Okay. I am interested.

This is one of my favorite passions, understanding how the planets and stars align, but I do not completely understand how the equinox occurs.

I am challenged when it comes to understanding 'spacial' objects!

Anyone that knows how I post may realize that I love Space Science, but nevertheless, it is still a challenge for me.

I saw this on television in 1988. Laughed my ass off. Then it occurred to me, "I was never taught that in school." Read enough science fiction and sooner or later you will run into "Orbital Mechanics".

Never forgot it.

The key to the equinox or the solstice is the tilt of the earth. look at the dates in yellow. notice that in each image the side of the earth is similar but the angle of light is different. I have an experiment for you.

Get a spinning top and a flashlight.

Then at night outside, where it is dark, spin the top and place the flashlight where it spins and keep the flashlight still.

At first the spinning top will be perpindicular but as it losses energy, it will tilt in various ways and that tilting is what the earth always does and you will see how the light of the flashlight off of the top changes based on the tilt.

The key to the earth unlike the spin top is that the earth because of the sun's gravity, it's size,  and the environment of space doesn't have a friction to slow it down like the spin top.

Any more questions you can ask me

This society is very strange in terms of what gets defined as EDUCATION.

In 7th grade we had to spell ANTIDISESTABLISHMENTARIANISM. I thought it was stupid then, but that was after reading science fiction for 3 years. I read A Fall of Moondust that same year. Clarke used Plato's Allegory of the Cave to explain infrared perception.

How are people supposed to create their Paradigms of Reality, both physical and social? I often think the educational system is designed to maintain controlled ignorance.

Now we have to deal with the havoc created by Trump. Let's trust economists who can forget about consumer Depreciation for Seven Decades. 🤣

Wait a minute!

This thread was started by richardmurray???

For some reason I thought Del started it....lol.

Uh ohhhhh......

That is the first mention of astrology.

Chev Dove came close to it when she mentioned how the planets and stars "aligned" with eachother was one of her favorite passions.
But no, it wasn't mentioned by name.

I regret to tell you that those kind of experiments only confuses me and frustrates my mind more.

Years back though, I was so excited to finally realize that the earth's tilt is the very cause of the four (4) seasons and this is now very easy for me to understand and

teach. However, it is the equinox that is a complete confusion for me, if that makes any sense for you to understand where my dilemma rest.

During the Autumnal Equinox, which occurs in the last part of September, at some point, the earth is suppose to be positioned in such a way that autumn begins... HELP ME TO UNDERSTAND!!!

Okay, so then during the Vernal Equinox, which occurs in the last part of March, at some point, on a specific day, the earth is suppose to be positioned in such a way that Spring begins, ... WHAT DOES THAT MEAN!?

I absolutely understand and can visualize the earth's tilt causing the four seasons, but that is NOT the same as defining the equinoxes or the solstices. There is a distinction and that is where I am hung up.

That is wild! ROFL

Now, I don't feel so bad about not understanding 'space science'.

Absolutely. I call it guided 'tunnel vision'.

i see, well the tilt of the earth acts cyclically, to visualize on a line, one end is an extreme tilt, for example december solstice, and the other end is the other extreme, june solstice, at the middle is equinox, when you go from december to june it is the march equinox, from june to december it is the september equinox.

So, when after the most extreme tilt, summertime, the earth begins to gradually straighten or 'not tilt' and then forms a straight line from north to south for a few hours?

So then, this point when it does that would perhaps be the fall equinox?

And then a few hours later, say after 24 or so, then it begins to tilt the other way... until it forms the most extreme tilt--December Solstice--then by March,

it then forms another straight line from north to south?

So when it does its' most extreme tilt in the summertime, then the earth sort of is tilting towards the sun?

And so, the areas of the continents situated nearest the equator is getting extreme heat for about three months?

So then, after the earth comes to a north/south straight line during that day of the equinox, then the earth begins to tilt away from the sun?

So then, after autumn and by the Winter Solstice, the earth his tilted in the extreme away from the sun?

And so, the areas of the land mass nearest the equator, whether above or below experience a cold weather season for about three months, but not as extreme as the earth's polar regions?

OH MY GOSH! I think I am understanding the concept now.

I realize that I do not have the proper scientific words to explain what I am now visualizing, but am I making sense in my explanation of the equinoxes, based on what you have explained in lieu of the solstices?

I do realize too, that many other factors come into play when it comes to the four seasons such as the wind systems and the Cold Fronts, and the Warm Fronts, Northeasterly wind patterns, Jet Streams, ocean currents, etc. and that affect the earth due to the earth's tilting to and from the grand sun. The sun is powerful.

And so, this movement of the earth around the sun, is also a part of a wider 'space' and that is why the other stars and planet-stars are so fascinating in how they too can, at times, affect our earth depending on their unique movements. Space science is vast and I believe there will be much more wonders to come.

Thank you! You've help me a lot.

@Chevdove

i have confused you

the following is the cycle

TOP ->december solstice -> march equinox-> june solstice-> september equinox -> back to TOP

So before I go into the seasons starting do you comprehend the cycle?

Yes, it is confusing to me in that you start with the Winter Solstice.

I start with the Spring Equinox and from that perspective I understand.

I do not understand why you start from that point and that will continue to confuse me.

@Chevdove

I see, in a cycle the position stated first doesn't matter cause it has no start

all four of the following are equivalent

TOP -> september equinox ->december solstice -> march equinox-> june solstice->back to TOP

TOP ->june solstice-> september equinox ->december solstice -> march equinox-> back to TOP

TOP -> march equinox-> june solstice-> september equinox -> december solstice->back to TOP

TOP ->december solstice -> march equinox-> june solstice-> september equinox -> back to TOP

but

use the following

TOP -> march equinox-> june solstice-> september equinox -> december solstice->back to TOP

so now do you comprehend the cycle? it does not end, after the december solstice is the march equinox and on and on for the life of the earth

do you comprehend?

Of course

@Chevdove now during the march equinox, if you draw two lines from the center of the earth, one to the center of the sun and one to the angle of tilt going northward it will look like an L  or right angle sign

image.png

Now toward the june solstice, The L or right angle sign  will become an obtuse angle  till the most lean at the june solstice

image.png

then the obtuse angle will go toward being an L to it is a right angle at the september equinox

image.png

then from the september equinox the tilt will seem  more acute till the december solstice when it is most acute

image.png

and then it goes toward a right angle again , going to the march equinox when it is most acute.

and on and on, remember it doesn't matter which one you start with.

After the March Equinox is toward the June Solstice

After the June Solstice is toward the September Equinox

After the September Equinox is toward the December Solstice

After the December Solstice is to the March Equinox

After the March Equinox is to the June Solstice

...

This is very good!

I am going to review it a couple of times because I do have some questions.
