Thousands may soon be evicted in NYC
Not all landlords are greedy some are just regular people who hold mortgages -- that must be paid -- on properties they are renting out. That said NYC has set themselves up for this they provided tax inceptives to wealthy people to by property for investment purposes -- These properties are kept off the market and never lived in. The amount of affordable housing created is shameful given the number of people requiring it. If you are evicted or even get a notice, good luck finding an apartment again. Corporate management companies will file paperwork and send you an eviction notice if you are a week late on your rent -- even if you pay before your court date! You don't want to get evicted in NYC I was both a home owner and renter in NYC. May last apartment's rent was $2,900 a month and my rent went up $100 a year like clock work. When I left the new lease was $3,700 a month not including utilities! As a home owner it cost me almost $86K to move into my house. Both of these properties were in Harlem. New York City's housing is insane and honestly it was the primary reason I left.

From This Perspective: Black America, Get Your Own House In Order Before You Burn Everyone Else's Down
@Mzuri Why do you always site The Daily Mail as a source? Surely you must realize they are an unreliable source for news and information. Even Wikipedia does not allow they to be cites as a source, because of lack fact checking and out right making shit up. Using The Daily Mail to support your argument actually weakens it. One of the great weakens of the WWW is that one can easily find something to support any hairbrained idea out there. It has also become increasingly difficult to sort out what is true from what is bull -- especially when human nature biases us to believe what comports to our world view regardless of the quality of the source and reject everything else.

SCOTUS Justice Black Female Candidates
You can appreciate the criteria for identifying the that "top person" is subjective. A diverse court is a criteria that should be applied as well. For FAR to long the "top" candidate has been white men. Do you believe in the history of the court no Black woman has ever been qualified. But to your point, we don't want to appoint an unqualified Black woman just to get a Black woman in there, and no one is suggesting that we do that. Assuming we survive long enough, the world will become colorblind. It just will not happen in anyone's lifetime who is alive now.

Black Booksellers, Publishers, and Distributors to Petition a Presidential Pardon for Marcus Garvey
Justice4Garvey Campaign Partners with Black booksellers, Publishers and Distributors to Petition a Presidential Pardon for Marcus Garvey CONTACT: Keilia Phillips now@justice4garvey.org, 202-349-1498 Kellie Didigu, media@mahoganybooks.com (Washington, D.C.) January 28, 2022 Black booksellers, publishers, and distributors throughout the U.S. have partnered with the Justice4Garvey campaign to petition President Joe Biden to grant a posthumous pardon to civil rights leader Marcus Garvey. The goal of the campaign is to gather the required 100,000 signatures necessary to elicit a response from the President. The signatures must be collected within a stipulated 30-day period, from February 1, 2022 to March 2, 2022. The campaign is focused on raising public awareness and collecting signatures during Black History month. To sign the petition and receive updates, visit http://justice4garvey.org/sign-the-petition This effort of Black booksellers, publishers and distributors is co-led by MahoganyBooks, The Dock Bookshop, Black Classic Press, AALBC.com, and Africa World Press. The group issued the following statement: “We are asking President Biden to make amends for the 1923 unjust persecution and imprisonment of the Honorable Marcus Garvey. Garvey’s conviction took place in a trial replete with bias and error, including insufficient evidence, perjury by a witness at the initiation of the U.S. government, and his proceeding as a criminal defendant without the benefit of a lawyer. We believe that a presidential pardon will acknowledge, and begin to right, the wrong committed against Marcus Garvey, and by extension, the global community of Black people. We are calling on global citizens who believe in restorative justice to sign the petition for a presidential pardon for Marcus Garvey, starting on February 1, 2022. We also encourage you to share the petition with your family, friends, and your social and professional networks throughout Black History Month.” Dr. Julius Garvey, Marcus Garvey’s son, stated in response that “Black booksellers and publishers are the keepers of our history and our stories. This group is helping ensure that my father’s life and legacy is honored and told truthfully. I applaud these Black booksellers and publishers from around the country working to raise the visibility of the Justice 4 Garvey campaign and collecting petition signatures to help clear his name.” On Sunday, February 6th, 2022 at 6:00 PM Eastern Time, a special Town Hall for the public is scheduled and will include presentations from Dr. Julius Garvey, son of the Hon. Marcus Garvey, and several other leaders in an effort to inform and encourage the community at-large to sign the global petition. Who’s Really Controlling Black America? Bigger question: Is Black America Really Paying Attention?
It is the American way. But I do not believe it is inherent to the human condition, nor is consumerism. We have been conditioned to behave this way and no one is being served... Think about; it our entire society is based upon buying more and more stuff -- in fact our system would collapse if we stopped by more things than we actually needed. It is why we are in a society where paying $70MM for a jpeg file can be construed to "make sense."

Who’s Really Controlling Black America? Bigger question: Is Black America Really Paying Attention?
True and this is what keeps us apart. But this is not unique to Black people -- most people in America are out for themselves. Sadly, this is true as well, but we have to get ourselves together before we can start thinking globally. Think about how easy Jack Dorsey (Twitter) got Black people to embrace his platform and ignore all the Black ones out there... Black success is defined by white validation. Few people will tout being, say an AALBC bestselling author. No, they lament the fact that the can not become a NY Times Bestselling author. Amazon brilliantly exploited this by creating thousands of categories in which one could be a bestselling authors -- and we work hard to generate the the sales to become the #1 Amazon bestselling author in say the "Non-Binary Underwater Basket Weaving" category. Again this is not unique to Black folks white folks game the Amazon bestsellers list for the same reason. The difference is when white folks do it they are largely supporting their own -- when we do it we support their businesses and marginalize Black ones...

It’s Here My First NFT Is Live
I'm taking a meeting next week with a Black owned NFT marketplace, considering offering Literary NFT's, presumably book covers, text, audio, etext, or unique author contributions. For the life of me I can not think of a business model that make sense. In other words why would someone by, say, an image from a book like the one Daniellegfny just shared? Is it purely an investment in what one believes is an appreciable asset? It is because you are granting a license to someone else to use the image? It is because someone likes it so much that they plan to display it in their home and boast the they own the original asset? I can see a case potentially for #2. What stops someone else from selling the identical digital asset? @daniellegfny I was going to bid $5 for your art just to get the ball rolling, but Open Sea does not appear to support cold storage wallets (I have Trezor) and I don't feel like creating a wallet on the web. All I'm doing now is simply holding Bitcoin and Ethereum cyrpto in hopes it appreciates over the years Daniellegtny What are the transactions costs associated with creating and selling the NFT you posted on open Sea? The are a whole variety of issues with the entire business model. Meta and all the other social media platforms getting into the business -- doing exactly what Open Sea is doing when make me reluctant to enter the space, since everyone will flock to Meta's platform. Perhaps my biggest concern is I simply don't understand way anyone would pay almost $70MM a digital art -- when nothing else stops anyone else from using it. To me this is just another example of our wealth inequality: one in which working people are homeless and others have $70 mil to spend on a jpeg. Does anyone truly believe this (below) will resell for more in the future or is "worth" the price paid? But if you are a multi-billionaire, what is $70,000,000?

What have you created with other black people most recently?
Ok it think I know what you mean now. Here are two books that should meet your requirements. Raisins in Milk by David Covin everybody involved in producing this book was black; Editor, Artist, book cover designer, typesetter, printer, author, booksellers, distributors. Covin was clearly very intentional about this and this is rare.

Blacks attacking Blacks for fun and profit
Sure you do, as a consequence of reading the Daily Mail . Now I'm aware of the Cardi B debacle -- even though I could care less. See how that works? The Daily Mail always struck me as the equivalent of the National Inquirer (that still around?).

Time Markers or experiments with time.
Hey @Delano sorry I missed your question when it was originally posted. I've been slammed recently and believe time markers made sense based upon your original post.

Blacks attacking Blacks for fun and profit
Stefan don't discount or overlook the purveyors of this garbage -- the platforms that encourage this are the true benefices and are apparently at little risk. Cardi B, win is purely symbolic, as I doubt the woman posting lies about Cardi has the money to pay and the platform pushing this stuff has plenty of others willing to do that same thing. Your reaction and @Mzuri illustrates why this sort of thing is so profitable. It creates controversy, and controversy drives engagement, and engagement drives revenue. Nothing will change, for the better, until we start engaging on more important things than a Cardi B and her trolls.

Why the Black Book Ecosystem Needs Your Support – January 27, 2022
From the New York Times bestselling author and National Book Award finalist, a biography in verse and prose of science fiction visionary Octavia Butler, author of Parable of the Sower and Kindred. Buy Now ▶ Support the Black Book Ecosystem Bookstore: The Dock Bookshop, Fort Worth, TX This is my friendly reminder to support your independent booksellers. People often ask; why I spend so much time, energy, and money supporting other booksellers — my “competition” — when I could use these resources to support my own business? I do it because there are so many great books, but increasingly fewer curated platforms with the visibility to get these books into the hands of the readers, who are most likely to enjoy and benefit from them. This is particularly true for books written by or about Black people. There are fewer platforms publishing critical book reviews; covering, participating in, promoting, and hosting events; promoting authors and their books; bestowing awards; than ever before. These are things that AALBC does, and it is only possible because of your book purchases and website engagement. AALBC can not function in a vacuum. There is an entire ecosystem of Black book professions that I must work with to learn about the books and authors that I share with you. AALBC is better when there is a vibrant “Black Book Ecosystem.” This is why I actively promote and support other booksellers and provide the following information on AALBC: Publisher and Distributor: Africa World Press & The Red Sea Press Useful Resources ▪ Black-Owned Bookstores ▪ Black-Owned Book Websites ▪ Black-Owned Book Distributors ▪ Top Black-Owned Websites ▪ Black-Owned Magazines ▪ Black-Owned Newspapers Often we default to Amazon when it comes to our books. As a bookseller for almost 25 years — most of that time, unfortunately, as an Amazon affiliate — I understand the destruction Amazon has unleased on the Black Book Ecosystem. From Amazon’s perspective, we are either competition to be eliminated or sharecroppers for their plantation. Marcus Books, Oakland, CA Fortunately, there is still an option: Support your indie booksellers! Amazon is simply not going to do the things that AALBC and other, mission-driven, indie booksellers do. Our goal is to support the culture, not extract as much wealth from it as possible. You don’t have to tear up your Prime card and boycott Amazon, just keep us in mind when it comes to books. We will all benefit in the long run. 🙂 OK, I’ll get off the soapbox. If anything I wrote resonates let me know: troy@aalbc.com. Even if I’m off base, I’d love to hear from you either way. Dear Reader, Members of the Black Book Ecosystem have committed to help gather 100,000 signatures to request an official response from the White House and President Biden for a posthumous exoneration of the Rt. Addicted to Crack, Basketball Great Chris Washburn Tells His Story
- "Pro Black" parents who are shocked that their black son/daughter married a White person
I’m “pro Black,” but this is in direct reaction to the country we live in, so is being racist. I believe the science and reject the notion of multiple human races. That idea was created by so-called White people who began using race to practice racism. Black people can be racist as well. I actually have to work hard at not being racist. If a kid of mine married someone white I’d have no choice but to support my child and embrace their decision. i consider it a good thing that my kids are not as racist as i am or was. They never had to be...- What films need to be blockaded from view today?
ProfD I’m afraid if we owned all the means of production and distribution of our entertainment, we would succumb to the same market forced White folks do and produce simulator or even worse material. “blackploitationfilms, 1970s sitcoms, gangster rap, black reality shows,…” are all are easy to create and make money. people who produce culturally important entertainment usually struggle. Are there any recent counter examples?- Unsung Hero
you know after reading this i was thinking about excerpting the exchange between Mzuri and Cynique and sharing it in a newsletter. It may not get more to post but it will definitely get people to read, which is useful to. while they definitely disagree they, i think they enjoyed the exchange themselves. They traded really good barbs the one below was a goodie 🙂 Of course when Cynique is on a roll she has few peers. like a good fight the attendees witness a exchange of ideas get some entertainment. And the combatants get to hone their skills and and live to fight another day 🙂- The NFL Gets Rid Of The ‘Racist’ Wonderlic Test
@nels Given the lack of moderation on the comments, it seems like the article was written purely for the sake a giving racist trolls something to to use to advance the notion of "racial" inferiority. I wish they would simply take sports out of schools, it is way out of control today. The athletes should be paid and the pretense of attending school should just be dispensed with.- It is MArcus Garvey's Birthday, thoughts to his vision?
@Dr Francis Welsin, please define: RWS I've always been a proponent of Garvey's ideas. If fact I pay homage to him on this site, as you'll find Black Stars scattered about the site. Anytime the power that be murder, or otherwise eliminate a Black person, you know that person was doing something to substantively empower Black people. This is why I new Obama had zero reason to fear being assassinated... @ProfD, I hear you, but the only thing is that whenever Black people do for self, white folks see fit to destroy it. As an aside: I'm involved in an effort to collect 100,000 signatures, during the month of February, to get Biden to exonerate Marcus Garvey. Garvey's son, Dr. Julius Garvey is leading the effort. Stay tuned...- How We Can Win: Race, History and Changing the Money Game That's Rigged
“So if I played four hundred rounds of Monopoly with you and I had to play and give you every dime that I made, and then for fifty years, every time that I played, if you didn't like what I did, you got to burn it like they did in Tulsa and like they did in Rosewood, how can you win? How can you win?” Bestselling author and political activist Kimberly Jones declared these words amid the protests spurred by the murder of George Floyd in the Summer of 2020. She gave a history lesson that in just over six minutes captured the economic struggles of Black people in America and within days, the video had been viewed by millions. In How We Can Win, Jones delves into the impacts of systemic racism and reveals how her formative years in Chicago gave birth to a lifelong devotion to justice. She calls for Reconstruction 2.0, a multilayered plan to reclaim economic and social restitutions—those restitutions promised with emancipation but blocked, again and again, for more than 150 years.
