Pioneer1 Posted August 19, 2024 Report Posted August 19, 2024 I'm in my mid 50s. That's not old, however I guess that's considered middle aged. I don't feel or look like I thought I would back when I was in my 20s and often wondered about how my life would be if I lived to be this age. It may sound strange but I often compared myself with Mike Tyson who's a few years older than me. Back in the 90s I tried to imagine a young and buff hard core Tyson being a middle aged man of 40 or 50 and what he'd be like.....lol. It was funny to even think about. But this is Tyson...at 58. Not in PERFECT shape but....shit. I wouldn't have thought he'd look like this or even still be trying to half-way fight people even at 40! For those of you over 50, how do you feel or deal with "getting up there" ? Also, is it me or does it seem like people aren't "aging" like they used to when we were children? I'm almost sure as we get older and our perspectives change...what looked old to us at 15 doesn't look old to us at 50 even if it's the same image. However it seems that people in their 60s and even 70s are more virile and active today than they were....say in the 70s and 80s. 1
ProfD Posted August 19, 2024 Report Posted August 19, 2024 Many Black folks 50+ are looking and feeling better in part because they're not working as hard as those who came before them. Also, access to better food and healthcare helps too. That being written, the pendulum can swing wildly. In our 20s and 30s and even 40s, most folks seemed to age at the same rate. However, the other side of 50 is a trip. Some folks still look great and have no medical issues. OTOH, there are others who look aged and/or they're broken down like an old Volkswagen. I've missed every reunion for one reason or another. I'm kinda glad because I really don't want to see how the folks with whom I grew up have aged and whether or not they're still among the living. Thankfully, I was born with decent genetics. I've alway been an old man in younger body. But, glad to still look good and be in great mental and physical health. 1
aka Contrarian Posted August 19, 2024 Report Posted August 19, 2024 The first photo is my high school graduation picture at which time I was 17. Second one was taken last year when I was 90. Yesterday, I observed my 91st birthday. Physically, I have declined. I don't have a lot of energy, suffer some hearing loss in my left ear, need cataract surgery on my right eye and don't have a lot of "pep to my step". Mentally, I'm probably in the early stages if dementia but, personality-wise, I'm still the same skeptic I was at age 20; just a little wiser. Still march to my own drumbeat. "This, above all, to thine own self be true", the words I live by. I would like to hang around long enough to see who wins the presidential election but if one of these mornings I don't wake up , I wouldn't care. "Life is a journey that is homeward bound." I'm curious about the hereafter. zzzzzzzz 2 2
Troy Posted August 19, 2024 Report Posted August 19, 2024 We need a love button. 73 years later wow you've seen a lot of changes in the world -- from a technology perspective more than any other demographic. Happy Birthday! 1
Delano Posted August 20, 2024 Report Posted August 20, 2024 Sometimes I feel old but that is moor a function of my moods. I think a bit more because I have less energy. I just got a haircut and a shave people have told me I look good 3
ProfD Posted August 20, 2024 Report Posted August 20, 2024 Brotha @Delano, still looking good and not a day over [insert number here]. Diet, sleep and exercise boost energy. Grooming makes us look and feel less old too. 2
Troy Posted August 20, 2024 Report Posted August 20, 2024 This was the first year of my life that I’m feeling my age, and that is mainly because of my knees. People say that I look young for my age too. Funny thing is, they are starting to say that about my oldest daughter. With my three daughters. 4
Delano Posted August 20, 2024 Report Posted August 20, 2024 @Troy you're a Daddy congratulations. Looking Good. (In my Freddie Prinze voice) 1
aka Contrarian Posted August 20, 2024 Report Posted August 20, 2024 @TroyAwwwwww, how sweet! Instead of a granddaughter, you got a late-life baby. Hi, Delano! You guys both look young for your age! 2
Pioneer1 Posted August 24, 2024 Author Report Posted August 24, 2024 That sure is a "toothy" family up there.....lol. Like they just left the dentist office from a teeth cleaning or something. But I'm not going to hold you up Troy...... I might have to HOLLA at one of (or maybe both ) your two older daughters you got grinning up there, about some business. I might have to sit down with one of them (or both!) and discuss the future of AALBC....over a cup of coffee and some cheese cake....lol.
Troy Posted August 24, 2024 Report Posted August 24, 2024 LOL! @Pioneer1 Toothy, it is fluoride in the NYC water but you are probably again that huh? You know what my mom is 86 and she has never had a cavity -- neither has my sister and she is pushing 60. I have had a few, but mothing serious not root canals or anything like that, so I guess there is a genetic cpmpoent too.
Pioneer1 Posted August 24, 2024 Author Report Posted August 24, 2024 Your family BETTER have nice teeth if yall wanted to chill amongst the upper class Black elite families of the Eastcoast...lol. All of those Black doctors, professors, and politicians. You and your wife knew better than to bring your children to those Jack and Jill parties with a mouth full of raggedy teeth.
