The full interview http://runt.it/soledadobrien KW: What is the Haitian government doing about the fact that they have a situation where people are being enslaved? SO: It’s such a hard thing for those of us in this country to get our minds around, but it’s completely legal. I’m sure you saw in the piece how the boy named Matthinson’s father sold him for about $12 dollars to go and be a slave for a complete stranger. But it’s an indication of just how devastating the poverty is in Haiti that that’s a viable option. It’s pervasive throughout the country. And unfortunately, it’s perfectly legal.

Question to Soledad O'Brien: How do you self-identify?
Troy replied to Troy's topic in Culture, Race & Economy
Honestly if it were up to me I’d get rid of the “race” question on the census. Soledad argues that she is Black, but fails to see that the same argument she used to say she is “Black” could also be used to say that she is “white”. The whole artificial construct of of race is what is dumb, not the question. With the same logic O'brien completely invalidates any person who is 1/2 Black and 1/2 white but decided to tick the white box on the census form. Indeed if everyone in the country who had Black blood in them were counted as Black we'd be in the majority right now... -
From a recent inetrview with Soledad O'Brien: Kam Williams: William Cooper and Troy Johnson both asked essentially the same question. What did you put down on her census form? William pointed out that Obama checked off “black” when he is just as black as white. How do you self-identify? Soledad O’Brien: I find the question really ridiculous. All the schooling I have to do on this topic is wearing me out. Obama is black. His mother was white. I am black. My father is white. I’m going to give everybody a History 101 lesson. Some black people have white blood in them. This has been going on for many generations, people. Look at any family of black people. They run a range of colors. This is why.

The Tiger Woods of politics is a gross exaggeration. a "related" article on that page shows that the Tiger, who had his worst game as a pro, failed to make the cut at Quail Hollow, had at least 112 liaisons while married. I one could argue that this proves Barack Obama is indeed just a human male. Has anyone noticed that the National Inquirer is almost indistinguishable from mainstream media? Y'all keep bringing up bad news about Barack Obama and your be branded the self hating negroes, you are!

<H6 class=dateline>Authors Unbound Online http://runt.it/nytselfpub By VIRGINIA HEFFERNAN Published: April 26, 2010 New York Times Reports that: "Book publishing is simply becoming self-publishing", and says "..small and crafty can beat big and branded." Could the mainstream finally be giving self-published authors some respect? </H6>

On behalf of the Center for Black Literature and the sponsors of the Tenth National Black Writers Conference, we’d like to thank you for helping to make the NBWC a huge success. The conference would not have been as informative and inspiring without your participation. We’ve received post-conference coverage in a number of magazines, newspapers and journals as well as a great amount of activity on the Web. Many were able to view the conference as it was streamed. On Saturday, May 1, and Sunday, May 2, C-SPAN BOOK TV will air segments of the conference. Below is the date, the panel and the time, as noted on C-SPAN’s Web site, http://www.booktv.org/Schedule.aspx. Please check with the local cable operator in your area for C-SPAN Book TV listing. Be sure to visit our conference Web site and provide your comments on the conference at www.nationalblackwritersconference.org. Stay tuned for more information on Center for Black Literature programs, www.centerforblackliterature.org. Once again, thank you for your support. Sincerely, Brenda M. Interesting. Could it possibly be that the so called "friends" were never really Cecil's "friends" iin the first place? Actually I'm surprised someone as old as Cecil would feel this way. Does he think that Warren would have approached him in the first place if he could not provide the "Prior" connect? Friendship are never based upon what you can do or get from someone else. This, I'd imagine, would make forming true friendships for a celebrity more difficult, than for the average person.

Careycarey (so nice he named himself twice), I don't watch golf either, but from what I've heard in the media Tiger has a repurtation for the behavior he describes. Now that may be media hype, but the fact remains he does have that reputation. You may have a point though about Tiger. If he can't be allowed to be his true self other aspects of his life will suffer. Can you image the world following you around taking notes and photos as you try to "get some"? As far as sex before a competition. I guess it is a matter of what kind of session you are having. If it is a quickie that would help eliminate stress. But if we are talking about laying some serious pipe that would tend to deplete your energy - not something I'd recommend before a boxing match, but for a golf competition, it probably would not make much difference...

Man it is the newspapers that are dying, not Kam Williams. Kam is still generating a ton of non-fiction book reviews, celebertiy interviews, film reviews and other commentary. He is a regular AALBC.com contributor. Just google him...

Bookfan, yeah using aliases to hype or slam a book on Amazon is nothing new. I dislike the practice because it does not take many fake reviews to soil all the reviews. This is one of the reasons I ignore Amazon reviews in favor of reviews published by known entities/individuals. I would be careful drawing conclusions about the relative sales volume and revenue, of books, as derived from Amazon rankings; unless the book is ranked in the thousands or better. The majority of books in Amazon's database sell less than a handful of copies. I would suspect that anything ranked a million or lower would fall in this category. I knew a book seller who believed that clicking on a book effected the rankings. Since he was the only person selling his titles he could compare the Amazon ranking against known sales; the books clicks seemed to be a reasonable conclusion given the relative rankings of the titles he sold. Also some titles had not sold were ranked.

Chris Kam has been a prolific as ever. He is still around. What make you think he is MIA?

You right Cynique. I saw "Cyniquian" Level Poster" and got confused. Is it too late for me to change my reply?
-
I agree with Chris I believe homeboy is trying to get on the gravy train. He would would have a better chance if his delivery were not that of a country preacher. His delivery would have to be more like that of a Shelby Steele or John McWorther in order to be taken seriously by folks that would pay for him to speech. His vocal style would only appeal to Black folks and he be hard pressed to make a business out of that schtick -- unless he wanted to be a comedian. Obviously Black people have a lot to be proud of despite the recent examples of failure, by a minority within our group that he cited. Hey Xeon you can make it easier on folks by just embedding the videos directly into the post: Just click the "the 3 overlapping square icons" and paste the youtube url when prompted http://www.youtube.c...h?v=BEV0DiFkUQU

Attica Locke's novel Black Water Rising (available in paperback today!) was just short listed for the Orange Prize for Fiction, one of the most prestigious awards for literature in the UK.

Cynique that is SO true. Furthure, people want to say Kelley is dishing dirt on Oprah because she is Black -- completing ignoring that is Kelley has dome the same to JFK and others -- money is the motivation not color. Now if you don't buy into the flawed racist logic. You become a self hating negro, an enemy to the race. It is also amazing how many people who has done so little for Black people are so willing to others self hating negros.... I actually underestimated how many people literally worship Oprah. New York City so different than the rest of the country; one who lives here can easily lose touch about how the rest of America or even most other Black people think... I guess some people are not old enough to remember Oprah in the early days. That is all I rememeber, as I have not watched a single show all the way through, in about 20 years.

Troy replied to the_original_misty's topic in Culture, Race & Economy
FK I wish I had that perspective. I have not checked but is the person saying they are the old Misty or could it simply be someone with the same name?
