Hey @Del , what is your definition of spirituality?  It seems to be we are born spiritual beings.  It is only the rituals and practices we have to learn.  In much the same way we are born with an innate ability to communicate.  If we are not taught a specific language, we will come up with one on our own.

    Hi Troy,

    This is an inspired definition

Spirituality is the counterbalance to our body, personality and all that is tangible. The body is a ship and spirituality is our anchor in the higher realms.

You could exhange spirituality with world view or existential contemplation of essence.

Religion is a lower order manifestation of spirtuality. Analogous to the word apple and the object. So your spiritual approach defines and informs your actions personality, thought process, and emotions. All of the later terms are constructs or a way to embody the intangible essence. These constructs are what make life feel real. Its easier to argue religion orspirituality. Than the reality of your body. Yet you would have a hard time really believing someone arguing reality.

The irony being that it is your mind that rails against this position. Which is ironic because your mind is closer to spirit than your body.

Thats a first take will post more later.

There's the potential problem of associating the self with our body or our actions. What informs this the mind? The mind is a function of your life experience and also your spirit.

Various people may perceive one or the other in the ascendancy

An admixture of both perhaps or of neither.

You are relatively unaware of the functioning of the body or your destiny. Spiritual practices can shift your perspective so that you
can see both differntly. This ability may be real or as indistinguishable as being in a dream.

Row row row your boat gently down the stream.

Live live life your life. Knowing that it is the spirit dreaming.

An old buddy of mine reminded me of the Michael Jackson Video below. Again it seems social media has has driven people in sane.  I guess today Michael Jackson would be vilified as a racist all over Twitter too.

Interestingly, "the gloved one" did make is own personal transformation from Black to white, including his own progeny...

We have better things to be outraged about.

No because MJ provided the context by the song title and his face.

  3. Identity is a pretty big issue Troy.

African American have no historical  identity sepreate from slavery. Every other hyphenated American can claim a country. I have seen a marked difference between African Americans,

Africans, Caribbean even English people of African Caribbean descent.

It may not have valence for you. However I can agree with tou statement in particular or generally. Since Inam uncomfortable with self appointed arbiter of what is important.

    1. Pioneer perhaps  there is a difference between what you can conceive and what is possible.
    2. @Cynique there are some interesting psychological studies about power and conformity. Most people would rather conform to group opinions that go against their own sense perceptions and values. People want to fit in because they are social. Like prostitutes give all of their money to the pimp.

  4. I read books. And i used to read the New York Press free weekly. Which is how i found a few writers. Like David Foster Wallace and Amanda Filipaci. Which lead to anthology. So if i like the writer I read their entire canon : David Foster Wallace, Jonathan Franzen, Kurt Vonnegut, Ishmael Reed , Roger Zelaney.

Then there are subjects that pique my interest : Mathematicians, Jungian psychology, astrology, tarot numerology, social dynamics. , erotica. , sci fi and Mythology.

And Biographies/Autobiographies  Miles Davis , Prince, Isaac Newton. , Albert Einstein.

There's one writer i found from TV. Jamake Highwater. He was an American Indian writer that wrote about American Indian mysticism in the 90s.

I found out that he was a fraud. He was a Jewish and he got lots if grants ti lecture about indian affairs.

i fail to see why some people hold TV in such low regard.  To me, it is a window to the world  - if you have premium cable.  All you have to do is be a discriminating viewer.  There all kinds of interesting educational and entertaining programs to watch on the History, Science, Discovery, National GEO, channels, plus travelogues, documentaries, a whole catalog of classic movies, comedy specials.  There are also the music channels where you can hear any type of music you like and of course PBS. Then there are the late night talk shows and their celebrity guests who you get to observe and  "hate on".

For somebody like me, a great evening  is to relax on my recliner, nibble on some snacks and sip from  refreshing beverages and watch TV.  Television is my companion and my "remote" is my enabler.  When i get tired of that, going "on line" is my other option where i can interact on FaceBook and AALBC and play Bridge with live partners, and Solitaire by myself.

When i was younger I went clubbing. Went to  musical gigs. , performance art, art and read one to two books a month and did some travelling. I thought life was.more interesting than TV.

Now its more dinner guest once or twice a month. Facebook and Aalbc.

There have been shows i have checked out. Mostly HBO and Show time. However after a few episodes it seems too predictable.

  5. We differ
In simpler terms, existentialism is a philosophy concerned with finding self and the meaning of life through free will, choice, and personal responsibility. The belief is that people are searching to find out who and what they are throughout life as they make choices based on their experiences, beliefs, and outlook.

  6. I tried to make certain that I felt alive. I never felt I knew enough to be WTF. I heard a minister say there are three things on our tombstone.

When you're born, a dash, and when you die. You have no control over when you are born or when you die. The only thing you can effect is that little dash in the middle.
