A black avant-garde composer from Britain turns outlaw in Los Angeles. She flouts a California law which dulls people’s minds by requiring four daily hours of screen-watching. In L.A., Angelica Morgan finds an audience and also, unexpectedly, love, a prison sentence, and a passion to stop the insidious law from taking hold in Britain. TURN ON, TUNE OUT is available from Amazon as an e-book (June 17, 2017, 978-989-99873-1-9) and a paperback (May 24, 2017, 978-989-99873-0-2) : https://www.amazon.com/Turn-Tune-CYNTHIA-ADINA-KIRKWOOD/dp/9899987301/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1498344804&sr=1-1&keywords=turn+on%2C+tune+out …

“After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) becomes a fugitive who attempts to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But soon he is pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city – forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.” I think the bald cut and hoodie, rather than the golden headband and 'fro, brings a nice contemporary touch to Luke Cage. In addition to cleaning of the street of Harlem, maybe Cage will go after rogue cops hell bend on shooting similarly garbed brothers.... that be fun. The first issue was published by …

Check out all 40 books nominated for a 2020 NAACP Image Award in the following eight literature categories; Biography/Autobiography, Children, Debut Author, Fiction, Instructional, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Youth/Teens. There was a time when the titles on this list were quite controversial as they tended to skew heavily toward celebrity book. The choices are much better, nowadays but skew to folks willing to pony up the entry fee. There are many great books from 2019 not on this list for that reason. There were also some odd choices like like the book, More Than Pretty: Doing the Soul Work That Uncovers Your True Beauty, by Erica Campbel…

I started AALBC.com in 1997 and have been it only webmaster. Today, dare I say it, AALBC.com is the best website dedicated to Black books ever built Really, AALBC.com is a site dedicated to Black people and joins a list of a many sites, in a variety of niches,…

"Marable's book was also controversial upon its release, just three days after the scholar's death, for its complicated depiction of a slain civil rights figure. Critical acclaim came soon after however, with Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention receiving a nomination for the National Book Award and named one of the New York Times' top 10 books of 2011. ~www.theGrio.com TBL featured the Malcolm X book earlier this year in its Black History Month episode:

Hello all not sure if I am in the correct place or not. If I am great and if I'm not please forgive no harm meant. I would like to invite you to check out my Historical fiction novel titled Finding Home. With everything that is going on today with the issue of racism my book could not have come at a better time. It was because of racism that my family was separated for over 100 years. My family’s story offers a glimpse of hope to everyone who is affected by racism today. The issue of racism has never been dealt with it has always just been sort of swept under the rug in recent times the fight died down and black people just became comfortable with where we were so t…

Someone somewhere online said the following "I don't read books, I'm too lazy for that tbh" Now audio books exists and video exists which can provide information to a user, so I did not quote this person to suggest ignorance. But the quote made me think, as a writer. Question Z)To the growing populace in humanity who do not read books and by extension, don't read much, are video learners, what is the financial opportunity for the writer? Someone somewhere online said the following "I always considered the holodeck to be the worst idea they came up with--an egregious mode of self-indulgence totally at odds with the advanced, enlightene…

Novel: Just Before Too Late by Mel Currie ISBN: 978-1734191103 I'm the author, Mel Currie. Of course, I'm trying to drum up interest in my novel, Just Before Too Late. It was released on December 3, 2019 and is available at Amazon in both print and eBook formats. Please find a synopsis and a little bit about the author below. So far, the novel has received two reviews. I've read both of them with great gratification, but I cannot claim on the basis of these plaudits that the novel has gotten traction. Clearly, I would need to hear much more in a positive vein before I could conclude that. Here's a link to the reviews: https://www.ama…

About five years ago at a funeral, the Lost Tribe of Levi was mentioned during the service. I googled it a few weeks later and learned about the Lemba Tribe in Kenya and Zimbabwe. This tribe has the priestly DNA of the Levites, the tribe designated by God to be the protectors of his word. I had always heard about black Hebrews all around the world, so I thought it might be interesting to write a book about how that migration might have taken place. The legacy would end in the United States with a black woman. When I started the book I had no idea that this was a story over 3000 years. In order to finish it in my lifetime, I spaced it out every 14 generations. I was amazed…

There is a new book that has been getting plenty of media coverage, The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together by Heather McGhee. I learned about the book on my local NPR affiliate. The author makes the case that racism, in particular racist legislation actually hurts more white people. Predatory loans in the 1980s originally targeted Black folks, but millions of white people ended up losing their homes. College only became prohibitively expensive when Black people started attending in greater numbers. The author acknowledges despite the harm done to white people, Black people, collectively are hurt even more. …

Hi all! I'm posting in the hopes that AALBC might review Caine Prize for African Writing winner Namwali Serpell's debut novel, THE OLD DRIFT (3/26, Hogarth/Crown, ISBN-13 978-1101907146), which just received a 4th starred pre-pub review (blurbs at the bottom of the post). THE OLD DRIFT broaches the topics of colonialism, independence, the AIDS epidemic, white supremacy, familial legacy, and the infinite variations of lust and love, all depicted in a literary style that mixes historical fiction, fairy tale, suspense, magical realism, and science fiction. Instead of writing an "immigration story," Namwali has written a "reverse immigration story," in…

"Now, almost 100 years later, this stellar collection has been reissued as Voices of the Harlem Renaissance. Its publication heralds today’s literary renaissance with the anti-racist movement sparked by the protests against police brutality after the world witnessed the murder of George Floyd." Tragically, the owner of the small press who produced this book died earlier in the year. The family has decided to shut the company down. This week I sold a box of these books and have one more box left. I'm not sure I'll be able to get any more and I don't know what the print run. At 14 bucks this autographed (by Troy Johnson, not …

Continued from Part One In order to give life and purpose to the three faceless mermaids that hang on my wall, I had to first give them names. Shimmer, StarFire, and SeaStar came to life in my literary vision. I could see them at long last and they were beautiful, brown-skinned,orphaned, mermaid sisters. They reached out to me every time I passed their stilled images on the wall. I had to tell their story. The voice that continually awakened me up in the middle of the night, beckoned me to write a book. Always three and four o’clock in the morning, I could be found in my dimly lit bedroom frantically writing. The question that plagued my thoughts was this: What w…
