The article title reads:How History Erased the Black Mariner Who ‘Opened’ the Pacific
But in the article it is clear how the history of Lope Martín wasn't erased but merely required research or wasn't selected in miniature history text. The problem with history is the view that the person who creates it never has an agenda, or shouldn't have an agenda. History is always far larger than any written depiction of it. So you, meaning anyone, has to pick or choose what to say. Spain preferred choosing Andrés de Urdaneta , a friar in the catholic fold, a white man native to portugal, over Lope Martin, an African, yes, not afro portuguese, but african, from somewhere in africa, enslaved by the portuguese slave system in africa and taken to portugal and luckily or rarily gaining the opportunity from his enslavers to reach a status above slave. History didn't erase anyone. SOme people say history is written by the winners of war, but that isn't true. Everyone writes history: winners of war, losers of war, survivors of war, and yes, the dead from war. The question isn't a matter of who writes history. The question is, what history books do most people read. Most people don't read the history books of the losers, survivors, or murdererd. They read the winners books cause the winners books are more available, but availability does not equate to erasure. I repeat when black people in the usa are unaware of historical black colleges, or the deeds of black people in the government of the usa, or the deeds of black people throughout the entire militaristic history in the usa, that is not the fault of the winners of descendents of the winners, commonly called whites in the usa. That is the fault of the losers/survivors or descendents of the losers/survivors/murderered commonly called native american or black in the usa. Ask your parents did they tell you everything they knew about your people, about themselves? I bet they say no.
