ProfD Posted June 16, 2024 Report Posted June 16, 2024 Yesterday, brotha Tariq Nasheed hosted the Rally4Reparations at Freedom Plaza here in Washington, DC. The guest speakers were Dr. Ma'at, Afro Elite, Dr. Randy Short, Gregg Marcel Dixon, Vicki Dillard, Dave Anderson, Black Alpha and Rizza Islam. All of the speakers were on point. Big Daddy Kane rocked the crowd on the Hip-Hop tip. The event was well attended despite that it was hot outside. It was great to see families and so many young people out there too. I know it's a heavy lift but I hope that FBA/ADOS folks will keep pushing for reparations. 2 1

What!? I wish I could have been there. I never heard about it! Where is this 'Freedom Plaza'? I will look that up.
Pioneer1 Posted July 27, 2024 Report Posted July 27, 2024 ProfD My brutha, I forgot that you were in the D.C. area. Well, since you live in D.C. you might want to drop by and check on our elder Neely Fuller Jr. from time to time....LOL. I haven't checked out his broadcast in months, I hope he's still doing fine at 90 something years old. Did you attend Tariq's event? If so, what did our sista Vicki Dillard look like upfront and in person? I know she has health issues, but that's a cute little sista.....with her loud mouth self, LOL.

Sista Dillard looks fine once you look past that big azz hat, er, weave she wears. 1
Pioneer1 Posted July 28, 2024 Report Posted July 28, 2024 I'm not quite sure what our brother hopes to achieve by holding these yearly "Rally For Reparations" events. These events are good to have someplace to go and socialize, but they're not going to sway too many people on one side or the other. Everybody who is against us receiving Reparations will STILL likely be against it no matter how many rallies he holds. If he's doing it to get the attention of politicians....they already know about our desire for Reparations. This isn't telling them anything new.

While most Black folks see reparations as a pipe dream if they even think about it all, someone has to champion the platform. If folks like Tariq Nasheed and others stop talking about reparations to include organizing events around it, the issue will definitely die on the vine. Remember that a whole lot of AfroAmericans didn't get involved or think the civil rights movement would amount to anything. It didn't stop them from enjoying benefits of the struggle.

We need to keep Reparations front and center in our political agenda as a people, however it's HOW you promote and push for it that I take issue with. Similar to how you and I criticize the effectiveness (or lack there of) of marching around in circles, blocking traffic, and shouting at cars driving by in dealing with violence against our community from race soldiers....similarly, we should question the effectiveness of having pep rallies and slam poetry contests to "get the word out" about our demand for Reparations. We need to be going directly to politicians both in office and about to be in office and challenging THEM to push our agenda. Holding a rally or bar-b-que where homeless people can come by and munch on a hot dog or two ain't gonna get you a damn thing except a BILL from the city. "Rally for Repa-WHO???? When he git killed? Did he used to live down in Souf'eest???

Behind the scenes,"Tariq, Rizza Islam, Vicki Dillard and Marcel Dixon to name a few are also talking to politicians as well. At the rally, they were encouraging others to do the same thing in their communities too. Didn't see any homeless folks at the Rally4Reparations.
Pioneer1 Posted August 4, 2024 Report Posted August 4, 2024 We also need to have more clear cut definitions about WHO is FBA and WHO qualifies for Reparations. I've heard people call Roland Martin an "immigrant" though he was born right here in the United States. Perhaps his parents may have migrated, not sure...but he's a Black American. I've heard people say that the ONLY Black people who deserve Reparations are the FBA, not anyone descended from Caribbeans or Africans. But at the same time people are divided on THAT. I've heard them say that if you have atleast one parent who is FBA...you qualify. I've heard others say BOTH parents have to be FBA to qualify. Others are asking AfroAmericans if they have ANY immigrant ancestry in their background, if they do...they're no longer FBA. But those same AfroAmericans accept HALF WHITE folks as FBA as long as one parent is FBA. Crazy, man. There needs to be more clarity before those checks are cut.
ProfD Posted August 4, 2024 Author Report Posted August 4, 2024 Back in the 1800s, the Freedmen's Bureau was a US government agency. It was run by black folks. Right now, there is still a Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). It is an agency within Department of Interior. BIA is headed by folks of Native Indians descent. Establishing a similar agency run by AfroAmericans would manage reparations. They would be responsible for identifying FBA through genealogy, allocating resources to institutions and cutting checks to individuals. The main hurdles to reparations start with Black folks who 1) don't believe we deserve it, 2) don't believe it can happen and 3) fail to codify what reparations should entail.
