  3. Read about a real life "DJango" in David S. Cecelski's new book "The Fire of Freedom: Abraham Galloway and the Slaves' Civil War" I have to admit, I never heard of Galloway prior to posting the review of the book about his life. How many more figures from American history would be just as, or even more, inspiring? So much energy has gone into a debates over fictional characters like Django, fueled by a tweet, and regurgitated by our so called "news" sources that actual people like Galloway go virtually unknown... Happy Black History Month.
  4. THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CHILDREN’S BOOK FAIR The 21st Annual African American Children's Book Fair will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2013, 1:00-3:00PM, Community College of Philadelphia, 17th Spring Garden Street, Philadelphia, PA. The event is free and opened to the public. The Book Fair started out on a cold frosty day at John Wanamaker Department Store. Sounds like the beginning of a novel. But today is it one of the oldest and largest single day events for African American Children's Books in the region. On average over 3,500 people attend the event each year. With a reported double digit illiteracy rate in the region, our success is due to the fact that we offer the best and the brightest from the multi-cultural literary community; books that enlighten enrich and empower the young citizens in our community. Parents, caregivers, and educators from the tri-state area are very supportive of the event because they understand that children who read make more responsible decisions about their lifestyles. Over 21 nationally known bestselling authors/illustrators will participate. Many have won the American Library Association Coretta Scott King award. Confirmed participants are James Ransome, Lesa Cline-Ransome, Margaree King Mitchell, Deborah Gregory, Jabari Asim, Glennette Tilly Turner, Eric Velasquez, Shadra Strickland, Elizabeth Zunon, Marilyn Nelson, Floyd Cooper, Regina Brooks, Alice Randall, Caroline Randall Williams, David Miller, Renee Watson and Jerry Craft. These authors/illustrators have written some of the best books of our generation. The afternoon is packed with activities that promote the power and joy of reading. Authors and illustrators will make presentations from their books. The Literary Row distributes book related promotional materials free of charges. Our Educator’s book-giveaway distributes brand new books to teachers and librarian to use in their classrooms. 6. MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE MUSIC “In the end, I am saved by the music. I have no idea what twist or turn the rollercoaster that is my life will take. I am saved by God’s gift of love. If through my words and music I can pass on that gift to the readers, I am the happiest man on earth.” — R. Kelly Beyond the chart-topping hits and the controversial headlines, in Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me, Robert Sylvester Kelly lays bare the true life story of a complex soul and a musical genius. With searing honesty, he delivers a fascinating portrait of a gifted soul trapped in the conflicting realities “Bump N' Grind” sexuality and soul-stirring “I Believe I Can Fly” spirit. Kelly’s spectacular rise from street performer to superstar who has sold more than 35 million records worldwide is chronicled in his most intimate and revealing project to date. This memoir written in three acts, employs the same dramatic plot twists and turns that mesmerized fans of Kelly’s hip-hopera Trapped in the Closet. The beautifully designed volume includes more than 130 color photographs that offer a truly dimensional portrait of Robert Kelly, the mama’s boy, the brother, the artist, the father, and most of all, Robert the man. “… a vivid and entertaining journey that reveals much about the musical engine of a true artist.” — Jesse Washington, Associated Press __________________________________ AVAILABLE NOW! 11. Rick Stevens Ascot Media Group Post Office Box 133032 The Woodlands, TX 77393 Office: (281) 333-3507 pr@ascotmediagroup.com www.ascotmediagroup.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE A Captivating Tale of an Unlikely Friendship Del Mar, CA – February 24, 2012 – Growing up in the tumultuous racial tension of the South in the 1960s, there was a secret in Betty Ann Hoehn's home: alcoholism. But the young girl also had a secret ally: Corinne. There was little shared between the two. Hoehn grew up in luxury; Corinne grew up in poverty. Betty Ann was white. Corinne was black. But when Corinne came to work for Betty Ann’s family, the friendship was instantaneous – sparking a heartfelt relationship that bonded them against all societal norms. In Corinne and Me: An Unlikely Friendship (AuthorHouse), author Betty Ann Hoehn reaches back to a time when racial issues determined daily activities for the majority of Americans. Her story captures the segregation that many experienced during that time and touches the heart through the story of one downtrodden, but courageous and loving woman who reached across racial lines to help a child and provide the unshakeable love and friendship that would take that child through the most difficult time in her life. “Through my life journey, Corinne has always been there for me; teaching me important lessons in life. My story highlights our unique relationship while drawing attention to important issues in our world today,” says Hoehn. “We are all God’s children; love knows no race, sex or religion.” For years, Hoehn watched as one by one the members of her family succumbed to "funny breath"--her family's euphemistic term for alcohol addiction in a time when addiction was not openly discussed. Little did she know that she, too, would fall victim to the disease. Her determination to overcome and lead a fulfilling and productive life is uplifting and encouraging to anyone who is facing this challenge or seeking to help a friend or family member as they face a life of recovery. Betty Ann Hoehn was born and raised in Memphis, Tenn., and currently resides in Del Mar, CA. Born in 1954, she grew up in the 1960s, a tumultuous time—strictly enforced segregation between blacks and whites, the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, the feminist movement. She received her B.A. from Bowdoin College in 1976 and her M.A. from the University of Memphis in 1997. She is an art historian and independent lecturer. Corinne and Me: An Unlikely Friendship intertwines the racial and segregation issues of the 1960s with positive messages of acceptance, love and faith. If you are searching for Terry McMillan and want to know about ex husband -- go to Google main engine and you'll find that right away, but if you want to find infromation about here work -- search here: the URL is: http://thebestblackbooksearch.com/ or http://bit.ly/tbbbse for short. Search for your favorite authors and let me know what you think. It is a work in progress, and I'm looking for feedback too. I've discovered content I would never have found in a normal Google search. The Best Black Book Search Engine http://thebestblackbooksearch.com
  13. I recently blogged about the fact that most authors who post links to Amazon do not take advantage of Amazon's affiliate program. http://aalbc.it/oWrxtM Someone tried to explain to me why authors do not take advantage of it, by saying they just don't care and are not interested. This seems so illogical because Amazons commisions can be 7, 8% or more depending upon sales -- often exceeding even the author's share of a book's sale. But based upon the acitivity on my latest Blog post on the subject, there seemed to be little interest in the whole issue. Of course the more sophistciated authors are aware of the commisisons that can be earned. Some authors who live in the cities where Amazon does not pay affiliate commisions (currently, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Illinois, North Carolina, Rhode Island, & Connecticut) use the codes of business associates. I give authors a discount on services in exchange for using an AALBC.com affiliate code -- sometimes it even help those authors to make the AALBC.com bestsellers list. Are there any authors out there that link to Amazon without using an affiliate code to earn commissions? If so why?
