"Black Wall Street" Tulsa Oklahoma
Milton you are absolutely correct; "we have work to do", and lot of it. We actually have more work than we did just 5 years ago. They are many individual success stories and I hope you are one of them, but collectively... we have a tough road ahead. Speaking about the NY Times Best Sellers list there are efforts underway to re-introduce one out own. When I got started there as a list managed by Faye Childs called the Blackboard African American Bestsellers list. The list was eventually picked up by, then taken over by Essence Magazine, and eventually dropped. I think a new best sellers list will help reinvigorate Black Books. Stay Tuned!

Milton I just want to elaborate on your statement "...if you present a product on a competitive level to any business, black people will happily spend their money with you. However, you have to be competitive. We like good stuff, too." Of course your statement is perfectly rational and logical. But most people are not entirely rational when it comes to making purchases. Believing this will get you into trouble People (not just Black people) make purchasing decisions for reasons that often have nothing to do with the relative quality of the product being consumed. I can give numerous examples of people paying a premium for a lower quality products. I'm sure, if you thought about it, you could come up with you own examples. Why people make these irrational decisions has been studied and one can read all about it. When you talk about Black people and Black products that adds a more complex dimension. Consider a Black school, a neighborhood, or a restaurant, some Black people will choose Black options over all else out of racial pride or a desire to "keep the money in the community". Other Black people would not live in a Black neighborhood if you paid them -- regardless of relative quality. Books are a whole 'nother world. There are manuscripts written by Black people, which can't get published, but are "better" than books currently on the NY Times Bestsellers list. Even if those books were published they, unfortunately, would probably not likely make that best sellers list. As it is hard to be competitive in today's marketplace dominated by huge "greedy grabbing" corporations. What makes a book "competitive" is not just the quality of the book itself. The book has to be marketed, promoted and supported otherwise it will not sell very well. There are manuscripts written by Black people that can't get a publishing deal, but are better than books currently on the NY Times best Sellers list. In order for more Black books to be competitive we need an infrastructure to support them. I'm afraid we don't really have this for Black fiction. There a few awards, few places to get reviews, few magazines, few websites, few stores available to make a book competitive. The "competitive" books are the books with the largest audience and with the most promotion. With a few exceptions "quality" has little to do with competitiveness in today's world. Of course I'm trying to change this with ABLE, AALBC.com, Huria, etc. It is an uphill battle but if books like yours are going to enjoy a large readership we have to build upon the current infrastructure.

BLACK CHRISTIANS NEWS FOR YOU.
Yeah Cynique that verse seems to rule out most of humanity. I thought "greedy grasper" an interesting thing to isolate as a condition for damnation; so I looked it up thinking it must be a far more egregious action than the term seems to imply. Definition of greedy grasper from the Urban Dictionary Person in pot rotation that keeps trying to grab the bong and/or blunt. Some examples : Tom: Hey man! You wanna call Jack and see if he wants to smoke? Bill: No way! That guy is totally a greedy grasper! I HATE people like that. Greedy Grasper should have been 1st on the list! Waterstar, the US so hypocritical in word relative to deed; it is too absurd, and damaging to be funny.

"Black Wall Street" Tulsa Oklahoma
I'll be watched both of these tonight -- thanks for scheduling my nightly TV view the last two nights :-) If you read the comments in the Washington Post article you learn that many people admitted to never hearing about the genocide in Tulsa -- folks who are presumably educated and from Tulsa. A film about Rosewood, starring Ving Rhames as made sometime ago. I honestly can't remember if I ever saw it.

"Make it Plain" PBS Documentary
I watched this last night. it was good. I've seen clips of this before, but never the program in its entirety. Many of the people interviews have passed away. Was that a ukelele that Farrakhan was playing? If was sad to see Malcolm's biological brothers turn on him... It would be nice if someone would tell the rest of the story over the last 50 years. I think it would be even more telling. Are there any serious, well done, documentaries covering Black folks nowadays? If you find any please share them. Sonia Sanchez was cute :-) I encourage you all to use the social icons below to share this video ad Waterstar suggests.

BLACK CHRISTIANS NEWS FOR YOU.
Revelation, do you believe society would be better off it the Christian Church and state were not separate? If so why, and if not, why not? Do you not know that the unrighteous and the wrongdoers will not inherit or have any share in the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived (misled): neither the impure and immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor those who participate in homosexuality, Nor cheats (swindlers and thieves), nor greedy graspers, nor drunkards, nor foulmouthed revilers and slanderers, nor extortioners and robbers will inherit or have any share in the kingdom of God. --1 Cor. 6:9,10 AMP.

A Black, Gay, Christian Dwarf chronicles his life’s journey
The interviewer in the video below asks, "Which is more courageous coming out as a Christian or homosexual". The question was posed tongue in check but... Clay Rivers invites your review of his latest work chronicling his life’s journey. In a world that associates stature, physical perfection, and race with a person's value, "Walking Tall" is about harnessing the power of self-worth as experienced by an African American, gay, Christian man who also just happens to be a dwarf. His career as an actor, artist, stage performer and author took Clay to Disney’s Main Street USA, Hollywood and the stages of New York City. A graduate of Jones High School and Rollins College, Clay offers a message to your audience on accepting yourself and accepting others. His is an especially poignant message for people of all ages, color and height in today’s world. From early lessons in the deep south to escapades as Donald Duck at Walt Disney World to the cat and mouse games on his psychologist’s couch, and finally to the finish line of accepting and loving himself, "Walking Tall" is brisk reading, full of charm and a devilish sense of humor. For anyone who has ever felt the slightest bit uncomfortable in their own skin has been afraid to wrestle personal demons or may have missed the directional signs while walking their own road less travelled, "Walking Tall" is a globe-trotting journey to self-acceptance. I’ve attached a pdf copy of the book and we can provide a hard copy upon request. Also, if you have additional questions, Clay can be available to talk on short notice. Check out Clay’s recent appearance on The Daily Buzz around the launch of his book. Waterstar, did you read a gentleman who recently passed at the age of 109, was an 18 year old survivor of the riots! Can you image? Here is the article from the Washington Post Otis G. Clark, who survived the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot, died May 21 at age 109. (BRANDI SIMONS/ASSOCIATED PRESS)

Black readers and Science Fiction/Fantasy: Do you read it?
Cynique, you may be interested to to know that I've begun to work very closely with Amari under the Aegis of ABLE (the Alliance for Black Literature and Entertainment). In fact I'm glad to read Milton's introducing his work here is a direct result of Amari's influence. ABLE is in it's infancy, but the prospects and promise for it are very encouraging.

Braver Deeds -- The story of an African-American cavalryman
JVR, I must say not only does your book look interesting, you've also done a terrific job of using this forum to get the word out about your book in both a professional, informative a manner. I wish more authors would do the same thing -- best of all it did not cost you a penny to get noticed by over 1,000 unique people. You video was well done too. If you would like to spend a little money I would suggest you take advantage of this service: http://videobookpromo.com/ I'd be willing to give you a substantial discount across all platforms if you are interested just drop me a line troy@aalbc.com I also noticed that you do not use an Amazon affiliate code or a short link. Here is a better link for you: http://bit.ly/braverdeeds I find these shorter links useful for use on places like Twitter. Plus these link uses an AALBC.com affiliate code which means sales count toward our Bestsellers list which is one of the most popular pages.

ROBERT CHAMPION KILLED BY HAZING
Milton that last statement is actually alarming. I know it was a long time ago, but students leaving a school because of hazing is crazy. I posted this video here before. I shot it shortly before Robert was killed. I've seen a number of marching bands in my day, but FAMU's is so much better than any I've ever seen: It is very Likely Robert Champion is performing here: [media=]

AALBC.com Interview with President Jimmy Carter
AALBC.com Interview with President Jimmy Carter Hey Cynique Kam asked your question. I trust too much did not get loss in translation In 2002, President Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development." The author of 25 books, here, he talks about his latest, NIV Lessons from Life Bible.

THE BLACK CHURCH NOT SUPPORTING PRESIDENT OBAMA.
Waterstar, well thank God for bookstore and libraries. Cynique, all this time I thought Merriam was some bespectacled, spinster feverishly keeping up with our rapidly evolving language. Speaking of keeping up with language. There is a guy I do a lot of work with. In many way we business partners. Sometime I have to catch myself when I introduce him as my "partner". That was was redefined as well.
-
THE BLACK CHURCH NOT SUPPORTING PRESIDENT OBAMA.
Well Cynique, While I disagreed with your regarding Obama 4 years ago. I was all for voting for him because he was Black (was there really any other criteria upon which to make a really determination of his ability?) This time around I tend to agree with most of your positions regarding this year's election. Whether expressed or not the Black electorate will demonstrate its agreement as well. Waterstar/Cynique help me out the double entendre was lost on me? Remember, I went to public school.

PBS show "Open Mind": Race Relations In Crisis
I watched the first program last night. They don't have programming like this any more, do they? It was fascinating hearing James Farmer and Malcolm X debate. After listening to Farmer I also have a better appreciation for the birth of Affirmative action I also really enjoyed seeing Farmer and Wyatt Tee Walker revisit the interview 30 years later. They both recognized that they did in fact get rid of Jim Crow but were both overly optimistic about the rest of the required gains. I bet y'all did not know that Mosque #7 which Malcolm X ran and Canaan Baptist Church of Christ where Wyatt Tee Walker ministered for many years are on the same street literally a few doors from each other. I passed by Mosque #7 every Sunday on my way to Canaan most Sundays, where I was baptized by Wyatt Tee Walker about 40 years ago. What the US did to the Black Panthers was criminal. I'll check the 2nd video later.
