Protractor[ half circle shape with one hundred and eighty degrees, needs the origin hole, it is midway of the baseline ]
straight ruler
pen
colored pencils
string
coin
tape
sewing measuring tape
CRAFT INSTRUCTIONS
Color the cardboard, the background color
Place the protractor on the cardboard
Hold the protractor in place with your hand on the cardboard.
Use the pencil to draw the outline of half the protractor [Don't move the protractor when finished]
start as the ninety degree mark on the scale, the scale is where the angles are present
draw towards the zero degree mark on the scale till you reach the straight edge of the protractor [ OPTIONAL some protractors straight edge is at the baseline, the straight line from the zero degree to the one hundred and eighty degree ]
draw up along the straight edge to the origin [the origin is the midway point of the baseline, some protractors don't have the baseline as the straight edge of the protractor, and have the straight edge some distance to be a ruler, so best guess]
Use the pencil and note the angles from ninety to zero [you don't have to do every single angle, it can just be 90,85,80,... to 15,10,5,0 ]
Use the pencil to make the origin hole
Remove the protractor from the cardboard
Use the ruler to make a straight line from the ninety degree mark to the origin point
color inside some graphic, like the sun or a tree
mark the degrees on the inside of the quarter circle
cut out the figure
make an indent where the origin point is
cut a long piece of string [three feet is ok but I used five]
tie string about coin
use tape to connect coin to string
USING THE CRAFT
Get DISTANCE, Find out the height from the ground to your eye [ i used a measuring tape, but you can use a straight ruler, [ Note: you can get help from another to make this better]
Get EYEHEIGHT, Whatever you want the height from mark the distance from where it meets the ground to where you will stand[ note: same as above, get help if need be]
Get ANGLE,
using your simple clinometer, stand the distance from the object
hang the weight using the string at the indent of the origin, try to place it at your eye height and when you look forward you see the indent straight aheas, make it as level as possible. The string should point downward at zero degrees.
keeping the ninety degree at your eye turn upward till you are looking at the top of whatever you want to measure and record the angle [where the string dangles, at your eye straight up is ninety degree and straight forward is zero degrees]
Get APPROXHEIGHT , Use the following algorithm, EYEHEIGHT+(DISTANCE*Tan(90-ANGLE)) , use a calculator
