I had the honor of interviewing and writing about two inspiring women, Issa Rae and Nicole Franklin for EBONY’s September Fashion Issue.I started following film director Nicole Franklin on Twitter when she launched her IndieGogo campaign for her award-winning film #TitleVII. I remember being strapped for cash but I made a mental note that I’d get the word out about her film. (I kept that promise to myself in ways I’d never imagined.)I was inspired by her drive and desire to bring stories of Black Women’s Joy to the big and small screen. Black women aren’t a single story group and I was thrilled this Emmy-Awarding winning editor is committed to tell as many of our stories as she can.Just as I was finishing up Nicole’s story with EBONY ‘s copy editor,I got a call that Insecure's creator and emmy-nominated actress Issa Rae was in town (Atlanta Metro) filming the upcoming Universal Pictures “Little”.My editor asked if I could I interview her for the cover story. Let me tell you, I was stunned.A day or two later I called my editor in tears. I’ll tell you why; before you can interview or write about anyone you must learn and read about them and what I learned is Issa Rae didn’t come here to play with y’all. This young Peabody-award winning television program creator has put in the work to change the television game! Both of these women don’t just talk about it - They ARE living it.MySpace mate CaShawn Thompson, #thePBG created the hashtag #blackgirlmagic and I can testify these two women filmmakers embodied it. If you want to see what I’m “talking” about - Nicole Franklin’s story is on page 22 and the cover story for Issa Rae on page 56... Pick up a copy of EBONY -September 2018 and read for yourself.#issarae #nicolefranklin #ebony #coverstory #freelancejournalist #ebonypayswell #fashion #magazine #insecure #titlevii #amwriting #theleadstory #screenwriter #televisionprogramcreator #film #producer #blackgirlmagic #womeninmedia #thethrivingwriter

If you had 3 wishes, what would you wish for? Of course, one of the wishes would be to get more wishes. In absence of wishes, then 10-year-old Marley Dias made a goal. She decided to get more books with Black girls as the protagonists into elementary schools. To make this happen she launched #1000blackgirlsbooks campaign. Once she accomplished goal, she then authored a book, "Marley Dias Gets it Done and so can you" to create more activists. "Marley Dias Gets it Done and So Can You" is available from Scholastic Books-
Pwuhahaha!!! These Snatched Co-Sign cards are hilarious!!!
I proud of you! We have to be radical, even when working for a PWI! In fact, one of the terms my former supervisors used to write about me over and over was "strong opinion" I believe that was code word to let others know "beware she will not "shuck, jive and yasam" for anyone in your organization. I couldn't! It is important to let your employer know when they're being racist! Or when they are harming others with their policies.
How can we not?
We must be radical.
HIGH FIVE!!!-

I'll earn my white co-sign badge and get some coverage by my own people LOL! ~ @Troy
Yep! I'm beginning to think that once we have earned the ear of Black folks then white folks want us in their camp because we're crowned the representative. I think the white establishment knows the Black community is NOT a monolith -so they wait until the coronation then they give us a seat at the table World Economic Forum - If we really have a following then we get a seat on the council of foreign relations

I have to cosign everything you've written here @Troy ! This is exactly why I re-focused The LeadStory.org to read "Resurrecting Buried News"... and by the way, you also got a cosign from Publishers Weekly too. So this means we have to just keep pushing until black folks hold our coronation lol.
One thing I've noticed is these media darlings usually jump off a platform ... keep listening to her mom (Janice Johnson Dias) and around the 3:47 mark -there might be a clue.
With this in mind, I also I think they have to first get the cosign of black community... Marley Dias is a product of her network.
Another way the black community promotes its own to the mainstream is protest. For example, it took him years but I doubt if Dapper Dan would have got that Gucci shop in Harlem if black folks didn't cry foul when Gucci bootlegged Dapper Dan's designs.
Another thought, are those authors published by one of the big 5? Maybe they had to appear and don't have the leverage to say otherwise... If that's not the case, then they're doing it bass-ackwards (if my theory holds)
Speaking of which, black authors may need to negotiate better contracts. I'm reminded of Roxane Gay telling SS to shove it when they decided to publish that Alt-Reich dude's book.
But back to the topic, overnight sensations, I think black people have the best platform in America , black people. I hadn't even thought of it that way until your response... Now you got me thinking..

Hello, Mel!
A couple of days ago, I wrote a long post on the "Introduce Yourself" thread, but I don't see it.
Does it have to be moderated?

From YA Author to Newbery Medalist to having his own imprint! "Kwame Alexander Will Start His Own Imprint. The Name? Versify. Get It? " Link: New York Times Books

That is exactly my plan but so far it doesn't involve YA books - at least I don't think it does

@Mel Hopkins, here is what I mean by a lack of journalism: Check out this article in Black Enterprise (that someone shared with me in a direct message via twitter). MARC LAMONT HILL JUST OPENED THE 55TH BLACK-OWNED BOOKSTORE IN THE COUNTRY.
Now we know the source of the information is this website. I published the "54" number years ago. The problem with the article is that they cite a stat, do not reference a source, nor did they even verify the number--which would have been very easy to do if they checked this website. I even made it easy by actually listing the Black owned stores--you don't even have to count them.
Originally, I was reluctant to simply listing the stores, because people will simply copy and paste the information and take full credit for my effort. But i think it is so important for the information to be shared I'm will to deal with it.
It really just irks me so many Black owned respected publications, like Black Enterprise (#2 on my list of top 50 Black Owned Websites) will use my data without linking to it or even referencing the source.

Storytellers play the long game -
"We must remember, we’re a civilization rooted in story-telling.We share information filled with iconic imagery, symbolism, and sounds.
Celebrities are no different.
They use the media to tell stories that voice their platform position or opposition." ~Melhopkinsdotcom

"Marc Lamont Hill, a noted author, social commentator and professor, has made a foray into entrepreneurship by opening a new coffee shop and bookstore in Philadelphia.
His new shop, Uncle Bobbie’s Coffee & Books, officially opens Monday morning in the city’s Germantown section. The store serves up LaColombe coffee, coffee drinks, gourmet teas and hot chocolate." Via The Philadephia Tribune

@TroyI was just thinking about posting something about ISBN. I may not use an ISBN at all. I'm pondering this might be a way from amazon acquiring the title even in an return status. So while you're considering the affiliate program concept, is it possible for you to figure that action (no ISBN) into it? EDIT
