     1. I’d love to know your favorite movie/performance of Gloria’s?  (And if you think “Sudden Fear” and “Human Desire” are equally underrated).

        2. Eddie, I think you are insightful in assigning strong origins of Film Noir to the Great Depression. But are you underestimating the effect of World War II on the increased market demand for Noir films?
    —John, Los Alamos, NM

He made a great point about song of south being a big winner so film noir wasn't the money getter.

        8. What was in the mickey that Casper Gutman gave to Sam Spade in “The Maltese Falcon”.
    —Paul

A mickey is fully called a mickey finn, named after michael finn, a criminal in chicago in late 1800s and he became a bartender. If someone came in and looked like a swell, a murphy, chloral hydrate , and that hurts memory. So don't take a drink from anyone you don't know and always watch them make the drink.

        9. In the 1942 "The Glass Key," William Bendix has to pause his thumping of Alan Ladd when Ladd loses consciousness. Bendix comments that he's "throwed another joe." Since when had “throwing a joe meant passing out”?
