This is an old story (originally broadcast on NPR back in 2010) of a book that went on to enjoy both critical and popular acclaim. The book was also turned into an academy award nominated film (I don't recall if it won anything). The publisher sent 6,000 galleys to help generate that word of mouth; can you image--6,000 copies! I know this is a story about word-of-mouth promotion of books, but it would also really be interesting to know how much was spent on advertising, who those ad buys were with, and how those ads performed. This was an article I published just a few years ago . It lists 50 websites for book lovers. It includes corporate websites and large indies sites well, not are Black owned, expect my site. While checking the links I discovered more than 1/3 were not longer active. Honestly, this does not come as a surprise, because I know Black book websites have been clobbered and white-owned websites are not completely immune to the challenges that plague Black sites, they just have a much larger audience and broader support. I was just asked "What's the Buzz on Sapphire's latest novel The Kid" I just seem to remember it falling flat. I read through the reviews on Amazon - something I never do as I don't know the reviewers and I know many are written to artificially slam (haters) or praise a book (author writing their own reviews). True to form the most of the reviews were 1 star or 5 star. Did anyone here read the book? What did you think? Here is another Brother, J. Marcellus Burke, I met during our annual Black Pack Party. He wrote what sounds like an interesting novel, The Black Knights. Which is fact based story about four fighter pilots serving in the German Air Force (Lufwaffe). His publisher, Bennett Johnson, who was also at the party (shown in the photo with me below) has an even more impressive resume. Bennett was Vice President of the Third World Press Foundation, President of the Evanston Branch of the NAACP and much much more. Recently I came across two really attractive book covers. Of course perceived attractiveness is purely subjective, but I think most folks will find images on these covers attractive. Of course we can argue about the relative merits of each cover regarding how well they relate to, or convey, the book's contents. In an online world we could also have to consider how well each cover looks when it is scaled down to thumbnail size. Black Issues Book Review was the only large circulation magazine devoted to books written by black authors. I talk about this magazine often. William Cox had sold it to the Brother that runs Target Market News, Ken Smikle. It is curious Ken does not mention this on his website's biography. At any rate by the time the magazine died, the surge in attention paid to Black books was already in run downswing. There are some indications that the pendulum is beginning to swing back as there seems to be renewed interest in Black books. 15 days down 351 to go :-)
