We Need Your Help...Not Just Your Observation
Troy replied to Pioneer1's topic in Culture, Race & Economy
I don't think "mystery" is a concept worms are capable of experiencing. Again, how do you know that they have not been trying to communicate with us, be we simply don't have the ability to receive, interpret, or comprehend their communication. -

Well gossip is profitable so all the crap YouTube, and the rest of social media, is pushing will continue as long as we are all lapping it up. I have to admit the rumors being pushed about TD Jakes (power bottom, oh my!), Jay-Z (what has Bey been saying) and Lebron (I didn't even know about his involvement!), and others does make very compelling content. I'm content to wait for the trial -- that will be scandalous enough! -

@Pioneer1, so you disagree with the Brother in this Video (previously linked above) and virtually every African scholar who has written on the subject? Still Christianity as we know it is commonly known to have originated Judea, modern day Palestine/Isreal. -

Obviously, I believe reading is important -- and not just at the level to survive but to consume and interpret information. I agree with @ProfD @umbrarchist that unless you probe for additional information it is impossible to determine if the graphic you shared is relevant or accurate. I skimmed the linked article as well as the articles it referenced including the New York Times and eventually whet back to the NEAP website. The Radical Scholarship site seems to call into question the legitimacy of the NAEP's "Proficiency" designation. I did not take the time to probe more deeply to determine if I agree with the assessment -- in fact I may not know enough about the subject to form an meaningful opinion. The most relevant thing to me is how this relates to Black people. I pulled this chart from the NEAP website. which says that 83% of Black 4th graders are below proficient. Collectively everyone is down from 2019, which is understandable given the pandemic, but Black people as an ethnic group have the lowest scores. This is associated with poverty, resources, a movement away from the use of Phonics, and increased screen time. -
Regardless of whatever Fat Joe said; Puerto Ricans are inextricably linked to hip-hop culture. Consider that an axiom. Of course it is not new. In East Harlem, the South Bronx, and other areas in NYC where hip-hop was born, we have a shared culture, which is why Puerto Ricans, or should I say Nuyoricans are part of hip-hop culture. Also, keep in mind there are Puerto Ricans who are as phonetyocially Black as you.

This happens a lot more now -- even in text messages and is very frustrating, it is not just typos being autocorrected.

@Pioneer1, whoa sorry for the scare man I did not imagine that anyone would draw that conclusion. I just removed my photo. I'm pleased to report that I did make it to 2025, as we all know our length of time here on Earth is not known, so making it to 2025 was not guaranteed I trust all of us here make it to 2025 including one of all-time favorite posters @Cynique, aka @aka Contrarian May you all enjoy Peace & Love in the new year!

Sometimes I listen to a right-wing local NYC radio station WABC -- you can stream it from anywhere. There is an on-air personality named Curtis Sliwa who run a vigilante group call ed the Guardian Agents that patrolled trains that ran through the toughest neighborhoods. I remember seeing him do this as a kid. Curtis says they are back patrolling the subway system and the NYC Subways is a bad as he has ever seen it! That is a huge statement coming from him, because NYC subways used to be hellacious. She was burned beyond recognition, so it took time to id the victim. Statements like this are always problematic. The implication that right-wingers are not talking about this because you have not heard it is not reasonable. The right-wingers in NYC are absolutely talking about it. I found it difficult to understand how a jury could let the guy to killed Jordan Neely off scot-free. Apparently, Jordan was already known to authorities and was on a list of "top 50" list NYC subway offenders. He had 42 arrests in the past 8 years including an outstanding warrant for assault. I don't know if you have ever been on a NYC subway when a young man was behaving erratically or in a threatening manner. I bet most people were happy to see him stopped -- though I'm sure most did not want to see him killed! Neely desperately needed help, and NYC is failing in its responsibility in helping the mentally ill. I was on the NYC subway late one night and an entire car was filled with bums (that what we called them back in the day) sleeping on the seats -- there was nowhere to sit down. NYC has to deal with the homeless which also means they need to deal with the price of housing... Botton line if you are poor, NYC is not the place for you. You are not wanted there and they are making no accommodations for you, period.

Drones Flying Around Not Considered UAPs/UFOs?
Troy replied to ProfD's topic in Culture, Race & Economy
A life form that smart would be to us as we are to worms -- we would be incapable of understanding anything they had to relate. At best, we would be nothing more than pets: curious creatures that display an affinity for destroying their environment and each other. -

I'm not sure I'm conflating. I was not talking about the hearings; I was talking about man's propensity to believe outlandish things. But as far as the hearings, based upon our knowledge what is the difference between big foot and little green men (i.e. aliens)? I listened to large chucks of the testimony; did I miss the proof of the extraterrestrial origins of the UFOs or UAPs? Given there are trillions of planets billions years older than ours. I believe the likelihood of superior extraterrestrial intelligence with the capability of reaching earth is almost certain. Has it happened? I'm not so sure. -
Drones Flying Around Not Considered UAPs/UFOs?
Troy replied to ProfD's topic in Culture, Race & Economy
Just because I didn’t know it was a satellite doesn’t make it a UFO. I have not read the article yet, but I can guarantee you. They did not poll 80 million people. They took a representative sample of the population and based upon those responses, they are making an estimate for the entire population. They probably only asked a couple thousand people — if that. It is part of the human condition that we believe all kinds of madness. We can’t help ourselves. Some people are far more likely to believe things like ghost Bigfoot unicorns mermaids, walking on water, parting seas, flat earth,, whatever. -
Drones Flying Around Not Considered UAPs/UFOs?
Troy replied to ProfD's topic in Culture, Race & Economy
One out of three... that seems high. @frankster and @ProfD (anybody) have you ever seen a UFO, or to be clearer; have you ever seen anything in the sky that you thought might be extraterrestrial? Once, when camping and looking up at a star-filled sky, I noticed what looked like a star to me, but unlike a star it was moving across the nighttime the sky. It clearly was not an airplane. I had no idea what it was. I described what I saw to one of my coworkers the next day. Unbeknownst to me he was a leader of boy scout troop and was camping out the same night. He told me he saw it too. He said it was a satellite. I don't recall ever thinking it was an alien spacecraft -- It would take a lot for me conclude that. -

I added images and hyperlinks to the following press release. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TEMPLE UNIVERSITY Professor Dr. Molefi Kete Asante sends a foreboding warning on Donald Trump THE AMERICAN DEMAGOGUE Universal Write Publications (July, 2024)― The American Demagogue thoroughly examines Donald Trump’s presidency, uniquely blending perspectives from communication and Africology. In this edition, Molefi Kete Asante skillfully dissects Trump’s manipulation tactics, focusing on the use of fear, lies, and derogatory language while drawing insightful parallels to historical demagogues. The book goes beyond conventional critiques by exploring Trump’s impact on core American ideals, such as environmental protection, racial justice, and compassion, from a fresh and unique perspective. Asante’s nuanced analysis of Trump’s rhetoric and its implications on the democratic tradition offers readers valuable insights into the resilience of American democracy. As an election-year reflection, the book serves as a distinctive and powerful critique, urging vigilance against demagoguery and emphasizing the need to safeguard democratic principles. Dr. Molefi Kete Asante, PhD, is a leading voice and the seminal theoretician of Afrocentric infusion into culture, politics, and communication. His influence in advancing the agency-centered ideological position in the realm of education and science is unparalleled. Widely read and consulted, Dr. Asante and his books have inspired educators globally and are unmatched in their rhetoric and analysis of Donald Trump. “Trump brings an ominous echo of Hitlerian 1920 and 1930s rhetoric to contemporary American politics. Few want to discuss the elements of Hitlerian memes in the words of Trump, but we ignore these seeds to our later peril,” says Asante. “If Trump is normalized, his rhetoric will become the easy model for other would-be demagogues who will ride the terrifying wave of blatant white nationalism parading as American exceptionalism to the corrupted shore of political chaos. We cannot be ostriches with heads in the sand; we must be attuned to the virulent elements of racism in the society.” Copies of The American Demagogue: Donald Trump is available for purchase anywhere books are sold and at UWPBooks.com Media Contact: Ana Yenenga a.yenenga@gmail.com www.themkainstitute.com About Universal Write Publications Universal Write Publications publishes rigorous scholarship that reclaims the rich histories of the culturally diverse peoples who make up our society. Our focus is to publish a variety of topics through the framework of Black Scholars who write through the African lens: the lived experiences of the diaspora, without compromising the rigor of academic scholarship that dignifies the essence of research, data analysis, and the scientific methods of the academy. About Molefi Kete Asante, PhD Asante has published more than 500 articles and is considered one of the most quoted living African authors as well as one of the most distinguished thinkers in the African world. He has been recognized as one of the 10 most widely cited African scholars. He was named a HistoryMaker with an interview in the Library of Congress. In 2019 the National Communication Association named him an NCA Distinguished Scholar, its highest honor, saying that his writings were “spectacular and profound”. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, at the age of 26, and was appointed a full professor at the age of 30 at the State University of New York at Buffalo. At Temple University, he created the first Ph.D. Program in African American Studies in 1988. He has directed more than 140 Ph.D. dissertations, making him the top producer of doctorates among African American scholars. He is the founder of the theory of Afrocentricity and the think-tank, The Molefi Kete Asante Institute for Afrocentric Studies in Philadelphia.

Word @ProfD @umbrarchist surely you have heard of the accounting firm Arthur Andersen it had some of the world's best accounting pin heads and that firm crashed and burned spectacularly more than 20 years ago. People have been manipulated by others seeking to separate them from their valuables for as long has humans has valuables from which to be separated. Sure TV made that easier and AI fueled social media only promised to put this on steroids, and it won't be just Americans. You ain't seen nothin' yet. -

A personal anecdote adding nuance to your statement. I lived in Harlem for years. I proudly went to my local Carver Savings Bank the Black owned Bank in my neighborhood to open an account. Carver refused to open a business account for me, claiming my business documents were not in order -- which was nonsense! I was saddened and angered they declined to take my business -- one supporting Black people no less! I went down the street to a Bank of American branch and they created a business account for me lickety split! I've had that account for more than 20 years now. Probably very few. But people buy cars for many reasons including status, self-esteem, and pulling honeys. How will taking an accounting course help with this? I don't think the average person needs to understand balance sheets, P/L statements, etc. Understanding compound interest and how that impacts the cost of credits cards or interest earned on savings accounts should absolutely be taught in school -- probably middle school. Look, I have an MBA and have made stupid financial decisions. We all do things we know are not in our best interests -- it is part of the human condition. Sure, teaching people accounting may help but we also need to address the underlying reasons people feel the need to say buy that new car or take a lease on a new car they will never own when buying a used one or taking the bus makes better economic sense. -
The following is the last newsletter I’ll send this year. It is a compilation of all the people on the website who transitioned this year. Given the number of people who thanked me for sending this, it apparently touched more people than any email I sent all year. For that reason, I share it here. In Memoriam 2024

A soon to be finalized study concluded that moderate drinking is healthier than not drinking at all: From the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine's, Review of Evidence on Alcohol and Health (2025) Conclusion 3-1: Based on data from the eight eligible studies from 2019 to 2023, the committee concludes that compared with never consuming alcohol, moderate alcohol consumption is associated with lower all-cause mortality (moderate certainty)
