What is so fascinationg to me is that most Meteor Showers are actually due to a particular COMET that has come to orbit our solar system! And as I shared in another thread about the recent orit of THE GREEN COMET, I do not believe that scientist teach us everything that they may know about comets. That fact that meteor showers are the mostly the result of a comet that has orbited and then left our solar system to some unknown area such as the Oort Cloud (whatever that is!) and then leave behind meteors is an incredible reality that I never learned in school! Some rare meteor showers stem from an asteroid such as the Geminids of which is the picture I posted. And another major fact about these meteors would be that they occur every year at the same point at which that comet first came into our solar system. So therefore, they are named due to the particulare entry point 'radiant' in relation to the constellation. So then, the LYRID METEOR SHOWERS came from a comet that radiated from the constellation LYRA and it left behind these meteors in April! So every April as the earth moves these meteors shoot through the atmosphere from that very region in the sky! So following are some other AMAZING and interesting facts about this meteor shower that can be seen with the naked eye this year:

[1] While this meteor shower is occurring from April 14 through 25, it will be easier to see because the moon will not be full. It will be a waxing moon and so, the night sky will be darker and this will allow the meteor shower to be easily seen.

[2] THERE IS ALSO A RARE HYBRID SOLAR ECLIPSE! This eclipse will happen two days from now on April 20, 2023 and explains why the moon will be only a slither on the night of the greatest time to see this meteor shower which is April 22, 2023! In order for a Solar Eclipse to occur, the moon is A NEW MOON, therefore, the waxing moon will only be about 6% illuminated on April 22, 2023. A Hybrid solar eclipse is both an annular solar eclipse and total solar eclipse at some point from the viewpoint of the earth in a certain region.

Hybrid solar eclipse

The hybrid solar eclipse is the rarest of all solar eclipses. NASA says that because the earth’s surface is curved, the eclipse can change from an annular eclipse to a total solar eclipse or vice versa as the moon’s shadow moves across the earth.

This latest hybrid solar eclipse will only be viewable from the far southern Indian Ocean, Indonesia, parts of western Australia and the south Pacific.

[3] I must give an introduction to this next amazing point! I love to share this kind of celestial wonder in this community titled CULTURE, RACE, and ECONOMY, in this Black Community because this correlates to the foundation of African American Descendants of Slaves due to the Black Church Culture. Although this is not taught in the Black Church about the very Savior, Jesus Christ, this very LYRID METEOR STORM occurs during the very birth day of Jesus Christ and this is sound Astronomical fact that is confirmed by NASA with the advent of THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM they define as THE GREAT CONJUNCTION OF JUPITER AND SATURN of which occured during the ANNUAL JEWS FEAST OF BOOTHS/TABERNACLE FESTIVAL April 17! For this reason, I have come to realize that when the scriptures spoke of how the sky was lit up, it makes me think that there were more celestial events that occurred along with the Great Conjunction! Scientist now explain further that after a comet orbits and leaves behind meteors, the meteor showers, at times show up more brilliantly than other years, a phenomenon defined as AN OUTBURST.

[4] The comet that gives rise to the LYRID METEOR SHOWER is called THE THATCHER COMET named after a man in New York that identified this comet. However, COMET THATCHER is A LONG PERIOD COMET and it actually came into orbit thousands of years ago, therefore, to the ancient world, it obviously was called something else!

The Lyrid meteor shower – spawned by this content – seems to outburst, or produce an unexpectedly large number of meteors, every 60 years. The next Lyrid outburst is due in 2042. The outbursts happen because of the planets’ reshaping the long trail of comet debris left behind by Comet Thatcher in its long orbit. This debris is what intercepts Earth’s orbit yearly, to create the meteor shower.

The Lyrid meteor shower occurs between April 16-25 every year and will peak on the night of April 22, 2023.

Discovery of Comet Thatcher

Alfred E. Thatcher from New York City discovered this comet – now officially (C/1861 G1 (Thatcher) – on April 5, 1861.

Comet Thatcher will be back in the year 2278. But its debris trail, the Lyrid meteor shower, will be here every April.

Observers in the Southern Hemisphere picked it up in late July and followed the comet for the next five weeks, until it became too faint to see from anywhere on Earth.

Lyrid meteor shower in history

The Lyrid meteor shower has the distinction of being among the oldest of known meteor showers. Records of this shower go back for some 2,700 years.

The Lyrids are associated with Comet Thatcher, a long-period comet that orbits the sun every 415.5 years …, it last reached its closest approach to the sun in 1861.

[5] If COMETS can orbit our solar system and survive the sun and not burn up, they travels close to our earth for weeks. And even if they are not seen with the naked eye, nevertheless they are still close to our planet and this would be an interesting reality in how they relate to our planet!
