Shahrazad Ali (born April 27, 1954) is an author and social commentator, best known for her provocative views on gender roles within the Black community. She gained significant attention with her 1989 book, The Blackman’s Guide to Understanding the Blackwoman, which stirred controversy due to its content, which some perceived as reinforcing patriarchal ideas. This book became both popular and polarizing, especially in Black communities, sparking discussions on talk shows such as Donahue and The Sally Jessy Raphael Show.
Throughout her career, Ali has published several other books, including How Not to Eat Pork (Or Life Without the Pig) (1985), The Blackwoman’s Guide to Understanding the Blackman (1992), and How to Tell if Your Man is Gay or Bisexual (2003). In these works, she addresses issues such as dietary practices, relationships, and survival tactics. Her writing often emphasizes the need for self-sufficiency and resilience within the Black community, as well as the importance of traditional roles and values.
Ali has continued to appear in media over the years, including in the documentary series Hidden Colors, where she shares her perspectives on systemic racism, the legacy of slavery, and Black identity. Her ideas remain influential, especially among those who are interested in Afrocentric viewpoints on societal issues.
