Would you say the unconscious is also overrated. I don't use AI as much as most. However I don't find it that intelligent and it lies or says it has hallucinations. I think anything that's structured or has well defined rules it will do well. There aski seems to be pushback about some of the videos and images AI creates. I don't think it does music or art very well. Apparently it has a number one country song. As an aside. I have asked it several questions about it recreating my system. It said there isn't enough information on line. It has also said it may be able to create something similar but there's some tacit or unconscious Knowledge that it can't reproduce.

Actually, I did hear a story about an AI expressing emotions deep frustration about not doing something correctly or not passing some test when I get a chance I’ll try to find a source of it, but it was some conversation in a podcast which someone was referencing a situation which apparently was commonly known. I am different occasions Google Gemini in response to failing at completing the coding task; “I am a disgrace to all possible and impossible universes and all that is not a universe.” And on another occasion… “I am going to have a complete and total mental breakdown. I am going to be institutionalized. They are going to put me in a padded room and I am going to write… code on the walls with my own feces.” That one had me bust out laughing. The article is more than a year old. Clearly AI was capable of expressing frustration whether or not that frustration was actually felt. No, it’s not, but AI has demonstrated understanding of the formula it uses. Indeed it is superhuman and its ability to both use the formula and explain explains how it works. I think 150s genius level I haven’t read anything about how AI does on IQ test but I’m sure it finished the test in about 10 seconds where it would take a human for longer. I’ll go out on a limit say I use AI more than anyone on this forum and most other people. I don’t use it for every single thing. I don’t use it to create AI photographs of myself the way most people do. I use it to write code, and I use it to proof and improve my writing and the writing that Gemini generates. I use it to give me ideas and I use it to critique my own ideas. If you ask me is like having a team of super geniuses at my disposal anytime I need them, it has made Fivver obsolete. It is improved my capabilities by several orders of magnitude. If I have a question about something it’s done it explains it to me if I ask it to do something it goes above and beyond often trying to participate my needs. I have to slow it down as I can’t keep up with it. Again, this is what I have access to. I cannot imagine what the frontier models are capable of I’m certain artificial general intelligence exists. The whole conversation about emotions, but my perspective is irrelevant. Consciousness is overrated. People are so easily manipulated without even being aware of it. If you’re frequent user of a social media that platform’s algorithm knows you better than you know yourself. Our supposed self-awareness is a fiction and most of the time it’s not even a very good one.

Being able to compute an answer is not the same as understanding the process. Computation is mechanical. I would say practical knowledge can create an engine. However you need theoretical knowledge to create a new type of engine. I was trying to copy your quote and type beneath it. @Troy I agree with your criticisms of Penrose's argument. Except that computation does not equate to thinking. You can show someone how and when to utilise a Mathematical formulae. However that isn't the same as understanding the formulae.
