I had the pleasure of attending the Mississippi Book Festival, which is held each August in the state's largest city, Jackson. I was able to see a wide variety of interesting authors including Jon Meacham, Rick Bragg, and the author of one of my favorite books, Cold Mountain, Charles Frazier. Jackson is a city that is over 80% Black, so I expected to see a significant number of Black authors. While the number of Black authors showcased were in the minority numerically; there were plenty in attendance. I saw writers like; children's book author and actress, Quvenzhané Wallis; social justice activist, Janet Dewart Bell; former Editor in Chief of the NAACP’s flagship publication, The Crisis, Jabari Asim; and Jackson native and #1 New York Times Bestseller author, Angie Thomas. I even had dinner with award winning children’s book author and illustrator Don Tate. Indie authors were well represented too, and I captured video of a few including, K. Reshay and Regena Hoye. Given the number and variety of Black authors present, I was really surprised by the lack of Black attendees. If anyone can explain why this would be the case, I'm all ears, or eyes as is the case here.

Christopher you'll need to provided more information about why you are looking for Black authors from these areas. A website would be helpful. Otherwise I'll need to remove this post. I'll give you a few days. While AALBC assumes can not assume responsibility for information posted here I do provide some vetting. I'm sure you understand.

FLORIDA RED TIDE UPDATE~ THE MOSES PLAGUE #1
Troy replied to Chevdove's topic in Culture, Race & Economy
My governor leaves a lot to be desired, but he is characteristic of a much larger problem with politic in the country. Red tide is a serious problem. But this is nothing compared to what is in store for this world. That said the articles are alarmist especially the way they have been presented here. I read one of the articles, if gives the impression that Red tide has hit Fort Desoto beach (it has not, but it is nearby), which is one of my favorite beaches. One of the reasons I like it so much is that I can go there and be the only person there. That is just the way the beach is there are no bars or hotels, you have to pay a toll to get there and $5 to park to a lot of locals go to other beaches where there is more action. The water is also full of fish, which some people don't like. The fact that the beach is empty comes as no surprise to me. But the article does not say this, rather it will have you infer that red tide has sacred people away; where the reality is that it is just the dearth of bars. Aerial photos of Ft. Desoto Beach in St. Petersburg shows an empty beach and discolored water however no dead fish was spotted from the air. LUIS SANTANA | Times -
Astrological Prediction the end of Trump's Presidency
Troy replied to Delano's topic in Culture, Race & Economy
No I'm not absolutely sure. I would not bet my life on it, but I sure will bet 50 bucks. Thanks for the donation -
@Chevdove Many leaders with the charisma to attract a followers should not be leaders. The scandalous leaders in the Black church, That @harry brown often laments, the catholic church leadership (for obvious reasons), as well as the current leader of the free world are prime examples. The best leaders have the are usually put in the positions, they did not seek it. In other words, they are seeking to make a positive charge and leadership was thrust upon them. Our culture rewards people with the willingness to do anything for power. Cardi B and Minaj my beat each other in pubic but they top the charts and are world famous.

I'll correct you again @Delano; I posted the link to the complete CDC chart before you posted the small portion that would substantiate your argument. You may review the post yourself. Now you may have found it independently but I posted it first (this also tells me you are not reading my replies carefully -- or at all) : Sure if you want to reach back 100 years to find an exception to reject the general case, be my guest and continue believe what you want. But your belief alsos require you to reject the overwhelming evidence to counter your belief, like the things I just mentioned that wealth confers on to people regardless of race like; leisure time, health care, education, lower crime, lower incarceration, longer life spans, financial security, and on... Your ability to reject overwhelming evidence in favor of a personal belief is textbook. It is fascinating that even the knowledge of this mental process will not get you to change your belief. I now understand completely why you will continue to be a climate denier.

Astrological Prediction the end of Trump's Presidency
Troy replied to Delano's topic in Culture, Race & Economy
@Kalexander2, using history as a guide, from the time the House of Representatives announced it would begin an impeachment inquiry in October 1998, to the moment President Clinton was found not guilty by during his trial before the Senate in February 1999 5 months transpired. From the date of Andrew Johnson impeachment February 24, 1868 to his acquittal it took over three months. This ignores the time it took to initiate the impeachment. Obviously a republican run house will not initiate impeachment proceeding, certainly not until the is an actual indictment (which will probably not come down until after the midterms). Since the republicans have the largest majority in congress in 80 years, it is not a certainty that either house will flip democratic. This hubris, naivety really, is what got 45 into office and may keep him there. Again, assuming there is an indictment the process for impeaching and conviction not be completed -- even if it started today -- by the end of the year. You understand that right @Kalexander2? Of course 45 can pull a Nixon and resign, but that will not happen before the end of the year either. Also keep in mind those good ole boys don't work over the Xmas holidays so December is basically shot. Both an understanding of history and common sense should tell you that 45 will be around until at least the end of the year. Now @Delano is making an astrological prediction which is another ball of wax, where reason, history, and facts are not a factor, so as he says we'll have to "wait and see." -
Candace getting an agent can be as hard as getting a book deal. There are suggestions posted above, you can also look at the acknowledgements in books similar to yours and see if the thanks there agent and reach out to that person. Has you book been professionally edited yet? You want to present your best possible book when securing an agent. To estimate printing cost For a 5.5x8.5 size book, you have approximately 300 words per page. 109K words would be about 368 page for finished book. Which if you printed 200 copies with me that would cost you $5.90 per book. You may use my printing calculator here. I'll assume the book is unedited. An edited version would be shorter -- probably a lot shorter. This would of course make your printing and shipping cost lower. We provide editing services here. Of course you can skip the agent step and independently publish your book. If you have the demand you suggest this may be the way to go especially if you want to proceed more quickly. If you generate a lot of sales you next book could be published through a publishing company. Good luck.

@Delano they still have cotillions, it is just not for poor people. I did not attend one. @Pioneer1, I'm not surprised I did not hear about it. If you think about how information like a cardio and nicki manaj brawl is disseminated, you'll understand how might have missed it. The other benefit of the Nation is that you are not excluded if you are poor and uneducated. But I agree you have to contend with their religion...

Thank you. Thanks for making this clear. I know where the chart is from, I was the one who provided it. At the end of the day class and wealth confer benefits on people that far exceed the benefit of race. People of all races with money have leisure time, health care, education, less likely to be catch a stray, or be locked up that a poor person. Again, wealth trumps race.

Astrological Prediction the end of Trump's Presidency
Troy replied to Delano's topic in Culture, Race & Economy
Have I EVER given you guys the impression that 45 was innocent of impeachable offenses... I'll wait.... of course not. With a Republican house and Senate, both impeaching the president, and removing him from office will not happen in 3 months. Neither of you can tell me how this can possibly happen in the time frame you predicted. -
Astrological Prediction the end of Trump's Presidency
Troy replied to Delano's topic in Culture, Race & Economy
@Kalexander2, another Delano tactic. I've previous asked you both to explain the steps that would need taken to justify your belief that a sitting president could be removed, for the 1st time in history, in little more than 3 months. You both have refused to do this, and now you are demanding that I do it -- something you've failed to do yourself. Why is your shooting from the hip with an empty gun any better than me? -
Because of statement like this This statement is not supported by the data. Is my statement true or false @Delano? No I can't I can only devine your position, based upon your statements since you have an annoying habit of refusing to answer direct questions.

The statements are consistent with each other and with how I feel. Again I did not write 45 will be reelected I wrote he may be reelected. There is a difference. -
Yes, there is a difference. Who really care what a zoologist or geneticist think about climate change? Do you know what percentage of climatologists believe in man made climate change?

Astrological Prediction the end of Trump's Presidency

The quote @Delano found is more accurate reflection of my sentiment. Of course if there is indeed a blue wave as a result of he midterms that will effect the odds. -
Interesting, I could see whether you might feel Black people are ignorant or stupid, but I think this is more a consequence of centuries of racism. I hope none of the incidents you are not judging Black people on is not based upon the Cardi v.s. Nicki fight

Del, it does not break down the death rate by income. That information is missing --- OBVIOUSLY! I was trying to help you understand that if the information were there, that it might reveal that wealthy Black men are murdered at a lower rate that poor ones. One would think this is common sense, but you are so determined to make a point you are being unreasonable. All I'm saying is that I'd rather be wealthy and Black in American, than poor and white. You clearly disagree and nothing you've written has convinced me otherwise Have you bothered to look at the death by homicide rates for you white men?

Yeah, the fact that weather in some locations have been colder in recent years is used by climate deniers to "prove" that global warming is not occuring, or if it is, it is not man made. The reality is weather in any location is not the synonymous as planetary climate change. Because they can't make the distinction they believe a spreadsheet with the temperature in Central Park for the last 100 years are sufficient evidence to deny climate change. As far as 97% of scientist (or all scientist) I don't know the number. What is the percentage of just climate scientists @Delano, 99.99%?

Honestly man, the ribbing was intended for @Delano I was just using you to get to him Really? Show me the quote, in context, because I don't hold the sentiment and don't recall writing such an unqualified statement like. -
The White Man Who Invented DNA Was Fund Dead
Troy replied to Troy's topic in Culture, Race & Economy
@Pioneer1 True. In NYC my parents generation could afford to buy a home, without a college education and on one income. My kids generation can have a college education and barely have earn enough money to rent a small apartment with a roommate while burdened with students loans. -
@Pioneer1 did Cardi B and Minaj get into a physical brawl? Again, the celebrity beefs are a completely different animal. The rise of social media not only instigates the beefs it ensures everyone is made aware of it. Sure a good code would be to prohibit Black women (and men) from fighting each other. My understanding is that the Nation of Islam has "codes" and they police their own. You don't see any women in the Nation brawling in the streets. They all carry themselves with grace and class. Have you considered joining the Nation?
-
@Pioneer1, yes this is human nature and is what the study is trying to understand. The takeaway is that we can't be afraid to revise your our beliefs. Yeah once emotions are involved anything is possible. Some people think changing their beliefs -- despite new, better, or more information, is a sign of weakness. Others just don't have the energy to learn a new tricks and are content with the world view they currently have -- no matter how false it is. They embrace supporting information and reject contradictory information no matter how overwhelming it may be and the result is climate deniers, 45 supporters, flat earthers, and @Delano

What?! Are you high? The chart clearly shows that, but that is not what you wrote. You obviously will not admit you were wrong lets move on. LOL! Man, all jokes aside I can;t tell you how many Black women I've been seeing with Black hair lately. But here is the kicker, I'm in a group talking about a festival to take place in an African country and one of the topics a sister from Africa proposed was to deal with skin lightening an European hair. I did not chime in on that one I put the greatest generation in quotes because that is what the generation is called. I don't know whose generation was greater. I just know ours is very easily manipulated and the benefits that previous generations enjoyed this generation will never know --- but this generation has been duped into believing have it so good because they have a cell phone with Instagram on it!
