quality. It isn't about guiding to betterment but selling any subject or content to profit. Nothing is sacred when anything can be sold.
https://youtu.be/A64rR5Dp07s?si=lHAKbcO42cgV4E4y
https://youtu.be/_RujOFCHsxo?si=Tom5kBIplsPI0cbF
1977 Capricorn One
The key is providing an illusion is more important than the truth. Like Network media dictates events and so controlling media is ever more important. Such that the efficiency of the system will slowly degrade to a point where no one will be ready.
https://youtu.be/fMJwIeXYE0g?si=-FZ_4QLDWmV9HZsc
1974 Dark Star
The corporatization of space travel. Will be a true wild west of the future. Not the myth of cowboys vs Indians, but the reality of people fighting each other , surviving the elements , while either are paving the way for the rich to remove both of them once the moon/mars or other outer areas are settled, just like the west.
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8tb80s
1976 Logan's Run
This is a dysfunctional plan of human preservation. Humanity outside the dome is dying, while humanity in the dome is in a loop. But the dome is dying. At some point no humanity will exist outside the dome and the loop inside the dome will die out in ignorance and impotency. In the original book, the rival to Logan 5 is a very old man kept young by cosmetic surgeries, who takes logan and "wife" to a ship where humanity actually exists off earth. Thus, Logan's run is really a test in the book to see who is truly ready to be free.
https://ok.ru/video/1820870576820
1977 The Island Dr. Moreau
Dr Moreau himself , a scientist who has placed himself far from human communities, while he is trying to do better than nature, with no thought to the community he creates. A lone human enters his private space and automatically creates chaos. Dr Moreau at heart wants to make a super race, a perfect race, as if anything made by humans can be perfect. Dr Moreau made his own tomb on an island nailed by the bodies of his inventions and didn't realize it was an inevitable failure that one drop of external human input destroyed.

Freaks 1932
It is a good film. Yes, it is insulting to midgets dwarves or various natural humans who do not have a common form. Yes, it is a revenge film. But what is wrong in any of it? The truth is, many humans do treat other humans as said midgets or others were treated in the film. Said treatment was and is not a lie. so, again, it is insensitive, but it isn't a lie and I find greater insult in the need for people to not see the truth in their negative actions. And also the truth in warranted revenge. Revenge is negative, but it is not eternally unwarranted. Sometimes revenge is earned by the cruelty of those who are revenged upon, ala white Europeans have earned revenge by indigenous peoples of the Americas, the first peoples often called native americans.
The funny thing about freaks is, in film, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein whom in literature is of a beautiful human form, is depicted as a "freak" while the creatures creator Frankenstein, in literature a obsessive infatuated egoist, is treated as a scientist of good will who made a mistake.
https://archive.org/details/freaks-1932-colorized-movie-720p-hd
Island of Lost Souls 1932
This film treats Moreau correctly. Moreau is a man of knowledge who has found him a place on earth where he can become god with his intellect. And of course, as moreau is only human the inevitable fall from his attempt at godhood occurs. Again, the white audience of that time, which accepted, the annihilation of black towns and experimenting on black people, didn't like to see its actions. Denial. why should films support denial ? People in modernity say they want to escape when they watch films. but that isn't my desire when i see a film. I like my life, i am merely peering into a world, I don't want to escape into it. The audience has been trained to want to escape because of the lies , the banning of films like island of lost souls supports.
The Sign of the Cross 1932
Films about history are always in the situation of the sign of the cross. I grew up in a home where history was taught with one tenet in mind, truth, not desire or want or convenience or ease. Truth. when some or many black people today suggest they don't want to see slavery to whites in a film, what are they really saying? they can't stomach the truth? or worse, they rather ignore or blockade the truth of an unquestioned majority of black people, ninety nine percent, for the truth of an unquestioned minority of black people, the one percent of black people living giddy or happy in some varying integration with whites. why? What pains black people today in the truth of the past? IS it that black people today know that while they live in the light of what the old minority wanted, they live in a way the old majority would had attacked, spit on, burned with all their souls.
When any populace in humanity can't face the violence from their forebears or the misery their forebears lived, they are weak.
https://ok.ru/video/746986867202
Scarface 1932
Still the best scarface for me. His sister in this film is completely brilliant. The most potent thing about scarface 1932 in comparison to the al pacino scarface is the historical honesty. Miami in the 1970s was never what scarface presented, but the mob violence in new York city or Chicago was what Muni's scarface displayed correctly. People in New York City talk about gang violence as if today is some grandiose, the greatest era of gang violence new York city had was mostly white Italian/irish/jewish and totally above control. But people from whites to non whites suggest modernity is some parallel example. It is a lie. I notice no one has ever showed the two scarfaces back to back , at least in recent memory
https://archive.org/details/scarface-1932_202109
Ecstacy 1933
I never saw this one, but a young hedy lamar. Prelolita lolita:) The lolita book is 1955 and the lolita film 1962 by stanley Kubrick are decades after estacy.
https://ok.ru/video/3554222213830
The Story of Temple Drake 1933
From Faulkner sanctuary, i never saw this one. This is the film that was used in the legal system for the censors. I need to view it.
Babyface 1933
Barbara Stanwyck can act. But beyond that, Babyface is again, truth. In modernity the real housewives show is a set of babyfaces? Bill gates and Jeff Bezos wives are babyfaces. Women use the skill in the bed chamber and in intimacy with men to get men to give to them and hope on a better ride if feasible. This is intimacy as a job, which is very common today. Babyface was at a time when women didn't have the opportunities today, to own a bank account or a house or even vote in a lot of scenarios.
https://ok.ru/video/283708426915
Tarzan and his mate 1934
his mate:) for me, Tarzan which was written as a mythos in literature for white European peoples enjoyment and ego against the black African or others in general, merely continued its literary role in film. why ban it?
Reefer madness 1936
This movie is a lovely truth on how nazi Germany isn't the only country that made propaganda, film for quick consumption while little thought
Marijuana 1936
Reefer madness part 2
The Outlaw 1943
This is one of the films targeted by the code, and the director responded by buying into the media hype making it more scandalous than it was. The problem with self righteousness in any art field is, it is never warranted.
https://youtu.be/I7T0tfieOf0?si=ykqFAeKRqa4my-Zu
Mom and Dad 1945
Nice idea, separate showing for men and women. That is ahead of the curve, still today , making variants of films for genders is not done or embraced. but i think it can be functional.
Song of the South 1946
haha!:) zipity do daa, ziptity yeah! really... ah boy, where do I begin. I think Disney should show song of the south before black panther all the time. It shows how film firms work. The Song of the south was to cater to the majority ticket buying audience which was mostly white and infatuated with happy negroes as underlings. Black Panther was to cater to a global audience where black ticket buyers have the money to carry a film on its own while non black ticket buyers are willing to pay to see a ninety nine percent black cast film. The key is who can buy tickets not respect or truth.
Never forget song of the south was a huge money maker for disney
Lost Boundaries 1949
After 1934 Imitation of life with real life yella or mulatta, who called herself black, Fredi Washington, and before Human stain 2003 or Free State of Jones 2016 or Passing 2021 there was Lost Boundaries. The funny thing about passing is how many whites were and still are fearful of the claim against black ancestry. White people have killed against that claim.

Dorian Gray
Oscar Wilde is known for his collections of short stories and essays as well as for his many stage plays, the most famous of which is The Importance of Being Ernest. However, Wilde did author one novel: the psychological thriller "The Picture of Dorian Gray" in 1890. Dorian is a wealthy young man of England who has an exquisite life-like portrait made by his dear friend Basil. The vain and narcissistic young Dorian hopes to be physically caught in the moment of his portraiture, wishing to live a life of pleasure without being touched by his hedonistic lifestyle. As the Dorian captured on canvas grows older and more decrepit while the living Dorian stays forever young, Basil fears his hard-living friend will not be able to atone for his ever growing list of sins. In an exuberant crescendo of negativity and rage, Dorian succumbs to the painting and is taken by the demons he once mocked.
Challenge
Your task is to write a tale inspired by Dorian Gray, one of the greatest monsters ever written. What if Basil was able to intervene in time to reverse Dorian's sins? What other actions sealed Dorian's fate that weren't included in the original story? What if Dorian sealed the painting away, never to look at it again; would he still be alive today? What if the painting version came to life to physically stalk Dorian? What would a modern day Dorian Gray be like?
From making an alternative world version, to adding unknown elements to the character, you are free to imagine this public domain character, however you want. So, will you paint a new picture of Dorian Gray?

Some key points. The original story was published as a novella in parts in a magazine. But the original novella had mention of unfiltered homosexual relations, like from Basil to Dorian, but also Dorian to Woton. Wilde was asked by his publisher to change it and Wilde did, though Wilde never suggested it was forced upon or censure. I think Wilde saw it as better writing. A year after the novella, the novel was made.

thank you
What made you decide to have the Yams buy it despite the weird vibes?
I think most new home owners are willing to tolerate negativity from one aspect of the home. the house looks immaculant, even if the painting of the house in the house does not.
is the underpainting meant to be the real subject all along?
No, as an artist and a student of art history i comprehend that art resources used to be expensive. a quality canvas wasn't something every artist had which is why many artist reused canvases making works painting on canvases cleaned off. Now in this case, the underpainting was painted over not cleaned off, but the magic went onto the image above

The light of the green area turns dark to complete black and then rapidly switches between white and black continuously. [ opposite of white is black and black is white] Candace is in shock wit the changes and looks down. Eshu walk toward and stops in front of Candace. Candace look up quick, frightened, but becomes enamored with Eshu , unable to look away. She repeats the dance she did before in the jungle except that where she faces the split between in front of behind Eshu is like a wall, while she is always focused on Eshu. After finishing one dance variant, she approaches Eshu with a sultry walk and touches his front, trying to embrace him, but she is unable to. And she kisses him, for a long time. Then she is pulled away[ to off stage] Her feet sliding on the ground. The variable black to white slows down to black and then black brightens back to jungle.

FOR THE October 2026 : European Renaissance Challenge in
LINK TO CHALLENGE
turn underline line sections below into inks to the challenge
Trecento and the First Phase European Renaissance
This phase of the European Renaissance is based on getting all elements in works of art to be as natural as possible: physical forms, color, light, or other. Models would be used to get human proportions correctly as well as testing the light , and how objects look in the light. The key to comprehending the first phase of the european renaissance is that all the artist are trying to push at least one artistic aspect to a more natural and intricate quality. Some try to push multiple artistic aspect, some only push one artistic aspect.
Yes, most had religious context, but for the European Renaissance challenge in Color-me-club you are not asked or demanded any religious thematics, the theme is free to the artist. The guides for submissions are all based on elements. I restate, You are free to do whatever theme you desire. You want aliens and robot killers, go for it. The following are different temporal or regional examples of the First Phase of the European Renaissance, all focusing on getting a natural look through the arts. Hopefully, the content below will inspire you to realize your artistic skill is already adequate to at least one oof the artist below, who are deemed masters. So, take a look at their artwork , see what you like to do, and create your lineart. I am willing to answer questions.
Sienese School
most of these works focus are perspectives.
Giovanni Di Paolo 1403–1482 has block colors or short ranges of a color. The physical forms are simple, not as defined. But heavy use of backgrounds and midgrounds and foregrounds and angles. Usually clear in color and detailed backgrounds and multiple individuals in the foreground.
An example is Madonna of humility, great details in the back, but little shadow and the human forms are less detailed.
Paolo's annunciation, note the difference with Beccafumi below.
Domenico Beccafumi 1486 – 1551 showed he was able to attack the natural goal better
the best example is his annunciation- unlike Paolo who has no shadows, he uses light more and has a more detailed form of human figures as well as nature.
Florentine Painting
artists in this region , adopted the holistic approach , getting light, form, color all correct.
Piero della Francesca 1415 1492 notice he lived the same time as Paolo and after you see the examples below you see he was trying to reach the holistic natural desire more.
The flagulation has characters of different height, shadows differing based on location, physical forms defined better
Sandro Botticelli 1445 1510 died before Beccafumi and yet you can see his approach to achieve more natural effects.
It like many of Botticelli's paintings don't have characters with extreme changes in height and this depth isn't challenged as much but the color and physical forms are well defined. TRIVIA I painted a variant of this in high school using acrylic
Michelangelo 1475 – 1564 who was a better sculptor and Leonardo da Vinci 1452 –1519 were both born and trained in Florence, though did most of their work in Italy in Rome. Raphael1483 – 1520 wasn't Florentine but learned in Florence, before he also moved to Rome. But I argue most of their well known work is the for the second phase of European Renaissance I call Mannerism.
Forlivese School of Art
many places in italy have regional variation , I have not listed them all, but I placed a few.
Melozzo 1438 – 1494 has few surviving work but the ones that exist show challenging perspective. Remember the first phase of the european renaissance goal is to show all aspects of the visual art in painting. Some tried it all, many focused on areas.
a great example is the following.
Cologne school
remember it is European Renaissance , not Italian Renaissance, different places have different influences or styles, partially based on the religious r fiscally wealthy community.
Meister des Marienlebens - An unknown artists whose is nicknamed today Meister des Marienlebens painted in the first phase
Meeting at the golden gate, you can see the perspective, form, the lighting is not natural , but you can see the holistic application. Note: this work doesn't have an official title.
Dutch and Flemish
The northern European artists, were heavily influenced by Bosch whose details in the background or in the scene was superior to art of the south usually, or Eyck whose perspective's were at time unused or seen in the south.
Hieronymus Bosch 1450 -- 1516 - an artist whose personality, influences or life story is barely known. His art is what he left, and like his identity it is specific. TRIVIA- as a kid I liked his style.
You can see the cloudy wet sky above the light, the figures in the difference and the cruuxificion in front, the colors are not complex but he creates a sense of extreme range. Because he is in the north of Europe, far from rome, the expression can be different.
Jan van Eyck 1390 – 144 alot of oil painting, oil allows colors that others at that time did not. He has some very famous paintings, Arnolfini and his wife.
You can see in his Annunciation a many aspects, depth, lighting, angles, details
Dieric Bouts 1415 – 1475 a leader in using vanishing points in perspective
I mention The Virgin and Child because of its theme. A bare breasted virgin mary is very rare in modern images but was , i argue common, and near majority popular in desire in the european renaissance artistic age. While in comparison in the 1900s, a woman showing her breast in artwork of the U.S.A. [films especially] is considered sluttish or some negativity.
Crete
An eastern European First phase style. Because of the popularity of the Hagia Sophia [ holy wisdom] alot of eastern artist show the influence of the illustrative style in said building.
Michael Damaskinos 1530/35–1592/93 -
Adoration of the king - the figures look like they can be on the wall of the hagia with their colors, but the scene composition and perspective is more complex.
IN CONCLUSION
I hope what you realize looking at the presented first phase European Renaissance works is what determines something as European Renaissance is wide, not narrow, in all aspects: themes/colors/perspectives. So when you create your lineart, don't worry about impressing or your artistic skill. The key to the European Renaissance is pushing your craft , not a destination. If you achieve that, then you have succeeded.
The Second Phase of the European Renaissance is from Mannerism era and other art movements about Europe that differed in one factor or another than from the goal of displaying all elements of art from the Trecento.

#BlackHistory337 - 8: Stageplays 10012026This event began 10/01/2026 and repeats every year forever

CONTENT
#BlackHistory337 is about the time outside the 28 days designated as Black History Month, an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of the Black community during the other 337 days of the year. Let's continue learning all year long, because history doesn't stop when February ends.
For this edition of #Black337 the focus is the stageplay. Now, any platform is a stage. From the elevated stages in Lincoln Center or the Metropolitan Opera , in downtown Manhattan, or in a high school's auditorium[place to hear] to a flat space aside a small town or a living room with the chairs or table cleared out. The stages are as old as the main halls of the pharaohs of yore or the fields where entertainers would perform dramas before kings or queens existed. And plays, come in all forms, from one person shows to musicals.
For the purpose of Black337 we will focus on Stageplays in the USA made by Black Americans whose forebears were enslaved or enslaved themselves.
One of the earliest stages for Black people in the United States of America is the African Grove Theatre[ 1820-1821] started by George A. Thompson jr. [located at 38 Thompson Street] In such a place, Thompson jr. wrote "King Shotoway". It is not available, or has been lost in time.
One of the people who saw plays at the African Grove Theatre was Ira Aldridge. (1807-1867) : first Black American honored by Haiti, King Frederick of Prussia honored him with the Prussian Gold Medal for Arts and Science.
https://www.nypl.org/events/tours/audio-guides/100-century-collections-community-and-creativity/item/19625
Alongside Ira Aldridge in Europe was Victor Sejour (1817 1874), arguably the French parallel. Sejour, author of the Mulatre, one of the earliest books published by a Black American, was born in New Orleans. Like Aldridge he fled the U.S.A. for Europe and was honored in Europe, a chevalier. The last thirty eight years of his life , Sejour wrote or acted in plays in Paris.

While Aldridge or Sejour fled the USA and its white populace for Europe, to gain the ability to lift their head. William Well Brown (1814-1884) born in Kentucky, escaped enslavement to whites after twenty years and lived in the U.S.A. He wrote a play "The Escape; or, A Leap for Freedom". I quote the beginning of the preface.
This play was written for my own amusement, and not with the remotest thought that it would ever be seen by the public eye. I read it privately, however, to a circle of my friends, and through them was invited to read it to a Literary Society. Since then, the drama has been given in various parts of the country.
And I quote the end of the preface.
The play, no doubt, abounds in defects, but as I was born in slavery, and never had a day's schooling in my life, I owe the public no apology for errors
Internet Archive with a photocopied version of Black Theatre USA. The link goes ot page 37 where, The Escape, begins.
https://archive.org/details/blacktheatreusar00/page/37/mode/2up
In the year 1865 , the War Between the States ended in the USA. At the end of said war over ninety percent of Black people in the United States of America were illiterate because of the anti-literacy positions by whites who owned blacks. Around the year 1910, two thirds of the Black populace in the USA could read while ninety five percent of the Black populace in the USA in the time frame had no financial support or opportunity or allowance while citizens of the USA.
In the light of that environment, as a contrast, musical comedy's thrived. Acts like the Hyers Sisters Combination produced Urlina, the African Princess. Sam Lucas, the black minstrel, with Sam Jack, white theater owner, created the very successful "The Creole Burlesque Show" . Egbert Williams (1876 - 1921) and George Walker (1872-1911) created a comedy show that used various Black entertainers to highlight their skills. Williams and Walker worked with: writer Jesse Shipp, composer Will Cook, lyricist Paul Dunbar. [ husband of writer Alice Dunbar Nelson, who is a great short story muse for me] created "In Dahomey, a Negro Musical Comedy"(1902); the play was performed in front of the royal family of England, and had a four year run in the United States.
Poster for the London premiere of "In Dahomey at the Shaftesbury Theatre, 1903. The poster features the famous cake walk with Bert Williams, acclaimed comedian, at the top of the cake.
George Walker, Adah Overton Walker, and Bert Williams link arms and dance the cakewalk in the first Broadway musical to be written and performed by African Americans, "In Dahomey."
But one of the most vital stageplay forms in the late 1800s or early 1900s is Pageants. No not beauty pageants but stage pageants. Usually they reenact historical events with narration , costumes , dancing , music. The Wizard of Oz was made into a bawdy play that essentially was a pageant. W.E.B. Dubois(1868-1963), yes a founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, made a pageant called the "Star of Ethiopia" (1913), seen by tens of thousands, prepared by several thousand(for example 200 singers in the chorus).

Three years after the Star of Ethiopia , Angelina Weld Grimke(1880-1958) wrote Rachel (1916). The earliest complete drama for the stage written by a black women in the United States of America.
The first modern production of Rachel was in 1990 at Spelman college.

In 1921 Shuffle Along was produced. The book is from F.E. Miller plus Aubrey Lyles. The music is from Eubie Blake. The lyrics are from Noble Sissle. It ran for 504 shows. It was the earliest broadway work for Josephine Baker(Would move to France and become an icon of film and stage), Paul Robeson(legendary lawyer/singer/athlete/shakesperean actor/made famous Showboat), Fredi Washington (the first peola [of "immitation of life"] in film), Florence Mills (legendary performer who died young), Adelaide Hall (was a great jazz entertainer and did the same as Josephine Baker). Looking at the history of these early works you can see how multiform or imaginative while commenting Black Stageplay productions were in the past, even if the environment was a challenge.
I used the book "Black Theatre USA", "The Early Period 1847-1938" from James V. Hatch plus Ted Shine as a reference for most of the information stated. The images come from Wikipedia.
