  1. It has been a minute since I've laughed out loud reading something on these forums -- thanks Cynique.

  2. Perhaps. All scientists are flawed humans like the rest of us.

  3. “THE ONLY THINGS TRUE…ARE THE LIES”After living one way for a while, you tend to take certain facts for granted: the earth is round, the sun rises in the east, and the girl you’ve raised as your daughter is truly yours. Everything changes for Michael Crusher after a car accident leaves his wife and his daughter, Raven, at death’s door. When a routine blood test reveals that Michael can’t be Raven’s biological father, he begins to question everything about his wife; about their love; and about their marriage. Devastated, Michael investigates his wife’s past with the help of her younger sister, Zoey Jordan. What follows is a series of twists and turns that leads to a hard truth: his wife is not as perfect as he once believed. As they hunt down the answers, leaving no stone unturned, revolving around Raven’s parentage, they find the truth to be more difficult to bear than ignorance ever was. Zoey isn’t completely forthcoming with what she knows, and Michael doesn’t know whom to trust.Filled with searing emotions and heart-pounding suspense, "Ruined" is a thrilling mystery about skeletons in the closet and complex family dynamics. Each reveal adds a startling layer to the story that will leave readers yearning for more. Michael’s journey is arduous and very nearly consumes him, and this book maintains its emotional intensity all the way to the final page. 4. So religion and science are similar in that, in the wrong hands both can cause great harm. But, this is true for almost anything. Of course this does not make science a religion or vice-versa.

  6. Thanks for posting this Troy! It expresses my feeling about a slickly made movie based on a fictional comic book glorifying African royalty, co-opting all of the bravery and accomplishment of Black American slave descendants. Blacks in this country ought to get the stars out of their eyes long enough to give their heroic forefathers equal time! Because the black guys who made Black Panther realized that the African tradition of polygamy contributed absolutely nothing to the telling of their story. As long as irrelevant issues are being raised, the question could also be asked why there was no reference to cannibalism, another ancient African tradition. @Del Why don't you and Pioneer start advocating people eating each other to pay homage to the honest African choice of cannibalism. Throw that in the mix with sex and kill 2 birds with one stone.

  7. I don't know anything about Joel Osteen. This was the first time that I listened to anything he said for more the 30 seconds. Now that you mention it I remember you (or someone here) saying Joel would not turn over his church to those displaced by the Houston floods. That was not my point. I was just saying his message was sound. Christians and their Bible, relatively speaking, have not be around very long. Exploring the Earth did not begin with Europeans. Africans visited the Americas long before Columbus, even before Christ. Belief in a higher power did not stop Africans from traveling the world.

  8. Oh I thought I was pretty clear @Pioneer1, science itself does not espouse religion, but individual scientists may in their own personal lives. I try not to throw around absolute terms like "never." I can tell by your capitalization of the word, that you are placing emphasis on this word. Despite this, I still agree with Cynique on this issue

  9. Cynique Nobody said they were against woman having multiple husbands. I simply made the realistic observation that in today's modern open society, single woman can and do play the field, but when it comes to marriage, they are looking for that one Mr. Right, rather than deluding themselves into thinking that any man worth having would consent to being a member of a team of husbands married to one woman. Get real. Well what's wrong with giving people who want to do it the OPTION to do it? Whether you agree with it or not, step back and let THEM make that decision. Would you want to be one among the multiple husbands of a woman? What's "open and progressive" about this? It is a form of exploitation, by the person who has more than one spouse. Who would voluntarily want to be in the pecking order for a shared mate? You? It's more beneficial to just be a "side piece". There are a WHOLE LOT of men who are "sharing women" in this society right now. What do you call it when a woman is cheating on her husband with another or multiple men? These men are SHARING one woman. And it's the same way with men who cheat on their wives. The women in the affair knows the man is married and is SHARING him with his wife. Single women, like single males, lead the kind of lives they want to so why was the subject of polygamy even raised by the person who raised it? Because the person who raised it (Pioneer...lol) wanted to know why an AFRICAN TRADITION was left out of an African themed movie. Delano Perhaps societies that at more open, fair or equitable or about sexual relationships, would also be more progressive in the main This is true. Sex and sexual relationships are one of the most tender and akward of social subjects and if a society is free enough to allow sexual freedom...then we can be pretty sure there is more freedom in less touchy subjects. People are smart enough to not say this publicly. Lest some uninvolved party judge There is a huge difference between what people say and what they do. The Down Low indeed. Excellent point. And that's exactly what this society forces too many people to do.....lie. It's better to have a free and open society where consenting adults are allowed to do as they please than to FORCE them into an arrangement that clearly doesn't work for most people. You may be confusing a harem with polygamy polyandry or polyamory. She's not confused....lol....she's trying to CAUSE confusion. She doesn't really have a position, just wants to argue. Like I said in another thread, if I'm not here she'll find you or Mel or someone else to start a meaningless argument with. But I'm glad you brought up these points. I should do a thread on these different concepts....... Polygamy Polyandry Polyamory

  10. I bet there were a few of you yesterday, not all but a few, thinking: who the heck is this new dope begging for a free book review, posting mushy quotes with bad grammar, and talking about the importance of black women. Answer? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Noooo? Ugh… fine, I’ll answer the freakin question myself, thank you very much. My name is Domovoi Elias Eliot. I’m a writer. Not inspiring. Just a writer (an author if you’re nasty). Truth is I’m no different than Tayari Jones, or Toni Morrison, or Ta-Nehisi Coates except they know Oprah and they are New York Times Bestsellers and I’m quite sure they’re better writers than I am but besides that there is truly no difference between us. I’m what you would call The Ready Unknown as in I’m ready and very good enough to someday be on everyone’s bookshelf or in their Kindle library but when will this miraculous moment happen is truly unknown. It may never happen. I might not ever meet Oprah. But I will never stop trying to seize opportunities to impress willing readers with stories that may twist the mind and quotes that may sooth the soul. If I’m lucky… I’ll do both. 11. @Delano, for example, I don't know where you get the information to make this statement -- particularly the smugness part. Did you read a survey that collected data on smugness, or is this statement based upon you anecdotal observations? Early in this conversation you accused me of making generalizations. Your statement about scientist is a bigoted generalization, but you can't see it. Usually when you accuse me of something of something are actually guilty of it yourself. The faults you see in other I suspect is a crystal clear reflection of how you view yourself. Your quote really underlies the contempt you seen to have for scientists. The best example of you confusion of science is reflected in your agreement with Pioneer's statement, "Absolutely science has become the new religion in the West!" I replied to pioneer's statement by writing: "Your categorization of science is completely wrong @Pioneer1. Science, unlike the world's great religions, would change a belief tomorrow if new information was presented that proved the current belief false." You did supported Pioneers statement by writing: "Do you realise how wrong you are. I'll give you some time to see if you can work it out." Actually now that I reread you reaction I see that it is a smug as you accuse scientist to be. Another example of you reflecting your own faults onto others. I replied to Pioneer with a reason why I disagreed with his statement, but your reply included the smug, passive-aggressive, and condescending; "I'll give you some time to see if you can work it out." If you were interested in my understanding you would simply explain. -------------- From the article Mel referenced: "Science is continually refining and expanding our knowledge of the universe, and as it does, it leads to new questions for future investigation. Science will never be 'finished.'" Science ≠ Religion

  13. This past Sunday I started rolling out the new website design. There are still hundred of pages that need to be converted some pages will be trivial to convert other will take some time. Many of these pages were created 15 years ago or more using old version of HTML or proprietary code… I’;ll spare you the boring technical details — basically I have more work to do, but a lot has been accomphished. I started AALBC.com in 1997 and have been it only webmaster. Today, dare I say it, AALBC.com is the best website dedicated to Black books ever built Really, AALBC.com is a site dedicated to Black people and joins a list of a many sites, in a variety of niches, doing the work of ensuring black people have a voice, they own and control, on the web. Thank you everyone for your support over the years — without it AALBC.com would be a faint memory, to a few people.
