  1. Turning into a book recommendation thread. How about this. Soul food with a difference. It's vegan.
  2. I truly believe that the Stones themselves loved the artists too. They named themselves after a Muddy Waters song and of course covered many blues numbers as well as Otis Redding,Don Covay and Barrett Strong. In the many interviews the Stones have given, they always give credit to the likes of Elmore James, Bo Diddely and Howlin Wolf. But I do get what you're saying.
  3. Id agree with you that today that there are Brit artists imitating the sounds made by Afro Americans. I'm really trying not to be biased here but I truly believe that the previous artists I mentioned were doing it for love. Yes, they made loads of cash in the process but I think this was mainly due to the original songs they eventually recorded.
  4. Out today window shopping and I came across this interesting looking book. A must buy.
  5. Do you really believe that all pop music STOLE from Afro American music? Loads of Brit bands in the 60s were very deeply influenced by RnB and covered many tunes . I'm sure there was no intention to rob. The likes of the Stones, the Beatles, the Yardbirds,Cream and many others idolised these fantastic artists. Check this
  6. This particular read is on my list. Seems a must have for fans of this great artist.
  7. About to start this. Looking forward to it. I haven't watched the film itself in years but listen occasionally to the soundtrack. Usually pick out a Mayfield album at random. His debut and Roots are amazing.
  8. Cosgrove is a fanatic and certainly knows his stuff. In fact, there's been huge appreciation of this music since the mid 1960s over here. Absolute devotion especially in the record collecting department. Great stuff.
  9. I've read the first and third of these books. Anyone with even the slightest interest in soul music should buy these.
  10. I'll add this to my ever growing wants list. Thanks.
  11. This is something I'm NOT reading as its a new book for young adults and coming out very soon. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/walter-naegle-book-signingdiscussion-troublemaker-for-justice-tickets-68137913333
  12. Id say guns are pretty difficult to get hold of but does seem to be easier now compared to say a decade ago. Virtually crime related, as in gangs. Indeed. Who does ? The worlds gone mad.
  13. Only just found out. Very sad. RIP Toni.
  14. Oops, apologies. Obviously it's HUGE news when this sort of thing happens in the States, we hear about it over here and it's with complete and utter disbelief . Mass shootings just don't occur in the UK. I mean, what the hell is going on ?
  15. And what the hell was the shooting at a garlic festival about? The mind boggles.
  16. Great news,Troy. I put Curtis right up there with Otis and James Browm. A marvellous writer with so many songs with a message. And it would be great to see others chip in
  17. About a quarter way through Travellng Soul, a biography on Curtis Mayfield by Todd Mayfield. Dipping into Jimmys Blues, a small volume of Baldwins poetry. A lovely gift from my daughter.
  18. I have read some but not all. I'm really pleased to have found this shop. Was after Angela Davis' autobiography but it's not in stock at the moment. I'll settle for the Huey Newton book instead. By the way, is there a What are you Reading Now thread ?
  19. Well well well look what ive just found. https://www.newbeaconbooks.com/ https://www.newbeaconbooks.com/african-american-non-fiction
  20. To be honest, I should've added more info to my profile page as I don't think this should be mentioned on this or any other thread. It will be updated.
  21. Yes, that's the traditional home of Cockney lingo. Nowadays, you can hear many dialects . I moved to Kent almost 20 years ago. Not far from London and not from the sea which is great.
  22. Is there a What are You Reading one Thread ?

  23. Hiya Pioneer1, No, I'm not black. I'm a white East End of Londoner, born and bred. Here for the literature, of course
  24. Ahhh yes, while reading a Baldwin biography, the Harlem based one, it was mentioned there. I think .
